@RPBook bought themself a Palm Pilot. We're both remembering how good the Graffiti input was. I've even installed a Graffiti keyboard on my phone. This Toot was typed with it. I think I may even prefer it to the tapping tiny letters type of keyboard. I do think maybe I need to get a stylus.

RPBook,

@JetlagJen it's very good. The basics are intuitive, and it's quick and easy to view a cheat sheet.

After some issues, I installed an reader on the Palm m105 I bought recently. This evening, I used it to read Past Imperfect by @clacksee while waiting for eldest to finish at Scouts.

Or, as my youngest put it, "Oh, it's from the olden days" 😳

in 1917, the Austro-Hungarian navy attacked the Otranto Barrage. Three cruisers, two destroyers, and three submarines took part in the largest attack on the anti-submarine barrier. Of the forty-seven drifters on the barrage, fourteen were sunk and another four damaged.

Some drifters fought back, including the Gowan Lee, whose captain won the Victoria Cross.

Went to see Kiri Pritchard-McLean's stand-up show Peacock with the eldest last night.

It was very good, thoroughly recommended. Her support act was great, too.

In a fit of nostalgia, I bought an old #Palm m105 from #Ebay. I blame @neil — his stories of buying old hardware obviously inspired me.

Now to see what I can do with it, and if I can get it to sync with my #UbuntuMate 24.04 laptop.

What can I use to make a simple #map from a list of coordinates?

I have a #Minecraft world that I've been working on for a while. I've built a network of secured routes between nether portals and I'd like to make a sort of tube map of them. I've done it on paper previously, but I don't want to redraw the whole thing every time it outgrows the page.

It doesn't need to be fancy or pretty. I just want to stick the place names and coordinates in and get a plot / chart / map out for reference.

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@JetlagJen could you put the coordinates in a spreadsheet and create a graph from them?

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@JetlagJen ah, OK.

What are people using for an reader these days? I haven't used anything since Google Reader and would like to get back to reading feeds.

Everything I've looked at either has a cost or features I don't want. Is there a decent app for ?

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@alansuspect I use Miniflux.
https://miniflux.app/

I pay $15/year for the hosted version, but you can self host.

There are Android clients - I use Miniflutt.

What’s the cardinal role of being an author? What’s the first thing you learn?

Even if you’re not an author yourself, you’ve probably seen enough instances of to know this one.

Peoples Choice Awards Dont GIF by NBC Okay, don’t do that!

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@clacksee we all know it, but I've still seen authors try to justify doing it 🙄

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@clacksee I've read multiple times that reading fiction increases empathy, and I like to assume that authors read.

Then people like this come along.

@clacksee makes much more sense to vent here or to a friend or loved one. 👍

#OnThisDay in 1942, British troops landed on the island of #Madagascar. The British assumed the French would pit up little resistance, but the subsequent campaign lasted almost exactly six months.

It was the first major Allied amphibious invasion of the #SecondWorldWar, with the first use of tank landing ships (LSTs), and the first use of tanks in an amphibious operation.

The Polish Embassy in London has released a series of interviews with Marian Rejewski, the first person to crack the code.

He explains the process, including how they did it before they invented the bomba, and how the bomba worked. Fascinating stuff.

I will be voting today. Here we have Police Commissioner elections and I really resent voting for them because politicising the police force is a stupid idea and I have yet to see an adequate case made for the role.

But I will vote.

@Waxingtonknee spoiling your paper is always an option. It can't be dismissed as apathetic, but means you don't vote for something you fundamentally disagree with.

@Susan_Larson_TN this article reminds me of the men who become feminists when they have a daughter.

I'm glad she's supporting her kid. I just wish it didn't take having a trans kid to make people accept trans people.
