Say I want to link to community x on instance y.org. How do I post this so that someone from instance z.org will end up at z.com/c/x@y.org, but someone from a.org ends up on a.com/c/x@y.org?
Pretty self explanatory but if you are going to continue to use reddit on mobile, switch to one of these options. You will need to have to create your own api key but that is easy to do....
Lets hope sync can make Lemmy actually easy to use. You'd imagine that stuff like linking another community should be one of the core features of something like this, but sadly it's not currently working.
I kinda understand it has to do with frequencies and the speed they can send information but I don't know enough to have a productive conversation with those that think it's mind altering cancer rays. Thats also what i keep running into online when I'm trying to find a dummy version for how it all works. I know I'll probably...
There are two 5Gs. There is Sub-6GHz-5G and Milimetrewave 5G.
Sub-6GHz-5G operates in roughly the same frequency ranges as 4G. Radiation-wise it is pretty much exactly the same as 4G. The cell size is similar, the frequences are similar, range and object penetration are similar. What is different is that 4G was built upon 3G which was built upon 2G, which means, that 4G has very complicated and inefficient signaling and overhead compared to 5G, where they decided to declutter the protocol and make the management much easier. The main benefits of Sub-6GHz-5G are for the network operator, since it makes management so much easier. The only really meaningful advantage for the users is, that 5G allows to allocate a higher bandwidth to a single user in case no other users in the cell need it right now. This is only very rarely the case, so in most cells this won't happen often.
mmWave-5G is a different beast. It operates on frequequencies between 24-100Ghz, which is more than the max 6GHz that the otherr kind of 5G runs on. These higher frequencies are quite different. First, hardly anything else uses it, so the frequency bands are mostly empty, so you can reach incredible speeds on these bands. The problem is, there is a reason why hardly anything uses it. The range is super low (about the same range as a good wifi access point) and the object penetration is abysmal. A sheet of paper can block the 5G signal. Or a tree. Or your hand. Or your head.
So if you hold your phone the wrong way, or turn the wrong way, or have hair that covers your phone, you might not get reception at all.
So the use cases for mmWave-5G in the real world are incredibly limited, and they are usually used in a few hotspots in a larger city, just so the network providers can advertise their services as "Up to (huge number) GBit/second".
So now for the radiation argument: Both kinds of 5G are solidly inside the non-ionizing-radiation-territory, so the only thing you can do is heat something up. And heat is something you feel, so if it doesn't burn you it doesn't harm you. Other than e.g. UV radiation, which is ionizing and causes skin cancer, and yet people willingly expose themselves to UV in intensities that are 10 000x or more than what they expose themselves to 5G. They even expose themselves on purpose to UV to the point that radiation sickness (=sunburn) sets in, but the same people are afraid of 5G. Go figure.
But to really disspell the fear of 5G: Sub-6-5G is radiation-wise identical to 3G, 4G and WiFi. mmWave-5G is so weak in object penetration that it gets blocked by a piece of paper or the outer layer of the skin. And the radiation exposure is incredibly tiny.
Remember just 15 years ago when everyone here was like "Global warming won't affect us here. It's all so green, we have the mountains, we have snow, it's not gonna touch us"?
Jerboa shows promise, but it feels like it's not quite there yet. There are still some important features missing (e.g. selecting the language for a post) and frequent bugs....
Yeah, totally! I am not trashing Jerboa here. It's free software that I didn't pay for, so I don't have any entitlement regarding it or anything. My point was just mainly "until Jerboa is good enough, this solution might help".
It's actually pretty amazing what these two guys have pulled off almost completely by themselves.
Also, eigentlich die Abfahrt davon.
It’s the first time that citizens have approved a net-zero law in a direct vote. In all, 59.1% of voters approved the government’s new climate and innovation law. The government and all major parties, except for the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, had called to vote in favour of the bill.
Almost all European (and many other) countries have set similar goals for 2000, 2020, 2035 and noch 2050, and we are all just breezing by them. On the contrary, the CO2 output has increased since 1990.
Setting goals doesn't matter if there is no plan and no punishment for not keeping it.
The current plan of basically all countries is "let's wait another 20 years and see if some magic technological solution to our problems appear". That's not planning, that's superstition.
The problem here is that many countries are just outsourcing their CO² output. If you move the factory to Asia, the CO² output doesn't show up in your country, but instead in Asia.
Another issue with the charts by the BBC is that they don't show per-capita data but instead the total amount, and the "needed for 1.5°" curve is also not adjusted per-capita but instead adjusted based on what the country is doing so far. So for example, it allows for the USA to have per-capita yearly CO² emissions of ~10t by 2030, while Kenya only gets 0.95t per capita.
Actually, they say Kenya is wildly not on track to reach the 1.5° goal, while even the incredible increase that they are projecting based on the policies curve would only put them up to 2.4t CO² per capita, compared to the 10t CO² per capita that they put as the "USA would be awesome if they managed to reduce to that level".
"Nah, we will just increase the CO² output by a little bit this decade, but we will reduce our CO² output by 90% each year starting in 2048, so we are totally fine for 2050."
What I am wondering about with that situation is, who are those settlers who voluntarily move there?
Why would anyone in their right mind pick up their family and move them right into occupied territory, where they have a good chance of being attacked by someone defending their territory?
I've been there a lot, so I know the situation. There are quite a few things that are odd and inconvenient over there. But worst of all is the Autobahn. Not having a speed limit makes it a terrible place to drive. And generally their addiction to cars and their aversion to working, affordable public transport.
While replacement batteries are easily found on Amazon and AliExpress, capacity tests by community members such as Makho figured out their true capacities are so low that sometimes they last less than an old, deteriorated, original battery. With the increased usage of battery draining cartridges such as flashcards, the situation...
Yeah, I repaired a few batteries of different devices that way. Cut it open, keep the electronics and connector, replace the cell.
The issue with replacement batteries for old devices is, that they are often equally as old as the device. They've just sat on a shelf for that duration instead of being in a device.
What's the correct way to link to a community on a different instance?
