Sent off a tax-exemption application tonight for a new nonprofit. I ain’t gonna tell you what it is yet, but I will ask for your good vibes and wishes for a swift rubber-stamping anyway. The news will follow soon after!
I'm shopping around again for options to host masto.nyc outside my home. Right now, I'm considering:
Colocation Datacenters
Pros: We can host locally! And support NYC businesses. Much more affordable long term.
Cons: Still have to manage our own hardware.
Cloud
Pros: Easy to scale. Easy to maintain.
Cons: Difficult to find a local provider. Expensive.
In the meantime I'm looking for more concrete evidence of how much it would actually cost to migrate to cloud resources.
Right now? Looks like somewhere in the ballpark of ~10gigs of memory, and ~1.5 CPU units. I realize that sounds like a lot, but there's a fair amount of supporting infrastructure that is used too (HA apps, logging, replicated postgres, HA redis, etc).
Also, I'm a huge fan of Vultr (I use it for my portfolio site) but one of the challenges we face is trying to keep the provider in NYC. In do DigitalOcean is but.... they're pretty big and it wouldn't feel like supporting local >_<
For those of you that run your own instance, what are your rules and/or thoughts about cryptocurrency accounts or accounts that post a lot of cryptocurrency related stuff?
Do you allow it? Do you not allow it? What's your reasoning behind either?
@cliffwade yeah, it's a frequent avenue used for scamming or spam, so if crypto is mentioned we investigate to make sure the content is safe for users and isn't malicious
It's remarkable how easy it is to make an actually usable programming language if you don't care at all about making it optimized and if you don't have a tree of complex syntax rules
Mastodon v4.2.0 just dropped. The upgrade part is way more daunting than what I've seen in the past, so I'll see if I can perform it late night in the coming week or so. There's a lot of boxes to check to make sure it goes smoothly, but I'll let everyone know when it happens
So following on from that research into why people aren't signing up to the fedi, yesterday I tried a little experiment to remove some of the biggest barriers and help people make the jump.
People complain the process of signing up to mastodon is complicated, and it's hard to find the Good Posts.
So I shared with people who wanted to join two things:
An invite link to the server I'm on, to stop them having to choose.
My follow list in csv format, to populate the tl with good posts.
In the coffee shop this morning, overheard undergrad baristas trading strategies to most efficiently see both halves of #Barbenheimer.
On my way home, walked past a mixed-gender group of friends in same age cohort, all dressed in pink and looking amazing, rolling up to the AMC mantinee.
People love this, don’t they. Including but not limited to young people. The thought occurred to me: This feels like “Snakes on a Plane", except the #movies are actually good?!
Dredd was such a quality movie. Karl Urban killed that role and the evolution of Olivia Thirlby's character from insecure to 'fuck this, i'll do it myself' was magic.
@victor@fsnk yeah, I get it. I heavily depend on the CloudFlare stack already so it's a convenient addition, but regardless the fact that it's free is nice
