Hey it’s that time again.

The contention that using high-filtration masks to prevent transmission of respiratory disease is “unscientific” and “lacking evidence” when we have reams of aerosol and transmission studies is a display of either unawareness/scientific illiteracy (super fixable! non-shameful!) or of an intentional disregard of the evidence for emotional or ideological reasons (common but troubling).

@kissane@mas.to avatar

Hahaha sorry actually a third secret thing, I never expect other people’s risk calculations to match mine, which is good because they mostly don’t! It’s all incredibly messy, and my own decision has been to just do far fewer things without being mad at people who elect to never think about it. (Y’all can lecture me about how my feelings are wrong but egh, maybe just don’t.)

The demand that we toss all the lab studies and case studies on transmission isn’t cool though. 🤷🏻

A new gold standard review of 100 studies finds:

  • masks are effective in reducing transmission of respiratory diseases

  • N95 respirators are significantly more effective than medical or cloth masks

  • mask mandates are effective in reducing community transmission

The computer, however, will stop you from recording DRM'd content.

Find it fascinating that when faced with drawing safety and security boundaries, the primary beneficiary is not the owner of the device, or the person using it, but random corporations who control the intellectual property rights.

The system doesn't work for you.

I’ve had a favourite author for more than 20 years. I really didn’t like their second-last book — after loving everything else they’d ever written.

I’ve never reviewed or even named that book publicly (nor will I now). And I unhesitatingly bought their next book (which I still haven’t read).

@tantramar It's inevitable that some artist — author, musician, or filmmaker — will make something that isn't for you, and that's a strength, not a weakness! As our own poet laureate once said, the spaces inbetween leave room for you and I to grow…

If you ever get the chance to have your Mac run out of disk space and RAM, but say it didn't run out of disk space and RAM, I highly recommend it. You see, the files are managed for you, so you don't have to worry, except when your desktop wallpaper breaks, and you can't quit or launch apps, but under the hood it definitely is taking care of things.

From a particular lens, AI is almost perfect today. It’s a perfect replica of a the people who made it:

A dude who is spouting utter bullshit with astounding confidence.

And future iterations will only ramp-up the confidence level. Solving for accuracy is exponentially more difficult.
