I feel like so many women would end their relationship with the men in their life if they stopped living on hope and potential and actually acknowledged the behaviour in front of them.
Pretty sure my mom would never have stayed with my dad if she did just this one adjustment to her thinking.
She expressed so much disappointment and anger (by her standards which is very muted by most people’s standards) regarding something my dad said about me today (which I overheard from the other room and did not find it surprising in the least) and I can only shrug knowing absolutely nothing will change.

stephaniepixie,

@rick

I would gladly give up my existence so my mom could pick a husband who cares about communication and connection like she does. Sigh… I used to feel so much anger about this but with therapy I now just feel a mixture of sadness and resignation.
My one consolation is that my mom’s denial is so strong she bounces back to contentment pretty quickly 😝

stephaniepixie,

@rick

I’m pretty confident that’s changing with younger generations. There’s more openness about mental health and emotions in general, gender (which affects mentality about division of labour in the household), sexuality (which affects behavioural expectations), and a lot more that challenges patriarchal assumptions and expectations in relationships.
Just seeing my brother and I (both Gen X) and how different we are in relationships and with ourselves compared to my parents gives me hope but not sure how much of an impact we have on the world especially since neither of us are raising children or interacting much with anyone outside our age group.

The music coming out of the independent scene in the UK lately has me entirely blown away.

Fun Britt fact: I can play a lot of instruments and played in bands throughout my youth. I miss it. :) Good times. Good memories.

Nothing really connects for me like good music. Nothing.

stephaniepixie,

@britt

Ooh I didn’t know about your musical skills. What’s your favourite musical instrument to play?

stephaniepixie,

@britt

You could be an entire band if you cloned yourself 😄
Do you still play the acoustic guitar? I’ve only seen you post photos of your vast collection of records but I don’t recall any of guitars.

stephaniepixie,

@britt

I could probably carry a tune with spoons à la Québécoise but otherwise all my artistic talent went towards drawing/painting 😁

I just never pursued music other than listening to it. My mom can play the piano casually and my dad tells me he used to play the clarinet. I’ve heard him play the harmonica quite well and he can whistle melodiously.
It’s my brother who plays the acoustic guitar and possibly other instruments but I’ve only seen him play the guitar.
In his 20s he used to be in a band called Sweet Thing (he was the lead singer) and one of their songs was on the Easy A (with Emma Stone) film soundtrack but they disbanded shortly after. Now he jams with friends.

stephaniepixie,

@britt

“Change of Seasons” by Sweet Thing.
If I recall correctly (haven’t seen the movie in over 10 years!) they play the demo version in the background in the beginning of the movie and the album version later on. I imagine the published soundtrack only has the album version but I can’t remember 😄

My brother is so young here but this is the official video with my handsome bro, Owen, in white pants 😄 They filmed it in California.

As young kids people thought we were twins. We’re less than 2 years apart in age.
The world is indeed small and sometimes cosy ☺️

It’s going to be a very warm weekend for us on the west coast of Canada.

I’m not a fan of the heat - mostly because there is no AC to help me with body temp regulation.

I know it’ll be brief but these heat waves always make me fatigued and anxious — so please send photos of your cute pets! 🐱🐶🐰

I was looking at prices for online dating apps since you basically can’t interact without a premium membership and holy fuck $54CAD/month for OKCupid 🫢

I’m not even sure if I’m ready to get out there and there’s no way I’m dipping my toes in the dating pool for that much 😝

Some sites are $35/month but still. Perpetual singledom for introverted broke girls I guess.

Solarium.

Taken just now. I have no idea how well a pano will be viewable on Mastodon, so here’s a link to the full image:

stephaniepixie,

What a lovely scene. I want to be there so badly

stephaniepixie,

@rick

I would personally have a lot less stuff in that space (that much usually stresses me out) but the colours, the plants, the windows and that leaf pattern window panels (whatever you call them) are lovely. The view too! Just looks so peaceful.

stephaniepixie,

@rick

It’s funny how couples can be still be compatible in spite of these differences. I struggle with clutter but I’ve learned to look the other way for a certain amount.

stephaniepixie,

@rick

I’ve never been in a relationship longer than 3 years so I don’t know what’s that’s like to figure all that out over time.
I know I struggled with one person who left a lot more stuff lying around than I was comfortable with but if we had had the option to have more space (it’s hard with financial restrictions) it probably would’ve been less of a problem. But I don’t think it gave her joy either so it was a bit different than Corri who is deliberately creating a space she feels good about.

stephaniepixie,

@rick

I imagine unlearning old habits while still in the same relationship can be challenging compared to starting from scratch but it must be pretty satisfying when you make it work. That depth of understanding maybe helps give more space for differences.
You both sound like the kind of people I’d like to meet in person 😊

stephaniepixie,

@rick

Sounds like a fun combo 😂

Thank you 🙏

Love how the word “bird” has all but vanished from our online vocabulary and been replaced by “birb” 🦜

stephaniepixie,

@britt

I love it. I don’t know why or how but it’s such a cute version of the original word.

So… anyone know how to find people to load your U-Haul instead of paying like $100/person per hour to corporations sub-contracting?

Ugh.

We have been quoted $2,700 to load a 15’ U-Haul. TWENTY SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS. lol

We have also been quoted $800, but that still feels high for 2 hours.

Help. I’m afraid to post on FB seeking help, I don’t want to be scammed.

We’re on Vancouver Island.

stephaniepixie,

@britt

$2700 sounds like the scam 😝

I wish I could help you. I haven’t hired someone to load a truck in about 10 years and it was about $200 for a couple of hours for a one bedroom.
Maybe it’s $800 for lots of stuff but definitely not $2700 wtf.
Have you tried maybe posting in private queer groups like this one? Not a guarantee it’ll be a good outcome but I think it increases the chances.
They include the island so maybe there’s someone local who would be willing to do it for $100-200/hour and some snacks/bevies.

stephaniepixie,

@britt

I only thought about it because I was part of a similar group while I lived in Vancouver which I would’ve recommended but it’s only for the mainland. I found it super useful when I needed to sell my stuff. I felt good knowing my plants were going to a happy queer home 😌🪴
I noticed that many people would post about needing help with either car share or being a driver to carry heavy stuff or helping pack etc., so I figure maybe you’d get some joy with requesting muscles. Maybe even make a friend along the way.

I think one of the toughest parts about summer for me is that my body wakes up with the sun. I mean… like… even the smallest bit of sun light anywhere 😆

I write to you at 8 minutes past official ‘sunrise’ on the west coast.

It’s been a lifelong battle to get myself to sleep in past sunrise in Canada and get a proper sleep.

And yes, I use black out blinds but they’re not perfect.

Brains. 🙃

stephaniepixie,

@britt

That sounds like a rough experience. I’m the flip side of that and sleep better once the sun rises and feel more awake around sunset.
Brains indeed!

stephaniepixie,

@britt
I love falling asleep at sunrise. Only reason I don’t live my life that way is because day people tend to be very judgy and/or because my work schedule didn’t accommodate (oddly enough I had many jobs that required waking up before 4am to start at 5am 😝).
Although when I worked at a restaurant I did pretty much go to bed when I started hearing the robins sing and that’s when I noticed I felt more like myself.

Entire childhood of being forced into a morning routine was terrible but I never struggled to wake up. I was just extra quiet on top of my shy disposition.

Now I tend to go to bed around 3am but that’s mostly because I get woken up by my parents’ sounds (or neighbours’ lawn mowing noise) in the morning so my sleep is often disrupted.
Who knows what I’d be like in a quiet countryside but I have the sense I’d always be a night owl.
