Art not as something to be enjoyed, but as a status symbol. The “best” art. The most expensive art. Look at this art I own. Does that not make me important?

timClicks,
@timClicks@mastodon.nz avatar

@yosh Accurate but not actually a big deal in my opinion. People that buy art for prestige kind of live in a parallel sphere from those who buy art for the art itself.

Do I know anyone else who does this before recycling their tin cans?

timClicks,
@timClicks@mastodon.nz avatar

@Fishrock That makes sense. I wasn't sure how clean things need to be for the smelting process to work. Too much paper and food would presumably introduce more carbon into the recycled metal.

My talk from Rust Nation UK is up! Check it out if you've ever wanted someone to demystify unsafe. https://youtu.be/mdaWeql7C3k?si=Ob6LZ7GPIsg60bUD

I spent some time implementing the three bodies simulation in Macroquad and put up a web demo: https://github.com/ollej/macroquad-three-bodies/

It’s based on the video from @timClicks

timClicks,

@ollej Amazing! Do you mind if I add a link to your implementation to the project's repository?

The First Problem Problem is the phenomenon where a disproportionate amount of effort goes into solving the very first problem in a workflow.

E.g. in data as a platform you can connect to a bajillion different data sources and write queries with a ‘low code’ tool. Great that gets you the data. Problem 1. But the very next thing is like how can I ensure we’re all using the same query to do that aka centralisation, version control etc and you fall off a cliff.

timClicks,

@milesmcbain Or facilitating issue reporting. Your flakey dashboard is now where users go and they want to contact someone about the missing figures

I should probably look into translating an exported copy of my Wordpress blog into a decent static site generator’s input - for when Wordpress inevitably enshittifies or starts inserting Trump ads in page views.

timClicks,
@timClicks@mastodon.nz avatar

@M0CUV I feel the same way about my blog. I started it on Tumblr a long time ago, and it's also owned by Automattic these days.

The coolest thing about Rust Nation UK 2024 confirmed all my worst fears about software supply chain security (and then xz made things worse) https://tim.mcnamara.nz/post/746402277639782400/supply-chain

@carol I don't have anywhere near a perfect answer, but I would like crates.io to include the ability to hold back from distributing releases until some external checks have taken place.

For highly significant crates, this would provide an avenue for external auditing to take place

timClicks,
@timClicks@mastodon.nz avatar

@a @carol I have ideas and formative plans to address the resourcing component.

For those of you who have upgraded from FORTRAN 77, why? Seems risky to me. We should probably give newer versions some time to mature imo.
