It turns out, actual engineering is a lot harder than software engineering, and this is something you should keep in mind as people start to claim ChatGPT can do a better job.

@emilygorcenski I have been thinking about the usage of that video game controller, too. Yes, it may have had all the required features, and yes, such devices may have been in use for other (less critical) purposes by the military as well, but here, it still reinforced the message "We don't care", I think. In my experience, people who really prioritize safety make very sure to never create such an impression. I guess this is partly about culture.

“The suburban doctrine dictates that public space be limited, and conflict-free where it exists; that private space serve only as a place of commodity exchange; that surveillance, hyper-individualism, and constant vigilance are good and normal and keep people safe. It is an ideology that extends beyond the suburbs; it infects everything.”

Outstanding article on how the suburbs radicalize people into fascism.

@bkeegan I spent 2 years in a very affluent area near NY (North Stamford/CT), and this pretty much describes what I hated about it. No sidewalks, no public transportation and almost no "Third Places" other than church, shopping mall & places meant for alcohol consumption. Everyone told me to be happy & find myself a wealthy husband to live like that forever. However, this also confirmed for me that this „admirable“ life was very much tailored to money-focused people with traditional role models.
