Making steady progress with the new Mastodon app. Any ideas for what the app icon should be? (Currently using a placeholder)

siracusa,
@siracusa@mastodon.social avatar

@JPEGuin No icon ideas…but how do you feel about adding an option for a Twitterrific-style unified timeline? (i.e., a “home” timeline that shows the usual stuff, plus ALL replies and mentions, even from people you don’t follow, allowing the user to read everything by scrolling through a single timeline)

Hey @viticci - listening to @upgrade - you were asking why throwing up was the default response to a mismatch in human i/o sensors.

Not sure if this is the reason, but back in the 80s, when I was in grad school at MIT Media Lab doing VR stuff, we referenced the "bad berry" syndrome.

The idea was that humans evolved to, when perceptual systems mismatched, assume a “bad berry" had been consumed - so throw it up to reset the system.

Made sense to me then - still does now.

@Drwave @viticci @upgrade @ismh86 I’ve read this as well: if you just consumed something that, say, makes you feel like you’re spinning when you’re not actually spinning, it might be very bad for your health (perhaps even deadly). Puking may give your genes a slightly higher chance of appearing in future generations than people that don’t puke under the same circumstances. Repeat for many thousands of years and you get modern humans and motion sickness.

What are some numbers in your field that anyone else in the field would identify without even thinking about it, but folk outside may have no idea. Just the numbers, no explanations. Yet.

105 148 210 297 420 594 841 1189

@NanoRaptor Maybe too easy, but: 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 14.4, 19.2, 28.8, 33.6, 56k.

@siracusa considering this recent ATP episode, I’m curious to hear your thoughts about having external monitor support for the iPhone. Is there any technical reason why iOS wouldn’t be able to use Stage Manager with an external display, keyboard and mouse? Samsungs Dex is interesting and I’m curious if Apple could see a future where some use iPhone as a MacBook replacement. I’ve used my iPad this way and it’s “usable” for simple computing.

siracusa,
@siracusa@mastodon.social avatar

@ryanoff I’m not sure if the display drivers on the Axx SoCs could support that today.

THREE styles of New York pizza? Including a “grandmother style” from Long Island? I would love if @atpfm and especially @siracusa could sort out what a New York style pizza really is. Heh or maybe that’s one for @robot …? 😊

@arcticleo There’s even more than that, but the “classic” and Sicilian are the main two from my youth.

@siracusa thoughts on the ATP discussion about current issues with giving the iPad more power user features. I agreed with most, but not sure why (in my opinion) the most glaring issue is never mentioned.

The fact that a finger is the primary input device for the iPad and iPadOS. That alone makes using the iPad for “power user” tasks a huge pain. The imprecision of a finger, large onscreen keyboard, and relatively small screen, make the experience frustrating for even moderately complex tasks.

siracusa,
@siracusa@mastodon.social avatar

@RollingGoron Power users probably have a pencil and/or keyboard with trackpad.

siracusa,
@siracusa@mastodon.social avatar

@RollingGoron Keeping a Final Cut Pro render running in the background doesn’t require a change to input devices. Ditto for allowing multiple simultaneous audio streams, etc. Look at the things people are requesting. None require subverting or abandoning the touch interface.

Why do some podcasts on have auto-generated transcriptions and chapters (ATP), while others do not (History Extra)?

Is this something you had to opt in to @marcoarment @caseyliss @siracusa ?

siracusa,
@siracusa@mastodon.social avatar

@callionica We did not opt into it. Also, we put our own chapters in the actual MP3 file, which Spotify is apparently ignoring.

@siracusa I think you’ll find it interesting that the M4 sits directly behind the copper Apple Logo, therefore acting as a heat sink.

They probably didn’t throw some thermal compound on there because that would just transfer a lot of heat to the logo and be really hot to touch.

@siracusa Is there an episode of ATP where you talk about your photography workflow when importing / editing photos from your vacations?

I recently bought my first big boy camera and am struggling a bit with where to keep the files (jpeg + raw). Do you keep everything in Apple Photos? Just jpegs? How to you manage moving files between Lightroom and Photos?

@timbueno I don’t know. I keep both the RAW and the JPEG as separate images.

@david The beauty of Dropbox is that I can quit the app, do a bunch of development, and then relaunched it later. Much better control, and deterministic behavior with reasonable execution time.

@jsnell I just got my iPad Pro 11 M4 – purchased almost exclusively for the new OLED display 😉

But I have to say I’m a bit underwhelmed (the blacks are still not as black as the bezel), and almost shocked to see what looks like the dreaded soap opera effect when watching movies?!

It’s nice to see a greater dynamic range, but everything is maybe popping too much – colors, light, etc?

I almost prefer the more muted, movie-like look of the iPad Pro 2022 LCD, which seems blasfemous.

Am I crazy?

siracusa,
@siracusa@mastodon.social avatar

@4nd3rs I’ve been watching TV shows, and the blacks are completely black.
