I'm not a movie industry expert, but "Killers of the Flower Moon" making back $120 million of its $200 million budget in the opening month seems fine. Especially since it'll live on Apple TV+ where most people will actually watch the 3 hour film.

I think the calculator for what qualifies for success in theaters is outdated. Post streaming, post COVID, we should be happy people see a movie at all in theaters, really. It's an increasingly niche, overpriced market -- a place where Apple thrives.

@HilliTech That's what I keep telling everyone! Literally NO. ONE. I know goes to the theatre...EXCEPT for "Events" like - and that was different. It was an event made by the theatre-watching crowd. An event of opposites.

I didn't even go for The Marvels. But you bet your butt I'll watch it on Disney+!

Our merged idealistic-pragmatic slide-deck-cum-stage-show on the importance of to the world was very well received at . We're now pitching it to other events as well. Where would you like to see “Defending FOSS” (aka. )? Here's one great review:

I've heard the Barbie movie can now be streamed, but Oppenheimer is still on deck. While waiting, if you're in the mood to supplement your knowledge of America's early atomic endeavor, "Now It Can Be Told–The Story of The Manhattan Project" might be just what you need. This vintage book is available here now.

lukewarm-take: was only a thing because people thought the movie wouldn't be satisfying on its own.

They were wrong, it's great!

Retired health science professor Barbara Oppenheimer has had an interesting and fun summer.

She watched both movies and got the t-shirt. When she introduces herself she goes by her old nickname Barbie Oppenheimer and people think she's pulling their leg. 😊

I know it's summer, but may I propose the Dollification of Ryan Gosling triple feature?

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

So far, I have only seen Barbie and not Oppenheimer, but both stories have interesting intellectual property aspects. Two of my colleagues have examined them.

"Barbie" hit theaters in Japan on Friday, where "Barbenheimer" memes linking the doll-themed film with a biopic of J. Robert Oppenheimer caused a stir and forced Warner Bros to apologize. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2023/08/12/barbie-opens-japan/?utm_content=bufferafe66&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn

Did the thing this weekend and I have to say I was surprised by how great Barbie was. I originally didn’t even plan to watch it in theaters (or possibly not see it at all). I have no interest in Barbie and figured it would be your typical comedy with too much riffing and lame jokes done to death but I loved it. Very happy to see it doing so well. And Oppenheimer too. A 3 hour Oppenheimer biopic doing that kind of boxoffice? Good times for cinemas!

Oppenheimer

Watched & really enjoyed the movie Oppenheimer.

It is a unique experience where I got to learn alot.

It has the quality of being 95% factually correct & is a good learning experience.

Nolan has done it again a unique movie experience.

It reminds me of a time people were less distracted & used to spend time to learn, reflect & achieve extra ordinary things.

So one part of BarbenHeimer is done ⚖️
