Live reaction of Michael Caine being sued by GW for unauthorized use of Praetorian costume.

Lucas had an uninituative meaning of “balance”. It wasn’t light and dark being equal, but dark side users being eliminated.

A better word would have been “tranquility”. If the force is naturally a calm lake, then dark side users are making waves I suppose is a clearer analogy.

A valid criticism. Coming from the mouth of something trying to replace it with something worse. A classic villain move.

I did enjoy the old EU Luke being a more reformist and grounded iteration of Jedi teachings. He started by rejecting Yoda’s warnings not to try and save his friends. He put friends over the high minded ideals of Jedi enlightenment right there in Empire Strikes Back. Then in ROTJ he spent the entire movie rejecting the obvious approach of simply killing Vader, instead trying to reach Anakin. Over and over Luke put people he cared about over esoteric codes.

(Remember when the original trilogy and much of the EU establishing Luke was written, the prequels and Clone Wars hadn’t been fleshed out, and Jedi were implied to be even more high minded and classical than they were shown in the prequels).

Nope, Lucas meant the dark side being wiped out.

Lucas’ intention was that Anakin brought balance, eventually, by killing Palpatine and then himself rejecting the dark side. Thus wiping out the Sith.

The idea of the prophecy and balance with Anakin as the chosen one hadn’t been thought of when ROTJ was made.

By the time Lucas had come up with the prophecy, the EU had established Luke in the post-ROTJ as unquestionably a Jedi. Luke rejected the dogmatic aspects of the old Jedi order as early as Empire Strikes back, and as more EU material was written he continued that trend, building a new Jedi order in the model of his ideas. However rejecting specific old organizational dogma can be seen as stripping away the excess bloat of a system and finding the “true” core of it. Think of Luke as a religious reformist in a way, rejecting the institutions of a religion while not rejecting the religion itself. He was Martin Luther with a lightsaber.

My mistake. I have seen quite often the thinking that wiping out mass numbers of Jedi brought the Sith-Jedi balance closer.

More like level 3 bandits appearing out of the woods and smugly threatening to mug me when I have armor made by a dwarven hellsmith and am holding the sword of Dragon Agony.

The bandit looks at me and thinks “Yeah. This guy is going to get it.” as he brings up his rusty shiv.

The Gregorian calendar didn’t go into effect until 1582. Because it’s a modification of the Julian calender. Which replaced the Roman calender.

Almost like there’s a continuity or something.

I strongly suspect the original post was attempting to use the word “chattel”, but couldn’t get it right.

Chattel, as in chattel slavery. Which means the idea being spun appears to be a driver’s license registers one on the books of the Department Of Transportation as a chattel slave, a good to be bought and sold.

Which begs the question who is trading with the DOT, but I’m sure the answer would be 36 pages of unpunctuated explanation.

How long does it normally take to build a pier for offloading commercial cargo?

setsneedtofeed,
@setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world avatar

What’s the reasonable cost for a pier like this?

setsneedtofeed,
@setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world avatar

It would still have a cost, just paid for from a different source. I was curious how much a pier of this kind is supposed to actually cost, but I misunderstood, and see you were making an entirely different point unrelated to that.

@setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world avatar

Is that normally how long piers of this type and size take for the military?

The bridge was usable after 4 weeks then?

setsneedtofeed, (edited )
@setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world avatar

It says built in 13 hours but usable for traffic in 4 weeks, and I am trying to parse that.

There was a temporary pontoon bridge then, and then a more permanent bridge for traffic built? I ask because pictures I initially saw were quite larger than the initial bridge, which made me question the within a day time.

I suppose it depends if the Gaza pier is closer to the first than the second. While the Gaza pier is described as temporary, it seems built to handle high and continuous cargo traffic. I imagine constructing such a platform which is also seaworthy enough to be towed requires more tasks than a single lane pontoon bridge. I also wonder how much of the Gaza pier had to be adapted and customized compared to pre-fabricated bridge segments.

Given the difference in type of work, and prefabricated material I wonder if 4 weeks is reasonable or not still. An example of similar maritime construction would be useful I suppose.

I’m aware of the implication. I’m trying to find out if it’s reasonable. Two military projects completed at different speeds is partially compelling, but then I find it less compelling looking at the differences.

I honestly don’t know if a month to build this project is reasonable or not. I’m poking at reactions to find out.

I’ve heard Homeworld Emergence (formerly Homeworld Cataclysm) is quite good. It started as an expansion pack for the first game but kept expanding until it was a standalone game.

This project made me look up 54mm Inquisitor models on eBay but the prices made me sad.
