Wondering today if the Senate would be able to reject Poilievre's proposed use of the notwithstanding clause by a future conservative govt.

I think they can definitely block a piece of legislation that has the nwc "pre-attached", like conservative & francofacist provincial govts have been doing. Or a piece of legislation that "invokes" it after a court decision.

Is the govt able to "invoke" the nwc outside of legislation?

GrumpusNation,
@GrumpusNation@mastodon.social avatar

@johnefrancis We may indeed be finding out, like our neighbours to the south, how much of what a government can and can't do is a matter of convention rather than tested law…

I’ve had a favourite author for more than 20 years. I really didn’t like their second-last book — after loving everything else they’d ever written.

I’ve never reviewed or even named that book publicly (nor will I now). And I unhesitatingly bought their next book (which I still haven’t read).

Support artists if you want to see more of their art.

@tantramar It's inevitable that some artist — author, musician, or filmmaker — will make something that isn't for you, and that's a strength, not a weakness! As our own poet laureate once said, the spaces inbetween leave room for you and I to grow…

@thomasfuchs The thing that bugged me the most reminded me of a quote from David Mamet, that film is superior to video because, after the (increasingly likely) apocalypse, someone could, without electricity, hold up a strip of film and see a story. Everything in that ad, every piano, guitar, toy, book, could last decades or centuries, but now seemingly all replaced by a device obsolete in years.

I'm heading to Alamo Drafthouse in SF tonight to take part in a 21 hour marathon viewing of movies. That's Star Wars 1 through 9, with live performances of the 501st Legion, and some bits of trivia and games. Rogue One and Solo will not be included.

I haven't watched episodes 1-3 since they were in theaters and I'm curious if I'll like them any better now than I did then.

March 31 was already significant to me because that's the day in 1998 when I helped Navigator become .

Now this day has a whole new meaning for me as a woman. And it's my first that I celebrate publicly since coming out to everyone on June 21 of last year.

To all my siblings, I see you. Even if complete visibility isn't possible for you right now. You still matter. You're still loved. And you're still trans. Never doubt that. 🏳️‍⚧️🫂💖

Sometimes when you get older you reminisce about a place and you long to go back. Then you realize that even if you did go back that place wouldn't be there anymore. It only existed as you experienced it in that moment of time.

That place is gone forever and only exists with you.

It's a lonely feeling.

They’re thinking of changing the name of Powell River: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/name-change-powell-river-divide-1.7145873?cmp=rss

OK, but how about we do “British Columbia”? It’s a horrible name, picked by Queen Victoria in 1858, and the locals hated it even back then.

GrumpusNation,

@timbray Interestingly, the Primary Care Network has already changed to "qathet", although traces of "Powel River" exist in domain names and email addresses: https://qathetpcn.ca/about-qpcn/

Divi Builder has menu options to generate content using “AI”/ChatGPT.

Sunday puzzle: if the universe is infinitely big and there's infinitely many galaxies and stars, there should be an infinite number of stars where ever you look in the night sky and the sky should be all white... yet the night sky is mostly dark. Why?

See if you can figure out why! I will post the solution in a reply in a while.

GrumpusNation,
@GrumpusNation@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Because most stars, like our sun, go down at night. Simple.

“A day after it plunged the city into darkness, it is also unclear if the raccoon, whose death is still unconfirmed, will be granted a candle-lit sidewalk vigil, the city’s unsanctioned process of mourning deceased critters.” I say this as a staunch anti-Toronto westerner, but goddamn, it’d be worth the trip for this…
