I have a school project due tomorrow involving controlling a heater to heat a room based on electricity prices/inside temp

I was originally going to use a switching mechanism to actuate the switch using a stepper motor but...that did not work. And there is no time left to get it working.

So I need to improvise to get it working...and I know exactly how to do it, it's just going outside the rules a bit. Instead of flipping a switch on the heater, I want to use a relay to directly control the input current. However, I've never worked with mains voltage (I know how it works, but still) and we were told not to do anything with it when the project started.

Do you think it's worth going out and buying a relay, then making an ESP-controlled power socket?

@mightyspaceman I've seen people using a remote-controlled power socket to do that. The control circuit can be wired to the remote. Viola! Mains switching without dealing with mains power.

@mightyspaceman Needed an app?!? O.o

I was thinking of something simpler; like this: https://www.jaycar.com.au/remote-controlled-mains-outlet-controller/p/MS6148

@mightyspaceman Well, no. The idea is to use the remote; it would be modified for your project to "press" the relevant button, usually with something to wire up the contacts.

There used to be versions where the remote had only one or two buttons, but no more, it seems.

Waiting for my RedBubble store to be approved and go live. The wait is ... annoying...

static,
@static@aus.social avatar

@markrprior There is. The help article says it can take up to 5 days.

static,
@static@aus.social avatar

@markrprior I dunno what they're doing. The help docs are vague. I've got 10 designs uploaded and will probably add a few more in the next few days.

static,
@static@aus.social avatar

@markrprior That would likely be it, then. I highly doubt mine would ever hit that.

Websites that wait to show you the password field until after you’ve submitted your username should be fined $50,000 per login.

@static@aus.social avatar

@dan Some sites do it so they have a chance at logging you in with another authentication method. It can also happen with some OpenId Connect scenarios where what asks for the password can be different from what asks for the username (probably my greatest dislike about OIDC).

@gnitro @kpop Cool to see someone else doing new Kpop playlists! We at AusKpopLovers did it for a couple of years.

I'd forgotten that "Lords and Ladies" is the one where Granny Weatherwax thinks she is about to die.

@PixelBandits I wonder if Terry seriously considered doing it. Problem is, at this point there was no heir apparent and wouldn't be for quite a few books. And even when he found a likely heir, an even better one turned up later.

Perused a big thread about NBNco being wilful idiots. Not going to put my oar in but NBNco really really really needs to be subject to the Ombudsman and the Ombudsman needs big, sharp teeth to deal with them.

    @decryption Had you considered a Fisher & Paykel? I think they're in that price range.

    I’ve got a day off tomorrow, so instead of banging on about my music, I’m going to stay up late listening to yours.

    If you’re an on or and you have a toot with a track you’d like to promote, link your toot in the comments and I’ll give it a boost.

    [edit: If you’re a musician or songwriter here on Mastodon and have your music somewhere else, please share a link! This is about the artists and their music, not any platform!]

    Let’s listen to some original 🤘

    @dgar I'm still trying to get some momentum in creating music. I don't have a particular track to promote, but I do have a https://soundcloud.com/staticsan

    Still re-working my way through Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. I finished "Witches Abroad" last night - and this is where I spot Terry found a new trope to mine. He'd spent at least three books working with versions of the unwilling heir, but I think during (or maybe before) "Moving Pictures" he realized just how much stories - or, as he would later call it, narrative causality - can make other things happen. He really leans into this with "Witches Abroad". I know he kept using it, too.

    He also starts playing with what belief can do, which really comes out in the next novel, "Small Gods".

    It's interesting watching this develop. I wasn't in a place to see this the last two times I read the whole Discworld corpus in published order.

    @jonoabroad @decryption It looks like Docker no longer supports creating layers on a running host. Or at least the instructions seem to omit how to do this. You have to start with a base image from the repository.

    static,
    @static@aus.social avatar

    @decryption @jonoabroad Oh there are thousands of base images built on existing distros. :-) My point is that Docker's underlying "layer" technology started as a way of creating a virtual host that had just the necessary changes from the hosting system. This is what made it extremely lightweight. But this no longer appears to be
    possible.

    static,
    @static@aus.social avatar

    @decryption @jonoabroad Oh! That's it! I just looked it up and that's exactly what Docker was originally built on! But no longer is...

    LXC is what you're looking for, not Docker. Specifically, LXD which sits on top of LXC. I've been thinking of they call "system containers". https://linuxcontainers.org/lxd/introduction/
