#CovidCautious community, I’m tabling at an academic conference next month to spread awareness of both the Public Health Pledge (@phpledge) and #COVID19 precautions as paths toward inclusivity, and I’m trying to think of what would make this table both useful and appealing to passersby. Does anyone have suggestions on what else I can do, in terms of signage, giveaways, activities, etc.?

I’m currently planning to include printed copies of Hazel Newlevant’s 2024 COVID-19 zine (https://newlevant.com/COVIDzine) as well as materials on reducing transmission from https://bit.ly/lesscovid, but I know that good information alone will be not be enough to draw people in.

Context: This is a small organization that holds one to two mini-conferences per year inside larger conferences. Last year, I asked the organization’s all-volunteer officers if they were familiar with the Public Health Pledge (@phpledge) and what we could do to be in line with it, after which they created the Public Health Officer position for me. For various life reasons, the most concrete thing I came up with for next month is tabling.

Just a reminder that it should not be normal in America in 2024 for people to be dying at 77.

Op-ed from Eric Topol (@erictopol):

"With all three respiratory viruses circulating at full force, you would think we’d be seeing people wearing masks everywhere in public. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The state of denialism and general refusal to take simple steps to reduce the risk of infection can be seen everywhere."

I'm a little baffled by today's essay by YLE, which seems to support the (I thought discredited?) idea of immunity debt and seems to argue against being immuno-compromising. @augieray and others, any thoughts? Was I just under-caffeinated when I read it in the wee hours this morning?

What does a world look like where we let rip through the population repeatedly on an annual basis? Where people allow themselves to be infected time and again with a disease that causes chronic damage to our bodies? We don't know, but this is precisely what it COULD look like 🧵 :

@augieray My mom was diagnosed with aggressive metastatic cancer a few months after having COVID. It certainly seems likely to me that COVID supercharged the cancer cells--I theorize that the cancer was already there but sped up and spread out because of COVID.

Me in social media: “Here is the data that tells us risks are rising. And here are the studies that show COVID can damage your chronic health. Please be careful.”

My friends: “Here's a photo of me in a crowded restaurant, then attending a crowded concert, then going to a conference, and finally getting to get together with my family including my aging, immunocompromised parents.”

Why do I bother? What good is monitoring, knowledge, and data if everyone's just going to ignore it?

@augieray So relatable. But also, there are plenty of us out there who really appreciate your monitoring and are also exercising tremendous caution informed by the data you provide -- you're not alone, and you make us feel not alone, and you're really helping. Thank you. 🥰

gotta love an elected official justifying his own bigotry by being like it's ok, i was just among my cop friends

"Sawyer said he has developed a sense of humor “that some cops have” and that he got caught up in a website where crass comments are common."

@seachanger ugh. Disgusting. Good job on OPB for reporting on it.

Had my first, "Are you a burglar? Why are you still wearing a mask?" experience today at a small local shop. Rite of passage, maybe? 😷 It has me wishing I could organize my rural, libertarian community by invoking the failures of both mainstream media and government when it comes to pandemic protections...
