I’m old enough to remember when aspiring journalists wanted to work for the @nytimes.

This afternoon, I had a lovely conversation with a saleswoman in the midwest about the Shore A durometer range of certain thermoplastic elastomers (TPE). As you might imagine, it got quite erotic.

Patience. They’re still sorting through their complicity in electing Trump in 2016.

Is "fast fashion" just way the mass market apparel industry works now? Any chance it will fade away?

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@mikey No kidding. Fast Fashion is way beyond that. It’s more like fashion-crack than apparel. And the dealers are even worse than the Sandler family was when pushing oxy.

More nanny-state nitwittery. 90% of all quoted posts I see on any platform are just further commentary on a story. Yeah sometimes there's an idiot at the heart of the story. But it's hardly the norm. At least not in my world. I'm sorry about yours. If you don't want to be quoted. Don't post things in public. Simple as that.

@serapath That seems rather extreme. Ali Partovi isn't exactly your classic scumbag billionaire. (AFAIK, he's not a billionaire at all.) But he certainly has access to their money due to some of his very smart ideas about nurturing talent Even so, $8 million in a seed round isn't a lot these days.

@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@nus I don't see they need to "replace" him. He was never doing much (if anything). He was just on the board because he used Twitter's money to get them started. As I understand it, they've wanted him out for a long time.

@tchambers @evan Have the Threads people suggested a timeline for when they plan to close the circle and let Threads users follow our open social accounts? Do you believe they’ll actually go through with it? I have my doubts.

Good morning. I had a dream that Trump dropped out of the race, and J.D. Vance became the GOP nominee. I woke up sweating. We traded a completely incompetent scumbag for a marginally competent scumbag. It felt so real. It is something we’d do. You know I’m right. Be afraid.

What to make of it? Jack Dorsey left BlueSky’s board, closed his user account, and is back on Twitter, praising it as “freedom technology” under Elon’s misrule.

You know why nobody talks about “garage inventors” anymore? Besides the fact that nobody can afford a garage anymore, it’s also due to changes in patent law that congress approved that largely cripples small inventors with a “first to file” rule that makes it way too easy for big companies to basically make off with any good idea by patenting a defensible variant using their biggest advantage: lots of money to spend on lawyers.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@hankg Meh, I wasn't even thinking of Apple. Whether the cotton gin, the telephone, the electric motor, dishwasher, washing machine, or the Whopper, the history of seminal product invention was not large companies innovating, but individuals with a vision and a dedication building it.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@hankg And if you think that's a myth, pick up any book on the great inventions that shaped modern life. And when big companies do invent things, it's often a personal struggle to get them to do it. Consider Martin Cooper doing his dog and pony shows to convince Motorola to make a cell phone.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@TheJen I throw away an idea a day because I've been through the wringer a few times. I've sued Microsoft for patent infringement and lost on appeal because they convinced 2 of 3 judges that a "cache" was the most essential component of the entire concept. The last judge admitted they were clueless about all of it.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@TheJen I've had lamp designs copied and put on the market within 8 weeks of premiering them at trade shows. Before we could even ship a single one.

@lakelady I can’t speak for @galad, but in my view, the evidence is in the fact that 100% of their very public ire and rhetoric is aimed at the US and Israel, rather than the biggest obstacle to ending the violence: Hamas. I have not yet seen a single exception. It may exist, but I haven’t seen it.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@lakelady @galad There is no cohesive message. All of the demands are impossible for the US to force Israel to comply with. They like but don't need our weapons badly enough to alter their path. Israeli's I've spoken with are reluctantly resigned to even a failed effort to crush Hamas.
