I don't mind paying a little extra tax for the extras that we get up here in Scotland. Where's the opposite petition?

We've got a new keyboard coming this summer!

You can get a sneak peek at what we're working on at https://shop.keyboard.io/preonic

@jesse Bluetooth is interesting though I'm now so used to the split layout on the 100 and Atreus that I'm not sure I could go back to a straight keyboard. Also not sure I'd be allowed any more keyboards in the house.

I've been impressed with how the Atreus has held up with the 4 year olds tantrums when video time comes to an end same it's eg time for bed.

election tomorrow. I'll be voting for Sadiq Khan. I'd like to say I've formed a nuanced view of London politics and his record as mayor, but the truth is I'm just looking at the rediculous unti-ULEZ brouhaha and making sure I vote the opposite way to that lot.

smsm1,
@smsm1@mastodon.green avatar

@derickr @harry_wood the switch away from the bit of proportional representation is such a backwards step.

smsm1,
@smsm1@mastodon.green avatar

@derickr @harry_wood AV or STV for a single seat still makes sense as it makes people feel their bit is valued when wanting to support minority parties. Granted unlikely to change the result from the first one, however makes the voting experience better and potentially higher turnout. Potentially gets better policies as candidates try to get higher up the list of ranking for supplemental votes.

Recycling batteries isn't actually that easy, though. So many people will continue to be lazy and just bin them.

The onus is currently on people to take the batteries somewhere to recycle. Which means they need to store them until they do.

So, instead of bin lorry fires, we'll have house fires instead. Realistically, councils should start collecting them with kerb-side recycling.

I've been contributing to open source projects for 20+ years, and a key goal of those contributions has always been to save other developers time and help them be more productive

I worry that LLMs are going to reduce job opportunities by making people who learn to effectively use them much more productive

I never worried about that for a second with my open source work. These two issues feel very different to me, but I'm having trouble articulating exactly why

smsm1,
@smsm1@mastodon.green avatar

@simon @davew I'm not convinced by no code systems. They might lower the barrier to entry however most people still don't have the mindset or inclination to use them. They often have limits that run out quickly depending on the complexity that you are trying to do. Often hosted too which means a paid for service that could disappear unlike code you write and compile yourself.

We are making some progress on the SIM stuff. All OK as proof of concept, but integrating with our systems step by step to be a service for trialists this month. Getting close.

The same SIP2SIM logic for calls and texts, but for (expected) £10+VAT/month. But no "airtime" cost either way for voice or text.

Data packages to work on but seem sensible,. hope to have news on that soon. Just normal NAT mobile data.

I have been working on SMS all day, nearly ready.

@RPBook @worriernun @organicmaps @streetcomplete same here. Street complete has got me back into mapping as it's easy to add little details here and there whilst it and about.

📖 “Eurostar Security Theater and French Station Size” https://pedestrianobservations.com/2024/01/18/eurostar-security-theater-and-french-station-size/ /by @Alon

I’d also argue it’s inexcusable Eurostar has held a monopoly on this route for so long. There’s zero motivation to innovate or do anything other than drive up existing fares.

smsm1,
@smsm1@mastodon.green avatar

@heliomass @Alon the competition is ferries and airlines. Ferries are a longer journey, but very quick through security when I've used them. Often little to no queue.

“Finally, Toronto has unified transit fares: The good and the bad.” https://reecemartin.ca/2024/02/06/finally-toronto-has-unified-transit-fares-the-good-and-the-bad/

Good breakdown of the new system in Toronto. I’d still argue Montreal’s new zonal system is more logical and easier to understand, but then Torontonians can tap in with their credit card or phone which I’m insanely jealous of. OPUS just can’t be killed off fast enough in my opinion.

smsm1,
@smsm1@mastodon.green avatar

@dt @heliomass one of the reasons I like payment cards (especially tap tap cap style) as an option is when traveling to other places the ticketing is much simpler and you can just board the vehicle without needing to figure the local ticketing system and plorentha of tickets. Having to download an app for each city you travel to to pay for the bus ain't fun.

smsm1,
@smsm1@mastodon.green avatar

@dt @heliomass London, Lothian buses in Edinburgh and surrounding areas, First in Glasgow already have tap tap cap style payments using bank cards with daily and weekly capping. If you are a very regular and frequent traveller in the local area then there are other cheaper tickets available by paying for a month or year ahead, or by monthly direct debit.

The Dutch have national distance based fares with some discounts if you pay a monthly fee. There's a fee for boarding & a distance based cost.

smsm1,
@smsm1@mastodon.green avatar

@dt @heliomass there are advantages for operators, such as faster boarding times, making journeys quicker as no need to discuss with driver which ticket to purchase, which in turn creates more passengers, so worth the investment to having auto calculating the cheapest fare for their passengers. Happier passengers and less support required for fares is worth it.

smsm1,
@smsm1@mastodon.green avatar

@dt @heliomass in London the buses are completely cashless. You have to use either oyster or contactless.

Agree allowing cash in some form is needed as many don't use plastic. Where I live the dwell times due to people paying or telling the driver their destination can be significant.

smsm1,
@smsm1@mastodon.green avatar

@dt @heliomass I suppose once you get to buses every 5-10 minutes or more frequent, the boarding and dwell times become more critical. Edinburgh and London have this though they already have bus lanes in many places which helps.

Granted lower frequency routes the boarding times is less critical for the bus to keep to time, and other factors are often a bigger issue.

Ughhhh.

I used to do the London to Edinburgh route a lot when I was at uni, and often it was cheaper to fly. These kinds of cynical greedy changes to the fare structure will likely do little to improve things.

smsm1,
@smsm1@mastodon.green avatar

@heliomass fares are simply too high. Need cheaper fares as a cap. Also need more capacity to bring down fares. Oh wait HS2 has been cut. I like the idea of a semi flex date however it is too expensive when traveling as a group/family.
