    @cakeisnotalie at the end of the day, it sounds like a lot of your requirements are about how to run windows software on Linux and the unfortunate reality is that you will always struggle to find a distro shaped to that need.

    If you're looking for a GUI that feels at home to a Windows user, I might recommend running any distro with KDE. Many can be installed that way out of the box.

    As far as running windows software, you'll likely need to install supporting software like Wine—though that'll come with drawbacks and limitations, depending on the software that you need to use.

    @cakeisnotalie if you're unhappy with Microsoft as a company, are you really going to be happy running Microsoft's software on a different OS?

    I 100% understand the challenge and the dream to get away from Microsoft, but would recommend if you can trying to learn some software alternatives. I know that can be a big lift, but it can often be a necessary evil if you want to get away from the big orgs like Microsoft.

    Also a word of caution: I've never seen a Linux journey that doesn't include using the command line. So as much as you may love a GUI, the Linux world has many folks that lean in the CLI direction. I think non-technical users can get away without using it in some cases, but if you work in tech, want to run windows software on a Linux system, and want to keep using GUIs whenever possible.... I'd just be warned that sometimes it won't be possible.

    #introduction post! New nerd on the block, #nonbinary, they/them. Likes #opensource stuff, believes in using #SEO for evil, and mostly just wants to read good #scifi all the time... Just finished re-reading #Watchmen.

    Will post re: books, tech, political rants, and whatever else is on my head... then might get overwhelmed and disappear for a while, lurking in the background for a while before coming back with a vendetta against myself.
