Just had the design meeting with someone that literally went in the "so I've been playing Tears of the Kingdom" direction, and my heart hiccup'ed for a sec

(I am pleased to report Xalavier was not asking for arbitrary bridge building or glue-together physics tho, thank god, actually this is reasonable)

I often get the feeling that I used to be faster / better at things. 😞

But maybe it’s just that I was inexperienced enough not to be able to judge “better”, and young enough to put 3x the hours in without thinking about the consequences 🤔

The top of the espresso machine stays warm for ages after it’s turned off, and the cup warmer area is enclosed with little rails, I suppose I should be surprised that none of our other cats has figured this out before, but still, sigh 😹

    Thinking that a single programming language is the best one and that everything should be written in it is a fairly major red flag TBH

    Actually balanced people recognise that tools are made for the problems the authors consider most important at a particular time. There’s no such thing as a universally good tool.

    @psychicparrot42 I keep trying to see what everyone loves so much about that game, and failing. Every time I try I get a hint of it, but then the game ruins it by being overly pretentious or insta-failing on something unexpected when the last autosave was 2h ago. I don’t think it’s as clever as it thinks it is

    Noticed a cheeky blackbird closely eyeing up my blueberry bush ! I’ve been putting off covering it with netting until all the flowers were done (basically today) so we nipped out to cover it before all the berries get nicked (from experience, birds are quite happy to eat unripe blueberries)

    @eniko They're desperate not to acknowledge the fact that getting rich is mostly a function of luck+privilege (plus some effort, but no more than anyone else really) and that they're no better qualified than any other person on the street, in fact often the reverse because they've become so cossetted in their bizarre little worlds

    I had to search what an extraction shooter was since everyone is talking about that new Bungie game. I don't think I ever played one. Battle Royale was easier for me to get before even trying one, this one I'm having a hard time understanding, guess I gotta try one.

    @djlink basically a game where you spend ages trying to PvE something and even if you do it all your rewards can be stolen by another player before you get out. Sounds annoying as hell

    I bet if you asked admins of most good Mastodon instances whether they actually want to run a big social media site they’d probably say “hell no”, which is absolutely the kind of person you want in charge of things.     The problem with tech is that there’s too much expectation that it should be sexy. All the bits we rely on - hardware, OS’s, core libs - are at their best when they’re as boring as the beige boxes PCs used to come in.

    This stuff should be dull, it should just work exactly as you’d think and no user should give even a second’s thought to it. It shouldn’t be exciting, and it definitely shouldn’t warrant a CEO getting on a big stage fishing for breathless gasps.

    Make Tech Boring Again
