Playing with IBM TopView in DOSBox. Multitasking in DOS, 1985 before OS/2.
Took me a while to figure out how to use the keyboard (missing serial mouse), but once you got it, it's pretty cool to switch between app windows and move them around!

text mode DOS screen running topview, several windows for Program Grop. DOS services with directory browser, window to add a program, orange context menu for actions.

flexion,

@mos_8502 Oh yes DESQView, have not seen that for a looong time!

flexion,

Nice, I can now multitask while working in Lotus 123 by switching to another DOS app.. for instance to view ASCII cat memes, or whatever people did at work in 1985 on their IBM PC :D

screen recording of IBM TopView loading Lotus 123 spreadsheet and switching back to another app

flexion,

@derSammler Yes I remember DOS Shell, but it was more a file manager with ability to launch another app to switch tasks, but not really multitasking as in TopView.

flexion,

@derSammler Oh, thanks, I didn't know there was a setting to enable preemtive multitasking in DOS Shell! Always thought it's just using TSR to switch between apps.

flexion,

@derSammler Thanks for the video 👍 Yes I already know it can switch between multiple apps and keep their state, but afaik TopView and DESQView use preemptive multitasking, while DOS Shell just pauses the task in the background and switches to another one

flexion,

@derSammler ..but would a music player really continue to play in the background (as you mentioned) when switching to another app via DOS Shell? (even if it's not able to play smoothly anymore) That would surprise me a lot!

flexion,

@derSammler LOL yes that thing is loud :D so if some apps really continue to run in BG I am impressed! Did not expect this in DOS Shell!

I've found new wheels for the Octane2 which weighs almost 30kg 😎 the old orange furniture casters weren't that practical.

    flexion,

...and the new 'plant pot roller' also causes less eye cancer 😜

    flexion,

@bensinc Yes! Found it by accident in the garden section of the local hardware store.

    flexion,

@karpour hahaha brilliant! 😆 The racing Octane! thx

I've installed IronOS on one of the TS-100 (bottom one). Pretty cool, comes with a different UI, additional functions like sleep mode and motion sensor 👍

menu display of two TS-100 soldering iron compared, one with stock firmware, one with IronOS and advanced configuration options menu

    flexion,

IronOS update.. It helps to have a RC-Heli with LiPo battery handy when you want to power up both TS-100 at once, to compare the firmware difference, but only have one PSU 😆

    flexion,

@polpo I hate swapping tips, so I went for two TS100 instead. Took a carrying case STL from thingiverse and "remixed" it into a dual case.

    flexion,

Hi, my name is T-1000.. err.. I mean TS-100.. half human, half soldering iron 🤖
This weekend I have to go fix some cold solder joints in a ceiling mounted LED lighting by stepping on a big ladder, so instead of a long extension cable for the TS-100 PSU, I'll strap this LiPo battery to my arm. The new IronOS firmware even allows me to set the voltage cut off for a 3S battery ❤️

    flexion,

@nyrath Velcro.. just pull and it's gone

    flexion,

@dec_hl Thanks ;) Yes, six in total.. 3 of them realistic portraits
