Finding a few old contacts from The Other Sites, even now that I've been On Here for most of a year

And really wishing there was a way to request your local mastodon instance to backfill a new contact's posts

It wouldn't even have to be immediate. It could go into a low priority queue and get throttled by volume, but it would be nice to know that i could have the last, say,100 posts from my new acquaintance/friend from another instance synced to MY instance over the next 24 hours

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@soypunk yeah no regrets here either -- just wishing it was easier to sync recent history across smaller instances on good terms

These cubes aren’t moving or changing (as implied by the arrows). At all. Not even a little. Other than the color toggle, they remain constant.

Riot cops are like guns in that once you whip them out, they're pretty likely to get used.

@FeralRobots following the gun safety rules is probably wise for cops, too, though.

Don't {call the cops on, point a gun at} someone you're not prepared to shoot.

(calling the fuzz is 100% a muzzle-sweep safety mistake)

The most foolish, useless hill I am willing to die on:

“Login” is a noun, “log in” is a verb, button labels are verbs or verb phrases, and thus every button-like affordance that’s labeled “Login” is wrong

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@shantini

I have similar intuitions that I derive from analogy with "mixin" (noun) vs "mix in" (verb)

but I am not sure that this is the same kind of "in" particle

@inthehands

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@inthehands

log-on is not a noun, unless it's maybe a description of the screechy sound of a 90s dial-up connecting

Sorry @merriamwebster you also got the frequencies wrong; a "log-in" is (marginally, tho better w/o hyphen) acceptable as a version of "handle", "identifier" . a "log-on" or "logon" is ... weird to this late Gen-X anglophone USian Old Internet User.

Who's done the clearest and friendliest medium-length explanation of how LLM-ing search is going to destroy the human incentives to publish knowledge and analysis? I'm sure there are many, and I don't want to rewrite the wheel.

(And every time I allude to this future, I get people who are totally baffled by the idea of LLMs as extractive and enclosing, so it's not something that goes without saying.)

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@kissane i don't know if it's a medium length, nor exactly "friendly", but @emilymbender has written more than one post on why LLMs are broken-as-designed WRT search.

Not so directly on the "this will duck up the commons" though

@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@kissane

Maybe @baldur 's sections on Plagiarism https://needtoknow.fyi/card/plagiarism/
or Poisoning https://needtoknow.fyi/card/poisoning/ ??

but you're more interested in "reverse poisoning"; i.e. contaminating the well of the useful information-commons (rather than "poisoning" the AI)

We need a federal commission to regulate the existential risk posed by Space Murder Boltzmann Hornets

I've done the math, and they pose a serious threat to the ability of humanity to make it to the Rapture

Not surprising that today's New York Times article about the singularity launders bullshit for big tech with just enough skepticism for plausible deniability.

More impressive: the article quotes 15 different people.

Sundar Pichai
Reid Hoffman
Bill Gates
Elon Musk
Sam Altman
Baldur Bjarnason
John von Neumann
Irving John Good
Hans Moravec
Ray Kurzweil
Rodney Brooks
Jerry Kaplan
Ryan Schaeffer
Eric Schmidt
Charlies Stross

Yes, every single one of them is a man.

Here is a remarkable video of two young men exploring an abandoned mall in Cleveland, Ohio during a snowstorm.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adO20xFdowM

A lot of surprisingly young people are obsessed with what they call "Liminal Spaces" and the related horror genre known as "Backrooms"-- Videos like this put this in context, a nightmare from the collective unconscious of a generation: infinite, but abandoned indoor space, wandering the unimpressive, but at times nostalgic, ruins of a suburban dream.

That is from THE TRANSFORMERS (1984) and this thought process is explicit in the comics as a motivation for why the alien robots can look like earth motor vehicles

Sometimes I think that the legend-level "adventure bro" franchises all need to follow the 007 model and simply recast without bothering to explain

Then i think, no, they should go with DOCTOR WHO "Regeneration" plot logic

Or maybe the Star Trek "reboot and branch timelines" logic

But now I want a full rescue reboot, where Indiana is a(n indigenous) woman's name, but she's still a professor who fights Nazis with a bullwhip
