Today is Ritual Roasters’s 19 anniversary. I moved to SF a few weeks prior to Ritual’s opening and spent a lot of time at their location on Valencia St (I lived a block away). Over the years I’ve made a lot of art and friends at this location too. Happy birthday, Ritual!

Me in line at Ritual Roasters. I’m wearing a grey KN95 mask, a Benders baseball cap, and a Tech Won’t Save Us hoodie in bright yellow.

@DocPop here's a great write up with Sickid about his art around LA. https://www.avantpopbooks.com/post/the-artist-sickid-s-twisted-parallel-universe
His painting style is very different than his slaps, but you can see some crossover from time to time. https://www.instagram.com/sickid1/

This podcast about the bike lane, and the hissy fits some business owners are throwing, is a must listen.

BikeCurious and @notjustbikes covered this story better than most of our local news outlets did. If course this type of story isn't unique to , but businesses stop complaining when the new lanes bring more business.

You can find it on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gboI4MjwzIU

One day, I'll visit here with some company. As a lone woman, I try to leave here before sunset because at this time of day, by the time I climb back up the very steep hill trail and walk back to where there are lots of people, it is dark. I'm glad I "chanced" a later time, but still couldn't linger to see how the sky might change. I loved the mist and the rock silhouettes. Straight ahead is the Pacific; behind, to the right, the Golden Gate Bridge.

Okay, but when will Apple apologize for removing the 3.5mm headphone jack?

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird yo, I love my AirPods so much. They are fantastic! But there are times, many times, I wish I could use something else. Sometimes it’s because of connectivity issues, sometimes it’s because my AirPods are low on juice, sometimes it’s because I want to use a nicer pair of headphones in my collection that aren’t Bluetooth. So no hate on my AirPods, I just hate that Apple took away the option.

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@AnneMacro @futurebird audio sounded fine through the adapter. The problem was that I’d rarely have the adapter with me when I wanted to switch to a pair of wired headphones. Dongles are fine, when you remember to pack them.

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@phi1997 when Apple ditched the headphone, I was totally ready to switch to Android. Particularly the Pixel line, which my partner loves, but then Google removed headphone jacks from Pixels too. Seems like a huge mistake for Google, because they could have siphoned off a lot of Apple's user base.

Steve Albini. Fond memories of the many times was in town. When there was time in the tour schedule, they would invite everyone back for pancakes on Sunday, and a morning show. It’s nice to see the letters, kranky takes, and tales of Bob Weston saving the day by salvaging a power supply to continue recording as scheduled. Guy was punk, and like many aging punks, needs more rest than they know. Fuck heart attacks.

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@bentomn I appreciated this part “Albini hated being called a producer, despite having worked on multiple touchstone recordings. His detractors dragged him for being pedantic, but were rarely curious about why he preferred ‘engineer.’ … As Albini saw it, his job was to document a band at a specific point in their career, making the drums, especially, sound excellent. He wasn’t there to fix a song’s structure, or boldly suggest phase shifting everything during the song’s bridge.”

@suldrew that looks awesome. I'll have to try it sometime. I've been enjoying Barrel Bros non-alcoholic options https://www.barrelbrothersbrewing.com/store#!/Craft-Non-Alcoholic-Beer/c/145311778

@pmonks @suldrew thanks for the suggestions! If you can get it, I suggest Barrel Bros "Beam Me Up IPA". They were made for beer week, so might be getting a little old by now, but they are still very tasty. https://www.barrelbrothersbrewing.com/store#!/Non-Alcoholic-Beam-Me-Up-4pk/p/628189329/category=145311778

Steve Albini had a huge influence on me in my teens. Not just the records he produced, but also his strong opinions on art, DIY ethos, and fighting corporate culture.

Luckily, I didn't see the edgelord shit he was writing back in the 90s, because that probably would have influenced me too.

I think this twitter thread he wrote in 2021, where he expresses regret and says he should be held accountable, is worth a read. https://twitter.com/electricalWSOP/status/1448050175658713092

Mission Comics asked me to design a t-shirt as part of their "Save Mission Comics" fundraiser. The shirt will be available in a few weeks, but you can sign up to get notified when they are available. All proceeds go to MC as part of the "Save Mission Comics" campaign. https://www.backerkit.com/call_to_action/5ed77483-3782-4824-8639-496cb83b8057/landing

@jetton I didn't mean to throw MC under the bus in this post, I was just phrasing it in a silly way. They thought the idea was cool, but it was a little gruesome for their audience/vibe.

The lesson from the center bikeway debacle: when you "compromise" in such a way that you lose the confidence of the people you're building FOR—cyclists, in this case—you fail.

While some of us now defend this bike lane as a partial improvement, no one loved it. It didn't boost bike riding, and made it hard for cyclists to pull over and stop at a business. So businesses got all the downsides and no upside. It didn't have to be this way.

https://missionlocal.org/2024/04/businesses-join-legal-battle-valencia-center-bike-lane/

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@williampietri @scott the rollout was the worst part for sure. It took 6 weeks, when the project was clearly ready in 2. That bad start soured many cyclists on the whole project.

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@scott I hated the center lane at first, but have grown to really like it for many reasons. It's certainly a huge improvement from the non-existent bike lane we had before. I'd still prefer side running lanes though.

I'll also add that cyclists has increased and it sounds like local businesses can see a small uptick in sales, but both of those improvements were very modest. Side running would probably be a more singificant improvement for businesses and folks who use the bike lane.
