The Grauniad have a column today https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/may/13/tv-episode-black-britain-gay-history about the difficulties of finding really quite recent programmes in the messy Channel 4 archives.

That's been our writers' experience too, as reported for us in April https://transdiffusion.org/2023/04/14/whatever-happened-to-the-channel-4-archive/

Can we find the tape we had in our hands yesterday and desperately need today? Can we buffalo.

But we can find this still-wrapped suite of productivity software for our ZX81 (last used in May 1982), so there’s that.

Tom Baker is 90 today!

Kif was in London in the 80s recording station announcements for British Rail. In the next booth doing ad voiceovers is Tom Baker.

Tea break:

Tom: DO YOU BUY ANY OF THE THINGS I ADVERTISE, YOUNG SIR?

Kif: Er, no, not really.

Tom: GOOD, THEY'RE ALL RUBBISH, YOU KNOW.

@KecskeBak Jackanory: the BBC had got Caroline Benn, teacher and coincidentally wife of the PMG, in to read a story. A letter to The Stage published on 26 May 1966:

transdiffusion,
@transdiffusion@tbs.social avatar

@Sloanysoft @KecskeBak It's been interesting to see how the level of information provided by newspapers on their correspondents has decreased over time. In the 1960s it was normal to print a full name and address so that other people could reply directly. By the 1980s it was a name and town. By the 2000s, just a name. Now it's often a handle or even a "name withheld". We can surmise a lot about the development of quality of discourse on controversial matters over this time.

transdiffusion,
@transdiffusion@tbs.social avatar

@Sloanysoft @KecskeBak Also, local (and sometimes national!) newspaper articles about celebrities well into the 1960s would often say in passing "ATV announcer Mrs Famous-Woman, of 33 Acacia Grove in Walsall, is now appearing in Emergency - Ward 10 as well as Crossroads" and the like, and then add, randomly, "Mrs Famous-Woman shops at the Finefare in Brownhills and visits her sister in Cheesemonger Road, Fullbrook, every Wednesday" and, nowadays, that's all terrifying.
