damn I should really stop having energy drinks* for breakfast

*they’re sugar-free I’m being responsible ok?

sassageflare,

@kkarhan well that’s inconvenient :QueerCat:

I’m drinking them lately cause I’d rather give money to the various energy drink people than use my landlord’s coffee machine which ewwwww, and my beloved moka pot is still in storage.

but thx for the tip Kevin :QueerCatHeart_Pride:

sassageflare,

@kkarhan oh I do have some tea with me actually, I might try that tomorrow :QueerCat: 💚

We’re debating on whether to stop over in Besançon on our way back from here. Cons: having to drive a bit more instead of getting a hotel in Mulhouse. Pros: you get to say Besançon. Do you realise how fun it is to say Besançon?

As a kid I was positively fascinated by, even obsessed with, car lights. Not the cars themselves, I had no idea about those, but like brake lights and turn signals and all that.
Pretty pretty pretty shiny lights.

being the kind of person who knows how to properly use an oscilloscope is definitely a stretch goal

I've been trying to make sense of my position on this for a while, and I don't know if I'm being too unreasonable about it. I don't think so, but maybe I'm just biased or perhaps sheltered in my thinking in some way.
I'm talking about when people are quick to jump in defence of others who come up with rather bigoted crap on some topic or other. The "sure, they might have said X, but at the end of the day they're a good person" type of deal. That urge that some people feel to kneejerkingly minimise the awfulness of their crappy family members, neighbours, coworkers, or assorted authority figures in their lives.
The thing is... I can't help but think that yes, however hard they might think that the person they are defending--and them by association--are not actually bad people; that does not matter one bit in the end. Sure, pretty much everyone thinks they are not bad. That's clear. But I cannot for the life of me think in good conscience that having bigoted views about something is in any way excusable. It might be understandable for some reason or other; maybe they are too young, or have been heavily propagandised to, or whatever might occur to you.
I've been called stubborn and inflexible over this before, but I just think that does make them pieces of shit any way you look at it. I'm just weary of giving people the benefit of the doubt anymore. By entertaining the possibility that someone might have really shitty positions on some issues while still being a decent human being, you're causing an incredible amount of harm to whoever stands in the focal point of their reactionary stream of bullshit-du-jour. I'm tired of excuses. I'm tired of being supposed to nod and smile and change the topic of conversation. I'm tired of having to be civil. Because I don't think that does any good.

I'm just going to keep calling out the asshatery despite ruffling whoever's feathers. Cause if someone can be so dismissive of those who are different to them, so oblivious or intentionally obtuse about their casual bigotry and drive-by virulent prejudice, why should I extend them any courtesy? I don't care if they don't realise they are being hurtful. Cause I'd venture that most of them actually do. They just don't give a damn.
I'd say that very few reactionaries are not aware at some level that they're being assholes. That's why they squirm at least a little bit when called out, or give you that Smug Smirk. How many times does one of them try to hide their true views? To pretend that they just 'have some concerns'. The Sartre thing about antisemites rings true here, I think.
In a day and age where educating yourself about not being an asshole is rather easy and a click away or tap away or even an honest-question-with-the-goal-of-empathising away, why should I offer them the compassion they are lacking and denying to me or those in similar positions?

And I don't think this should be framed exclusively as a contemporary thing either. We've known that we should ideally try to understand those who are different from us in any way for a loong time now. This is not a new concept. And too often they are quick to excuse crappy attitudes as 'a product of their times'. Yeah, I'm tired of that too. Recent decades were not some ancient nebulous time where people just didn't know any better. Too often is that used as an excuse. The status quo was more bigoted but they were only too happy to go along with that. To have an excuse. To not have to think about those icky people who don't look like I do or sound like I do or do what I do. We can just call them out more now. And they don't like that. Deep down, it itches them. They're trying to hold on to their nonchalant hate and slowly failing. Too many reactionaries have only 'changed their minds' about being assholes to certain groups of people because it's now unacceptable to do so in polite company. Not even remotely because they believe it's the right thing to do. When probed about it they would no doubt offer one of those standard reactionary dismissive 'I don't care about what they (and reactionaries really have to strain to not say "those freaks" here) do in the privacy of their homes' answers. They might now be okay with the bougie hollywood-depiction queers getting married, but they still hate trans people cause they are still an acceptable target. And most of them will express 'concerns' about trans kids or trans people in sports even if they don't actually give a single fuck about those topics. And infuriatingly enough, in ten years' time those same reactionaries will try to convince you they have always supported those marginalised groups thay they are attacking today.

I hope I'm getting my thoughts across in an somewhat understandable way. This is a long one but I've just poured out something I've been thinking over for a while now. So anyway maybe we should feed the bigots to a swarm of angry army ants? I dunno. Suggestions are welcome.

spicy take: I find holding an actual book to be annoying and vastly prefer my ereader. like, having to apply constant pressure to keep it open is a really unpleasant sensation I'm glad I don't have to put up with anymore. I just really dislike the ergonomics of books and also paper kinda of gives me a rash in my fingies?
when someone gives me a book as a gift I go and download the ebook version and read that instead. 😅

sassageflare,

@pwaring yess, I had that same issue and got one of those unofficial cases that has the cover that can fold into a little stand and that works wonderfully!
the already flattened and dog-eared ones are the best! a well-loved book with someone else’s little scribbles fills me with joy :QueerCat:
jeez, you just brought back memories of people loudly making snarky comments about the cover of the book I’m reading, so that’s deffo a plus 😋

sassageflare,

@kkarhan Ooh yea I had seen those but not an in-depth video before! It does look like an absolute powerhouse. And the way it’s put together is super interesting. Love the little box ramp! xD It does remind me of those kind of highly custom solutions of yesteryear. I wouldn’t know what to do with one of those of course. 😹
I feel like it’s absolutely the kind of thing we'll see people make videos about in like 20 years or so when they are retro and cheap the way we do about SGI systems now. :·P

sassageflare,

@kkarhan I like that Z600. HP workstations have a special modular vibe to them, I’m more used to their consumer offerings which are… Well you know. xD I like building a custom thing as much as the next person but there’s something about a workstation that has been designed by a particular vendor with their own idiosyncrasies and all. It can be done really well and give a solid feeling. As a kid I used to eye the x86 Sun Ultra workstations from the mid 2000s. And they still look sleek! Though the Nvidia one takes thing to the next level. That tubing alone just screams ‘industrial’ and ´performance´ to me.

Hahha, yeah most likely. You’re absolutely right. Hell I remember the G5s leaking even back then, let alone now. That green sludge! Dripping straight on top of the PSU! :·O Though I still have a soft spot for the G4s and G5s, there was an audiovisual lab full of them in a school I went to and I have fond memories. :D

sassageflare,

@kkarhan Mmm lovely stuff. I can always respect a Linuxy workstation even if it’s x86. 😜
And here we are talking about using top-notch performance computing tools while at my last job around December they gave me a 2009 Core 2 Duo Dell Optiplex to use. At some point I'd like to use proper equipment that doesn't lag horribly. I would’ve sold a kidney for a z600. 😂

sassageflare,

@kkarhan Haha wow. Insert the nintendo ‘Now You're Playing With Power’ ad video here. Dual socket and quad-SLI??
Cons: that’s probably a tad loud
Pros: you won’t need central heating anymore
