@nyrath @iamgerardthomas There's definitely a really big hump to get over with Blender. Compared to a lot of other design programmes, it seems very unintuitive at first. Once that bridge is crossed though, the basics come pretty fast.

Might be making a rod for my own back here, but I think the next thing I try to build in Blender, might be a Star Wars spaceship dock - like Docking Bay 94 from ANH. Or Peli Motto's Hangar 3-5 from The Mandalorian.

I will, of course, have to design a SW ship to go in it.

Sketch to the basic model…

Work in progress. A blender model of a Star Wars style hangar bay - like a bundt cake, with a big wedge cut out. A figure in the foreground shows scale. A couple of Star Wars style random bits of tech have been modelled so far. At the back of the hangar a kind of control room has appeared.

A couple of reasons I started to try and learn Blender (again)…

I thought not being able to draw my ships in 3 dimensions, was really holding me back. Building simple models to help this seemed like a good idea.

A lot of my clients pass my drawings on to 3D artists to model. So there's a possibility of tapping in to that and providing clients with models directly.

The thing is, I don't really know what my options are. I'm so new to this, and haven't been involved in 3D stuff before.

I guess I need to work out what the options are. What routes I could take. What to concentrate on.

Some of that is practical - and some of it is simply working out what I enjoy, and seeing how I can create stuff with a 'thisnorthernboy' feel to it.

Very quickly, I realised that I enjoyed the process of creating ships in 3D, and lighting them to give a realistic look, was REALLY enjoyable.

So maybe it's not just a means to an end.

When I started messing around in Blender, I never thought, for one second, I'd get to the point where I was taking time to model a latch mechanism on a hatch on a spaceship.

Just followed a YouTube tutorial on how to create a slightly knackered, dirty, glass texture in Blender.

Looks fine. Absolutely no idea how or why. It's not really a tutorial if its just "…add a colour ramp, no add a mixer, now add a light path…".

Now turning things off and on, to figure out 'why' it worked.
