I totally have a health relationship with this platform. Totally. Being isolated at home for two and a half years with nothing to do (like actually nothing, no TV or books or video games) thanks to a brain injury really sets the stage for a healthy relationship with social media.

(It is not at all healthy, as my getting involved again with this fedi drama after I swore I wouldn't and my short lived attempt at interacting less proves)

So ive decided to delete tusky from my phone and make myself use the web interface if I want to interact here. Hopefully that helps???

@fla @kkarhan @Mer__edith @signalapp signal end to end encrypts the actual content of your messages, yes, but it doesn't encrypt the metadata of your messages — including who sends each message, who receives it, what date and time the message was sent on, whether it was received, and stuff like that, which can be used to do all kinds of analysis (in fact metadata is all that the surveillance agencies in the US even use when just passively surveilling people cuz you can actually figure out a fuck ton from just metadata). Not to mention the fact that it requires you to have a phone number for your account and that isn't encrypted either so each account is linked to your legal identity unless you have a burner phone. Signal has been promising they will set up usernames instead of phone numbers for accounts for something like 5 years now and maybe they'll release it soon but it's still a problem in the meantime.

Don't get me wrong, I use Signal to talk to my friends, but that doesn't mean that it isn't important to recognize the flaws that it does have

@jabberati @kkarhan @fla @Mer__edith @signalapp I like Session bc it explicitly focuses on not leaking metadata, including using a decentralized onion router network as its servers to hide who you're talking to. It doesn't use any centralized or proprietary server stuff. In fact I think it's more decentralized than even XMPP because you don't need to join or self host a server to use it, your phone is your server, and the onion router network is just used to anonymize stuff and route data packets from one server to another. In fact if you're on the same wifi connection as someone and text them, the phones will literally just talk directly!!

@ExecGoofy like the tech.lgbt people did a very in-depth review to try to figure out if there was any racism or lies going on and there just wasn't, objectively speaking. Because as it turns out, criticizing a black man is not the same as intentionally drumming up a racist harassment campaign towards him, no matter how often Ro repeats that to try to gaslight us, even if criticizing him can cause racists to take the opportunity to be racist and harass him in side channels, because guess what — racists will use any and every opportunity to harass black people.

Which is also why comparing tech.lgbt to kiwifarms is so awful: Ro's argument seems to be that tech.lgbt's criticism of him catalyzed an unrelated contingent of virulent racists to direct racist harassment at him in side channels, and the DDoS of him might have knocked him off the platform, therefore tech.lgbt is the same as kiwifarms. The problem is that while kiwifarms actively directs and encourages and intentionally drums up and keeps scoreboards for and aids and abets transphobic harassment, as an intentional thing that they as a community are doing themselves and are actively supporting and encouraging, tech.lgbt just criticized a black person with no knowledge that he was black at the time and unrelated racists, without their support or encouragement or desire or intention, even stochastically(!!!), used it as an excuse to harass him because guess what, racists will use any and every excuse possible to cover their harassment. So like, it isn't the same thing at all. Tech.lgbt definitely doesn't have a high score kill count for black people the way kiwifarms does for trans people, which also indicates another important and very significant with difference which is that the end goal of kiwifarms is to kill people and they use stalking and tracking and actually bring weapons and bombs in person at people to do it whereas the worst thing that the harassment directed at Ro might have achieved, according to him, is getting him to leave the platform.

There's a reason I'm so frustrated by the people who ddosed his servers and who are using this to direct racist harassment and other bullshit at him, it just further poisons the discourse and makes any kind of resolution more and more impossible. And it also honestly should be upsetting for anyone who cares the least bit about injustice to see him get that kind of stuff because nobody deserves racist harassment for any reason whatever. And despite all his issues I will always admire him for being willing to stick around in spite of the harassment issue the fedi has.

The problem is that this keeps going because, for whatever he might have been initially right about, he's just continued to double down and double down and double down on transphobia and race reductionism and lashing out at everyone who criticizes him because his massive ego won't let him do anything else. That's become the problem at this point, because he's the catalyst for mastodon.art and their whole contingent doing what they do, because their whole thing is just kind of unquestioningly backing him up, even according to people on his side of this conflict.

That's also why his claims that the idea that he has influence over the TBS block list is a lie are so nonsensical — he's literally friends with the head of one of the servers that TBS uses as a source (welsh pixie), and they unquestioningly block anything he puts on fediblock, meaning anything he wants blocked pretty much automatically has 50% of the votes it needs to be blocked. And guess what? At least one of the other servers used as a source for TBS is part of a moderator group with a private Discord and everything with mastodon.art where they coordinate moderation decisions!

I don't think the fundamental approach of TBS is one that I'd want widely adopted but like, I'm happy it exists as part of a panoply of different people trying to create different solutions and I genuinely hope that at some point there can be some kind of reconciliation here and maybe he can pick a better set of authoritative instances or something

A note: I firmly believe in giving people an "out" in public conversations and discourse. A way to save face and go "you know what, I done fraked that one up."

This means I often post things that are "softened." Because arguing with things tends to get people to double down.

I'm also southern and from the deep south to boot, so not doing it would take conscious effort :p

But. It should not be conflated with my feelings, which are often much stronger, though generally still fairly nuanced.

This is an interesting point. One of the recurring insights of one of my favorite scifi series is that if you don't give someone a means to surrender or back down or retreat then don't be surprised if they fight tooth and nail to the last breath, because you haven't given them another option. While those books talk about it in the context of military strategy, I think it holds true in conversations as well: if you want to actually be able to convince someone — which you definitely don't always want to bother trying to do, for instance in the case of fascists or bigots or narcissists — then you need to offer them a route by which they can admit you are right and be convinced (so, not tell them they're irredeemably evil or whatever), perhaps even while saving some amount of face.

@hrefna Red Rising. I highly, highly, wholeheartedly recommend it, it's seriously amazing. Just incredible writing. It deals with a lot of themes of revolution, leadership, social class, compromise, with a ton of Dune style realpolitik. The second trilogy (which is actually gonna be four books) especially, because it gets a lot more mature and complex with its examination of the characters and themes.

The only reservation I have about it is that it does use the fridging trope once as the inciting incident in the first boom, but it goes on to have multiple incredibly strong women with tons of agency and independence from the men so like, I think it more than makes up for it.

I think of antisemitism as prejudice specifically against Jewish human beings. when I see the term weaponized to shield a madman like Netanyahu from criticism, or to dehumanize Palestinians, or to protect ahistorical takes that justify ethnic cleansing perpetrated by the state of Israel, I have to call bullshit. it is not antisemitic to criticize Israel, empathize with Palestinians, or share history

For people whose progressivism/leftism/etc is founded in guilt and optics, they just pick whichever group they feel more guilty toward in a situation and defend all of them from all criticism at all costs, without an analysis of the actual context and justice of the situation and whether some of that group might have garnered genuine criticism, because it's about wanting to feel good and assuage their guilt, not actual justice. That's what's happening here on the part of a lot of white people I think. Guilt over the historical treatment of Jewish people transforms into just defending anything perceived Jewish (in this case, Israel) at all costs with no contextual awareness or concern for justice (like of the fact that many Jewish ppl don't support Israel's actions, or the humanity and oppression of the Palistinians). But that's just my 2c, feel free to tell me I'm wrong 😅
