    I wrote a bit of a rant, in light of the news today we're going to have all of 4(!) trains a day Figueres-Perpignan from later this summer

    We need A LOT MORE THAN THIS!

    @jon @Martinned Except for the bit between Neustadt and Kaiserslautern, 90 km/h for a large part. (But not sure how significant that is.)

    Ha, in Norwegian a complicated interchange (or grade-separated junction in British) is a trafikkmaskin. Literally Traffic Machine.
    Alternatives spaghettikryss or veispaghetti; spaghetti crossing or road spaghetti!

    I’m steadily trying different beers I can find in local supermarkets here in Bourgogne and it’s frustrating

    There’s a large number of beers in an Auchan, Intermarché or E.Leclerc, but either you go for very expensive craft beer (>€3 for 33cl) or end up with something like this La Goudale mid-range from breweries in Nord or Pas de Calais that add sugar to get a second fermentation - so the beers have a sort of sweet-bitter strong taste that I don’t find pleasant

    tml,
    @tml@urbanists.social avatar

    @jon What about non-alcoholic ones? Some are quite good. And then some shots if you are after the alcohol effect;)

    Like really, what the hell were they smoking at LeoExpress?

    A proposal for Bratislava - Ostend, in the daytime

    Like this is even more off the scale than Andi Scheuer's TEE 2.0 plans

    There is not a hope in hell that would work operationally, or even in business terms. Because it'd rack up such a delay so as to be unuseable

    tml,
    @tml@urbanists.social avatar

    @jon Not through Vienna, wouldn’t that be natural? Or wait, I guess Vienna and Bratislava aren’t actually as close as I always think they are… not like, say, Copenhagen and Malmö?

    tml,
    @tml@urbanists.social avatar

    @smveerman @jon Oh, nice, didn’t know. Has that service survived since the days when several international long-distance service had Oostende as an endpoint, or has it been restarted later?

    tml,
    @tml@urbanists.social avatar

    @jon I guess they expect most passengers to go to/from Brussels, and then looked for some other place to do the overnight storage and service of the train? Ostend is a bit far away for just that, though, isn’t it? Or is it an intentionally fake idea and they throw in Ostend just for nostalgic lols?

    Ah, it’s lovely to be in France again. At first when I went out from the hotel in Belfort last night I was a bit disappointed but then I found the “better” part of town and it was nice. Good views from the fortification at sunset. Still here now, the trains to Mulhouse run less frequently on a Saturday. Pondering whether I should bother with the railway museum after all. Maybe I should just do a small random tour with TER trains instead?

    Which of the three railway lines between Florence and Bologna might be the most interesting?

    tml,
    @tml@urbanists.social avatar

    @jon @partim But it was a but of a disappointment to me, frankly, when I did it last year. Sure, mountains, bridges, and tunnels. But I was expecting a real “wow” experience.

    Do I misremember, or is Culmont-Chalindrey famous in rail fan circles for being a large and (formerly?) important junction even if in the middle of roughly nowhere? The track on the long curved viaduct was impressive. @jon @partim

    What a pleasant way to travel. In almost empty 1st class in a nice fresh long-distance TER on a well-maintained gently curving track through slightly hilly rural landscapes. Between Lure and Vesoul, going from Belfort to Paris.

    Did not take a TGV because 1) I would have needed to first take a bus to the separate TGV station outside town, 2) I would have had to buy a reservation for 10€ or likely 20€, and 3) it would have been more packed. Not worth it just to win a few hours.

    @hbons I bought a three-month Interrail pass at the 50% off anniversary sale last year, and using it now, which coincidentally and conveniently is also when I am switching into retirement mode.

    tml,
    @tml@urbanists.social avatar

    @jon The area around the station was meh but the centre, a ten minute walk away, was pleasant. A river and two major squares, one of which is being turned into a park. No large parks in the centre otherwise. Several popular (on weekends at least) restaurants with large outdoor seating areas at the other square. Large 1600/1700 era fortifications on a hill just by the old town.

    I’d say it’s not necessarily worth visiting for itself, but as a base for day trips in the area, sure.

    What a lovely small new urban garden by the Gare de l’Est. Jardin Marielle Franco. Has been built very recently in an otherwise unused area (instead of parking spots, haha). Apparently part of a larger long-term project. Thanks Anne Hidalgo 💚 https://www.paris.fr/lieux/jardin-marielle-franco-19534 https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jardin_Marielle-Franco

    First time I have been in a train between Stockholm and Malmö (or vice versa, as today) that is this empty. At least in 1st class. No people traveling for work on the day before Midsummer Eve? (Which is always celebrated on a Friday here, as in Finland.)

    @tml@urbanists.social avatar

    You often read claims like “in high-speed trains you don’t see anything, they run in tunnels or behind noise abatement walls”. But at least for the LGV Est that is not the case. I haven’t noticed any significant tunnels yet, and you see the landscape with gently rolling hills just fine.

    (Taking the TGV from Paris to Frankfurt, on a three-month I think I can spend on an expensive reservation this once… I did take a TER from Belfort to Paris.)

    tml, to random
    @tml@urbanists.social avatar

    That is not possible. Irritating inconsistencies and minor errors can spoil your impression of a non-fiction book.

    Quite remarkable that this TGV power car, the one that did the 515.3 km/h speed record in 1990, has a very standard and plain hook for coupling the rest of the train at the end.

    tml,
    @tml@urbanists.social avatar

    @partim @PGLux @jon Presumably the two halves of a Eurostar (that has to be able to be split i two in emergencies) are coupled using Scharffenberg couplers, too?

    tml,
    @tml@urbanists.social avatar

    @partim @jon Now that you say it, indeed. No need to over-engineer it.
