The World is Throwing a Fit of Collective Amnesia

“Four years ago, a dangerous new virus started spreading. Nobody knew anything about it. We had no choice but to use masks and social distancing. They protected us. We wore masks that were okay but not great. We got vaccines, but not great ones. Now we know better. We have better masks. We have better air purifiers. We're developing better vaccines. We have nose sprays. We could actually control Covid instead of submitting to constant infection that results in inevitable disability and slow death. We don't have to accept it.”

I just discovered the Mastodon version, @mastoreaderio. Thanks @badlogic !

It does needs a little magic https://github.com/fivefilters/ftr-site-config/pull/1370. It would be handy to have some HTML5 semantics to find content and author more easily.

But all in all, the basic functionality is here!

So, you're confused about Redict using the LGPL. I thought you weren't allowed to change the license of a FOSS project like that?

Well, you're right to raise an eyebrow at that, but note that this only applies to copyleft projects. Permissive licenses are characterized by, perhaps even defined by the fact that you can sublicense them.

To relicense a copyleft project you would need all of the copyright holders to agree. A CLA is designed to grant a single entity[...]

shtrom,
@shtrom@piaille.fr avatar

@drewdevault I just occurred to me that using Free software licenses was a Ulysses Pact. And that having CLA was a way to wiggle out of it.

I'll view all CLAs with suspicion from now on, and likely avoid contributing if I can.

I sometimes say, half jokingly, that I have PTSD regarding my kids being sick (mostly from stomach flu, not from a life threatening sickness thank god).

Last weekend I was told by a loved one that I might have PTSD from covid pandemic.

I'm not sure what to think of that comment. Yes, I still take precautions. The pandemic never stop in my view. And I'm definitely angry at how everything was handled. "We tried nothing and we are out of ideas".

People have moved on, but we are not in a good situation. Nothing I read shows positive signs. When I point that out I get told that such studies need to be taken with a grain of salt, for example the methodology wasn't sound enough. Sure I get this, it's never all black or white, that's how science moves. The issue I have is that I don't see positive studies at all, good or bad methodology. So all the signals are mostly negative, the question becomes how much negative. Debating how bad a situation is does not make it good.

What I find difficult is to protect my family when the world does not care. I can't put my kids in a bubble. I can't control what my spouse is doing (and I don't want to!) I know I can protect myself, but my efforts are moot if the kids catch anything at school where nobody cares.

shtrom,
@shtrom@piaille.fr avatar

@trendless @ALoneMasker It sucks so much. These generations will look back at us in anger. And rightfully so.

One of the biggest myths is that “kids can't protect themselves, so don't even try”. Kids are little information sponges. They can learn, very quickly, how, why and when to wear respirators, and how to do it better than most adults.

It's not a 100% guarantee against school-acquired airborne diseases, but that's one effective step, and this is teaching them how to get some control over the situation, rather than giving in.

I suspect there is always a risk of bullying, but I've only read of well informed kids who stood strong with their masking.

I plan to demonstrate that any democratic government—by its very nature and under its own terms—will have a dangerous anti-democratic opposition because eliminating the opposition cannot be done using democratic means.

The opposition can be blunted and, with constant work. . .

I just realised, while looking at my electricity bill, that GST is not paid over the final bill amount, but on each item separately, and the feed-in tariff is applied last. So the GST ends up being about 12.5% of the bill, so about 14.5% rather than 10%.

Is this a common way to calculate tax on a utility bill with feed-in?

The joys of telling a device to change its baud rate over the serial link it is using.

P.S. Now is the time I am very glad I have a power control on the device allowing me to cleanly reset it to known default Baud rate when needed.

shtrom,

@revk I once did that to a Cisco RomMon. Amusingly, it accepts any baud rate, so of course I set it to a non-standard baudrate that I couldn't work out how to make Linux TTYs work at.

Fixing included pain, a MAX232, and an arduino pretending to be a human admin.

In general I do like this pattern, though: if you have a daemon which needs to be root for some reason, fork into a second process that keeps root, setuid the main process to non-root, and use a Unix socketpair to provide a small API surface for the non-root process to use to ask the root process to perform privileged operations

@flameeyes The year is young q:

Start it now while looking for a better solution.

That said, there might be a way to parallelise the tar bit. You'd also need the tar file in the output.

It woud be a pity to find yourself 5 days in, having confirmation that the file is present, but still not where 😅
