Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash… and I’m delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever!

Is the Captain Pike we know from Discovery and Strange New Worlds really the same dude from "The Cage"?

Like basically every current Star Trek fan, I love the character of Captain Pike as Anson Mount portrays him. I wonder, though, to what extent he is actually the same guy from “The Cage.” If we had only that episode to work from (which the Discovery and SNW writers initially did), we would know that he is broody, that he...

tenebrisnox,

Jeffrey Hunter is pretty wooden in the role (as are almost all the actors in The Cage). He comes across as a flat, somewhat listless characters with issues with women. Anson Mount plays the role with a much better sense of the humanity of Pike.

I’d love to see a literal remake but there are scenes that just wouldn’t work (eg. the creepy scene where the young female ensign speaks to him).

tenebrisnox,

The article didn’t mention that the shareholders - mostly the Wilkinson family - were essentially looting the company while it was in financial trouble.

I won’t be surprised if the owners had been funnelling money out of Wilco for years.

Another case of greed impacting on the jobs of ordinary people.

tenebrisnox,

It’s been reported in several places. For example:

“Despite its problems, owners of the chain, led by the Wilkinson family, took £3m in dividends in the 12 months to the end of February 2022.”

from Today’s Guardian

tenebrisnox,

You are right about this and it’s something I’d not given any thought to. Checking out your recommendations. Thank you.

tenebrisnox,

“I feel like I’m being mugged off.”

Welcome to capitalism in the UK 2023.

tenebrisnox,

At some point cars became a symbol of individualism. The number of people (men, really) I’ve worked with who insist on “buying” a new car every year was astonishing. Cars got bigger and bigger and flashier and flashier. All on finance though. Seemed like a weird, maschocistic addiction to me. Almost like they’d been brainwashed into car consumption.

What we actually need is a completely free at point of use public transport system. Break the weird car addition and help deal with the climate crisis.

tenebrisnox,

It will. Even if we could imagine a completely free, properly-networked public transport infrastructure, people would also need access to vehicles conveniently without having to own one.

Cars in UK (and probably all countries really) are like guns in the US. Suggesting that they give up theirs for a greater good is seen as some sort of immasculising curtailment of their God-given freedom.

tenebrisnox,

It’s the word “benefit” that needs to be fought against. It’s “social security” a means of supporting us all when we are vulnerable and need help, not something extra that can be dispensed with.

tenebrisnox,

Just listening to a piece on the radio about food poverty and the frequent reference to not being hungry as a “benefit” was horrific. So much in our society is normalised that is just so wrong.

tenebrisnox,

Can someone point the direction of info about the differences between buying Starfield outright or just Game Pass. Is there a difference?

tenebrisnox,

Take a look at OpenAudible.

I tried all sorts of stuff before getting OpenAudible and it works brilliantly. It costs about $20 (and there’s an upgrade about every year costing $8) but I’ve not upgraded and it still works perfectly.

tenebrisnox,

Mostly on a basic kindle. I read pdfs and comic books on an ipad.

I’m waiting for a decent colour eink reader about same size as my kindle with stylus/writing support. From what I can see, they are nearly there… but not quite.

tenebrisnox,

I wasn’t that impressed with M’Benga in season 1 but he’s had excellent character development this season. After this episode, I think he could be my favourite of the SNW crew!

tenebrisnox,

2nd vote for Obsidian.

I’ve moved from OneNote and Evernote about two years ago to Obsidian. I tried out (and still do look at) all the note-keeping apps and Obsidian beats hands down. For me, the major determiner was that it saves to plain text files that I can just transfer into any future app easily. The other aspect is that plug-ins enable you to tailor how Obsidian functions to your own working processes.

I’ve found keeping Obsidian in sync over iCloud pretty good as long as you keep the number of plug-ins on phone and iPad limited.

tenebrisnox,

Have you tried Remote Save plugin?

I use it to sync from a webdav on my NAS at home to work computer if I ever need it. It also syncs from services like OneDrive, Dropbox, S3 etc.

There are other versions of similar syncing.

tenebrisnox,

It just stores them to the folder you choose as a vault for your notes. I have seen people put their vaults on a USB stick which they encrypt for security.

No web version of Obsidian as far as I know. Have you tried SimpleNote?

tenebrisnox,

Seems to me the Tories are going into the General Election on “local issues” that they can then present themselves as the opposition to local government who are responsible for the decline in services. They know they’ll lose on the “big” national issues.

We got letters from our Tory MP a couple of days ago where there was absolutely NO Conservative branding at all. Photos of her standing in well-known locations about the town and the blurb was all about dealing with local issues. She’s been the MP for 15 years and is barely seen in the constituency (or in Parliament, either). She lives in a mansion in another county.

tenebrisnox,

Whenever I see a photo of her I think of Nye Bevan’s comments about Tories being “lower than vermin”.

(I really should get a tshirt made of the quote and have it ready when the Tory canvassers knock.)

tenebrisnox,

Not if the country went on “war footing” about the climate catastrophe and took measures to ensure that budgets were redirected into eco-investments (eg. stop spending £3 billion a year on the maintenance of 50 trident missiles). Radical investments in things like tidal power, completely free public transport etc. Where there’s a will there’s a way.

tenebrisnox,

Yes, this.

tenebrisnox,

Does Lemmy use markdown? (If so, why didn’t I know this???!!!)

tenebrisnox,

It’s not even “higher quality”. This profiteering is forcing British families into severe hardship. We have something like 2 million children living in poverty. All while some foreign corporation is ringing the cash registers.

tenebrisnox,

It’s not astonishing, it’s calculated. Listen to the media when doctors ask for a pay rise. They’re told they’re being greedy and that it’s “not reasonable” to ask for £20 an hour.

Meanwhile the billionaires think that it IS reasonable to put up energy bills 200%+ and increase food prices beyond anything seen in previous generations.

tenebrisnox,

I’ve not ever seen Lucas refer to Valérian et Laureline when talking about inspirations for Star Wars but have read the first 10 or so which were enjoyable. There’s a (terrible) animated series from the 1980s (I think) that used to be on YouTube. I really liked the movie and it’s a shame it didn’t do well enough to enable more.

  • tenebrisnox,

My brother lives on a quiet road in a terraced house and runs the cable to his car. He has a Citroen Ami which might not actually count as a real car.

I know nothing about cars and naïvely thought that you could just lift the battery out and take it into your house to charge.
