sudo,

I think OP is moreso referring to the actual communities than users themselves. Parking empty user accounts is one thing, as they exist but don’t really cause any issues, but empty communities may lead to unmoderated places, a lack of rules, etc.

I do imagine with the influx of bots those ghost accounts could get purged though. At least using them once to have some traceable account activity would be enough to have them persist through an initial wave.

at the time of the killing

See, she was a racist piece of shit who hated blacks up until the day of the shooting but since she wasn’t overtly racist while she murdered the children’s mother it’s okay, they let those things go in Florida. What they don’t let go is things like letting people of color knock on doors in order to have conversations between adults.

Not if Brazil has anything to say about that. Chinese companies want their beef, soy and palm oil.

‘Historic’ number of people don’t want this thing happening for the first time to happen.

Wow, such history!

Hopefully Desantis and Trump spend much of their money, time, and effort shitting all over one another to lessen the chance of fascist scum finding their way back into the Whitehouse.

"We have investigated ourselves and found we did nothing wrong."

It's a good thing Texas is on its own non-federally regulated energy grid or someone might have lost a few dollars spending money to weatherize and properly maintaining it.

But its not like they could have known after it failed in 2011 that not bothering to address the issues causing those failures for a decade would leave it susceptible to another failure. It's obviously the customers fault for relying on the system to keep their families warm in freezing temperatures and not booking a flight to Cancun to escape the 'once in a lifetime weather event' that Texas has seen several times in fractions of a lifetime.

sudo,

Yes, it is very much a terrible idea. If you aren't prepared to properly operate an instance, outside of making one for solely your own use, don't.

How hard is it to make a tabletop game? (by yourself)

So right now im experemting with diffrent hobyy, i wante dto make a video game but im putting it to th eside for a while. i just thought making some other game might be easier like a table top game, i would play one but i have a hard time finding any that i like, cheap/free, and i dont have anyone irl to play with which is...

sudo,

What's your goal in making a game? You mention you haven't got many people to play with irl, so are you considering making a single player game?

Are you just trying to save money so you don't need to pay for other games? (If it's this one, I've got some bad news for you as making games is extremely time intensive. It may be relatively cheap but you'd be better off working part time for a week and buying the game you want rather than spending hundreds or thousands of hours creating something new.)

Another thing to consider, even if you are making a single player game, is you're going to need to test your game. A lot. And while testing on your own, hundreds of times, is going to be necessary, you're also going to need to get feedback from other players - some who will struggle through your rules to learn how to play, helping you improve that aspect. Others who will try to break the game, helping you balance the game. Others will simply play it and just give you feedback to tell you whether or not it's fun, but if you want other people to be and to enjoy your game (and not everyone will, no matter how good it is) you'll need other people to test it and give a perspective you simply can't have developing it entirely on your own.

You said you don't have access to a lot of games already, but having experience playing a wide variety of different games of different genres will be important to help you figure out what your game needs to make it fun and balanced.

I'd suggest putting some time into researching game design theory to help you understand what kinds of things are going on under the hood in game development.

Most importantly, make sure you're having fun doing it. Game development can be a slog but if you're passionate about what you're doing it's worth it enjoying your game and seeing others enjoy your game in the end.

Futurama food (lemmy.world)

So I am thinking about hosting a Futurama party for the new season premiere. I want to have Futurama theme food and drinks. First thing that comes to my head is Popplers (popcorn chicken or shrimp) and the Slurm recipe I found here https://www.theflavorbender.com/homemade-slurm-drink-futurama/. What other food/drink ideas do you...

sudo,

Not the most interesting but I feel like you definitely need pizza. With anchovies of course.

sudo,

Feels like this Beehaw section of the article is missing the mark in it's failure to recognize Lemmy or the Fediverse as a whole.

My electric kettle is almost always on. One with stay warm function and temperature control is great to accommodate the different temps I may want for various teas or coffee. It's also useful for speeding up cooking when I need to get a pot of water boiling.

I can't necessarily recommend a specific one though, my old gooseneck spout kettle was great for pouring but the screws holding the handle in place rusted out and the plastic clips broke. My current one is insolated to help stay warm longer which is nice but the plastic lid has begun deteriorating. The only advice I could really offer is find something with as little plastic as possible in it's construction, especially where it may touch water or steam.

The FBI Is Hunting a New Domestic Terror Threat: Abortion Rights Activists (theintercept.com)

“Pro-abortion terrorism is sweeping our nation,” Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., wrote in a column last June, lamenting that “only after the outcry from the pro-life community did the FBI announce an investigation” into Jane’s Revenge — a small group of activists that firebombed an anti-abortion pregnancy center on June 7,...

sudo,

It's difficult to take anything Rubio is saying seriously (I mean who would anyway, he's a Florida Republican) after his very likely deliberate choice in rhetoric calling them "Pro Abortion" rather than acknowledging a woman's choice to control her own body.

We're growing quite fast! Let's discuss our future and what you'd like us to do. [META]

Hello everyone! First of all, I'd like to say thank you to every one of you for your support! Our community is about to be the first user-made one to reach 1K users/week on this instance. And our friends over at Ask Lemmy and Mildly Infuriating are following very closely, which is just as amazing!...

IPv4 is the old standard of Internet Protocol addresses that you're probably familiar with (something like 192.168.1.10, although the 192.168.x.x range is actually only private addresses). It's still used on most devices today but it only supports up to ~4.3 billion addresses and as you can imagine, those addresses have basically run out with all of the various devices and servers and whatever else is connected to the internet. IPv4 is in the process of being replaced by the new (10 27* year old) IPv6, but there are still a lot of old devices and a need to support the old protocol. Making IPv6 available for this server will mean any devices connected to the internet should be able to communicate with the server on this new protocol.

As for DNSSEC, when you go to resolve a a hostname, like lemmy.world, your computer will make a request to a DNS server to figure out what IP address it needs to navigate to in order to access the server. In theory, someone could intercept your DNS request and tell you an address for the server that isn't actually the address for the server, but rather a malicious host. DNSSEC basically acts as a layer of security to help confirm that information you're getting on your DNS request is good and true.

sudo,

Was going to post that top quote as well, that's pretty rich. The equivalent of "It's not a threat, it's a promise".

After doubling down there's literally nothing that they could do that would bring me back. They've taken a hard stance that has exhausted any goodwill and made it plain to see they only see their users as dollar signs.

sudo,

Unfortunately if there isn't something implemented to also help regulate battery costs, I see this turning into manufacturers charging exorbitantly for batteries (to pass their additional manufacturing costs to the customer of course) resulting in a large number of people buying shitty Chinese knockoffs that are produced under poor standards that will need to be replaced even more, potentially causing a net increase in overall battery production and recycling waste.

sudo,

I've noticed a few things going on with this.

If you're viewing the image or linked url and simply click on the thumbnail for a direct link it doesn't appear to recognize that post as having been read. You actually need to click on the title/comments to access the post for that to be recognized.

But beyond that, if you are viewing a post from your front page, it doesn't actually reflect the post as having been read until you reload/refresh/restart the app. Even if you leave the front page to navigate into a community or profile it doesn't appear to refresh this data to reflect what's been read.

Strangely, clicking a link from within a given community rather than from your front page will reflect that post as read while going back from the post and viewing the community. But then returning to your front page from there still won't have updated the post as read.

It's a bit wonky and will likely be updated in the future but hopefully this helps you for now.

sudo,

How does Redact handle the current API rate limits on Reddit? I've been using Power Suite Delete the past few days to purge my footprint and help incentive myself to move on, but every pass consistently has comments that aren't overwritten because it's hitting limits and moving on instead of queueing actions.

Also, I've noticed apparently not all of my account's content is listed consistently which is why I've been running it for a few days now. Every couple hours a few new posts or comments are shown that were just nowhere to be found before.

[Dead Company Refugee] I've not seen a single ad...

First post on the glorious Fediverse. I joined the moment the protest start, and I have to say, I have yet to see a single advertisement, targetted or otherwise, sans a few honest (fedditors? Don't hang me) offering commission work. I was born just in time to see the death of IRC and the birth of targetted advertising and social...

sudo,

So I took a look at the opinions post you linked and see the top comment by 'wheelcultist' was removed, as well as the rest of their comments in that thread. Seeing the user's profile, they are marked as banned. But then searching the mod log I can't find any information on that user or how they came to be banned. I appreciate the transparency of mod logs for all users but this has me a bit confused.

sudo,

Ahh, I see. Thanks for the followup. With the vast array of instances and communities with different rules and experiences they want to offer their users, it's nice having open and transparent moderation. But yeah that definitely seems like an issue that should be addressed on two counts. Having no log for purging an account, the most nuclear option, seems like a clear contradiction to transparent policies. And being able to accidentally do that without realizing, versus a temp ban or something, is definitely not ideal.

From what I understand, right now moderation tools for the platform are quite limited so I appreciate the additional effort that you and other moderators are putting in to maintaining these communities!
