Article commenting on the lunacy of everything having to be five stars to be good. Agreed. When I was reviewing comedy shows for The Age, I ran the gamut from awarding 1 to 5 stars. It was useful.

Airbnb rating: why four stars is a fail

@imalcolm @timrichards I think Ebay might have predated that. Many Ebay sellers for many years have asked for 5 stars and say to contact them first before giving them anything lower.

@timrichards @imalcolm Understandably.

This injecting stuff people don't actually follow is increasing engagement?

All it's doing to me is driving me off these platforms.

What is wrong with people that they actually engage more?

@timrichards @bastardsheep I can tolerate FB (with some tools) - and kind of have to as I have certain people I need to be able to hear from and they are nowhere else.

I had a weird realization today:
You know how I make terrible keyboards? It turns out I can also made good keyboards!

Well, kinda. I had this silly gamer keyboard I kept around because it was small and I used it when I needed a random USB keyboard, but it was horrible to use. No contrast on the key labels...

but wait I have a bunch of keycaps since I'm a keyboard-making punk. what if I just put some onto it... and now it's readable! and looks snappy!

static,
@static@aus.social avatar

@foone I actually really dislike this layout and don't understand why everyone is using it for this form factor. The right-column keys are too easy to hit when I want Enter or Backspace, and the cursor keys have no physical separation which means I usually have to look at them to hit the correct one. The old Happy Hacking Keyboard 2 was much better but it is sadly unique.

I just want to know the terminology for the technology that allows a battery backed PV system to continue to function in the event of an outage.

static,
@static@aus.social avatar

@decryption @jonoabroad It's called "islanding" and some electricity providers don't like it.

Systems that "island" have to be able to isolate everything from the mains if the grid goes out. Systems that don't do and just shut completely down instead are (I think) cheaper and called "anti-islanding".

Okay let's see how wet over walking home from the station.

static,
@static@aus.social avatar

@BeAware It's a 10 minute walk through and out of a shopping centre, about half of which is covered. I got a little damp. Still, could be worse...

I’m awake early because my last two leaky windows are getting replaced right now. Lots of banging right now but for a good cause.

Pity it didn’t happen before the huge storm the other day, but better late than never.

@kcarruthers There is reportedly a whole lot of wet days later this week.

I thinking that the root cause of the current war Israel is waging is that they don't regard Palestinians as human on the same level as themselves. This is probably a problem all over the world, TBQH.

Half-watched the SBS news item about Bruce Lehrmann. He seems to be in a long way over his head. The phrase "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" comes to mind.

@stufromoz He's become famous for all the wrong reasons. And the likes of Channel 7 producers have definitely not helped.

Unrealated: when was the last time you cleaned your espresso machine?

static,
@static@aus.social avatar

@jpm When I had an automatic machine, I eventually realized it needed cleaning way more often than the manufacturer tells you to. Especially when I didn't use it much more than once a week.

I don't have an espresso machine anymore. I have a single-cup drip filter and a hand-grinder.

    @decryption Oh yeah. I bought GTA V for PS3 for $22. I later said it may have been the best $22 I ever spent.

    static,
    @static@aus.social avatar

    @decryption Absolutely!

    The first time I completed GTA V story mode, I sat through and read the credits. The entire credits. If I wasn't in awe of the game already, I soon was all over again! They ran for 45 minutes!

    @jpm @decryption I've played over 230 hours of House Flipper and still not finished it... I've heard this is not atypical for this game.

    @melissabeartrix Someone after all the copper in the transformer.

    Many years ago, I had a CRT TV die of old age. Since I had acquired a replacement, Dad put it out for the council cleanup. Overnight, someone broke the back off and removed the yoke off the CRT. All that copper.

    I was a bit sad - I'd loved that TV and had bought it new - but it was out as trash...
