Spent a good chunk of my life anticipating Stanley Kubrick & Arthur C Clarke’s sleek vision of the future but ended up in Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights & Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner.
@tantramar It's inevitable that some artist — author, musician, or filmmaker — will make something that isn't for you, and that's a strength, not a weakness! As our own poet laureate once said, the spaces inbetween leave room for you and I to grow…
this whole OpenAI/Scarlett Johansson thing really boils down to… a man who thought he could take what he wanted from a woman even after she clearly said no.
An ad agency I was once associated with ran radio ads in the early 2000s that used a Donald Sutherland sound-alike — and he was really good. Some voice-over guy in Toronto or Vancouver who basically made a living doing this impersonation.
a friend — whom I’ve known 30 years — recently pulled me (back) into WhatsApp. She has a Mac & an iPad, but video chat with her granddaughter happens on WhatsApp; there are no Meta-is-evil arguments more powerful than that.
It immediately requested full access to my contacts, which I denied, explicitly to be uploaded to Meta’s servers.
Apple should disallow this. People have the right to share their own info with Meta (et al) — they do NOT have the right to share other people’s.
@tantramar
I won't reply about how evil Meta is (Meta is evil), I'd just like to ask why they aren't using Signal instead? Some time ago there has been a leak of data stolen from Meta showing that Mark Suckerberg himself isn't using WhatsApp but Signal. It's free, it offers nearly all the features WhatsApp has to offer and (last but not least) it's NOT a Meta App... I like it though I still prefer Threema. @sentient_water
@HailSatan@sentient_water Her son is her tech advisor, is more than capable, and has settled on WhatsApp. Not my place to push back on that, and she didn’t ask my opinion. I’m with you, though, on Signal vs. WhatsApp. 100%.
Someone pointed out on a podcast recently that in the metric system, there are units — metres, grams, litres, etc. — and that all multi-unit prefixes are Greek (deca, kilo, mega) while all sub-unit prefixes (deci, centi, milli) are Latin. (Yes, since 1935 there have been exceptions… still.)
I’ve been using the metric system since I was 6 and never noticed this.
To troubleshoot a 3rd-party software issue, its lead developer/company owner (who has a beyond-stellar reputation and, despite having a number of employees, is handling my ticket personally) has asked me to move their app’s Application Support folder out of iCloud Drive.
It’s only about 3 MB (though 9000+ files).
“How long could that take?” you may ask.
Allow me to present iCloud Drive.
Last attempt fizzled out after an hour, throwing some sort of system alert. #Apple#iCloudDrive
