@atpfm heard you guys justify the iPad Pro price by comparing it to a MacBook Air. iPad Pro 13 inch with a keyboard is $1650. MacBook Air with same RAM and storage is $1100, and it gives you 2 USB C data ports and a headphone jack. Putting aside software, even just the hardware pricing makes no sense.

Based on my replies, the National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe (1980) was clearly an Important Book for nerds of my generation!

I love this because it shows the power of funding high-quality artwork for what is essentially a book of Really Cool Stuff and Ideas for Kids.

Forget the business model. This book and these illustrations set kids’ minds on FIRE, to the point where they still remember it vividly today, 44 years later.

@hoemma The clear thing in this photo is a coffee table. (They’re usually wider than they are deep, and usually not clear, but they come in many shapes and sizes.)

This one even has books on it! Presumably permanent, but I’m sure many people only put them out after cleaning up before company comes over.

@siracusa Hello John. Just a friendly FYI. I heard you mention in the last ATP that iPads aren’t great for Pro apps because they cannot stay running in the background. Not true for Apple’s Pro apps, they have a specific setting to always keep them running.

@mingistech I think the complaint I’ve heard is that the app gets killed in the background when a foreground process needs memory or other resources, but I’ll double check that.

@siracusa You didn’t waffle about a possible 13” iPad for your TV watching? It got considerably lighter and the screen is so much less crammed for video. I’ve been going back and forth for days now. The only thing stopping me is finer table reading of news on the web and the hunungus price increase. @atpfm

@atpfm ML scientist here: The Neural Engine has always been fp16 only. When you can use it, it delivers incredible performance at very low power needs. However, there‘s no public API to program it. You are restricted to using CoreML, which cannot be used to develop and train models directly (You need PyTorch etc). However, model conversion fails more often than not, because CoreML lacks support for many layer ops. I have high hopes for MLX.

@MaxLaves So what do you think about the M4 neural engine’s supposed 38 trillion operations per second compared to 18 trillion in the M3? Does that seem plausible without some shenanigans in how those numbers are determined?

@atpfm hey I think the non-bootleg member release episode this week is somehow mixed up with the bootleg version? The audio levels are weird and there’s overlaps and things that probably meant to be cut.
