Yes, because they are committed to the idea that it’s “their land” and shouldn’t have to compromise with “invaders.” 3 generations of Palis have grown up being fed that rhetoric, making it all the more intractable.

I’m not convinced of that. In much the same way that Israel accepted the UN mandate as permission to declare a nation, the Palis could hold a referrendum on a 2SS that could be enforced by global peacekeepers for a minimum of 15 years. Convince israel of peaceful intent, and even their hardliners would have trouble selling endless war.

@galad Then they will simply surrender the rest of their lives to war. Arabs will go on thinking land lost to war is still theirs, and many jews will still believe it was their land in the first place. There is no right or wrong solution. Just a solution. Both sides will take a hit. It’s called compromise.

Israel is a powerful nuclear-armed nation. They are never going to abandon Israel, and will never accept any political solution as long as they are routinely attacked. And no one can force them to do otherwise. Qatar knows this, yet they continue to fund Hamas. They work both sides against the middle and the middle always loses. Someone must start preaching meaningful compromise or this could go on for decades if not centuries.

And don’t think for a moment that only Israel’s hard right supports this war. A majority of Israeli’s hate Bibi, but support his war. That’s what happens when two generations have lived under random rocket barrages and other forms of terror. It’s an ugly situation, but so long as one side is devoted to the destruction of the other, nothing will change. Someone has to change the game by changing course.

I lived through a lot of war in the Middle East and heard most arguments. Nothing will ever change so long as a terrorist organization is driving the bus for Gazans. You cannot convince a powerful enemy you’re interested in peace when continually supporting people whose only skill is war.

@Colby That’s a convenient term used by Pali advocates, but not very helpful. And even if taken at face value, most of the modern world was determined by “colonizers.” It doesn’t move us any closer to resolution.

@Colby I never said it was “fine.” None of this is fine. But you can either wait for some fantasy resolution not likely to ever happen, or put away the labels and all the baggage of the past on both sides and find a way forward.

What I really dislike about social media is how one influencer can make enormous impact on a conversation or sub-narrative within it, but counterpoint is almost never as discoverable. This Walt Mossberg thread is a case in point. His arguments will get massive traction, but rebuttals will be very hard to find. I have always had a fix for this problem. @Green_Footballs and I have been working toward it for years. We’re closer every day.

@ottomate @Green_Footballs That’s partly my point. They do what they do, and the led will follow them too easily. But there could be new and offsetting technologies or behaviors that mitigate what they do and how easily others are led.

@mmasnick Since you have some personal experience with him, can you theorize just why he might expose whatever brand he still has to the kind of negative attention any kind of alliance or kinship with Elon would bring? There has to be some motivation for taking on that kind of taint on purpose.
