Had lunch with a peer in a restaurant today. I brought my CO2 monitor, and as I am wont to do, I felt the need to explain and be a bit apologetic, since most people find it weird. Turns out his spouse has had Long COVID for a year, so he was both supportive and fascinated. In the half-empty restaurant, CO2 climbed from 600 to almost 900 by the time I left. I thought this might be a safer place, but perhaps not. (This is why I bought the CO2 monitor in the first place--to find safer options.)

@harold I did not. I know some swear by them, but in a big open restaurant, I'm not sure how much they'd help. Plus, COVID infections seem to be about as low as they've been in four years right now, so I am taking a little more risk. (Still avoiding crowded places--I lunched at 11:30 to be out of the place before it got crowded.)

New STUDY explores microstructural properties of white matter in those infected with #COVID19. "Although there were significant differences between healthy controls and infected groups, we found no significant differences between hospitalized and non-hospitalized COVID patients. Notably, the identified tracts are part of the limbic system and orbitofrontal cortex, indicating microstructural differences in neural circuits associated with memory and emotion."

My new post on LinkedIn about a court case. An appellate court in Colorado found that COVID can be occupational disease that is compensable under the state's Workers Comp laws. The employer and its insurance company appealed the judgement and lost. This is a reminder that employers may urge you to take risks, but they may not stand behind you if you get ill. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/augieray_covid-19-can-be-occupational-disease-colorado-activity-7194390536126885890-4VF9?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

@justyourluck @jeffcliff I'm sorry, but what is the problem with clicking a link to visit LinkedIn? I post about COVID as an economic and professional issue there since that is a way to change the way people think about COVID-19 as an workplace, career and employment issue.

@carstenfranke @justyourluck @jeffcliff Sorry, I thought LinkedIn post were freely available. That said, I'll still post there to try to reach business leaders with messaging about COVID-19 in the workplace.

My latest post on LinkedIn about the savings to both costs and lives if hospitals did the least little bit to prevent nosocomial #COVID19 infections. Patient testing and staff masking were associated with savings in costs and lives, per a new STUDY. My post:

A couple weeks ago, I noted that new variants are rising, and we might expect a modest uptick in COVID infections before summer. Biobot just noted a small rise in COVID in wastewater for the first time since December, driven entirely by the Northeast region. It might simply be a leveling off, or it could be a sign that infections are about to rise. I still don't expect a significant surge, but time will tell. https://biobot.io/data/

I upset a few people with a post earlier today, so here is a place where you can get a random compliment. Enjoy.

Some people literally cannot see beyond their own anger. I understand being angry at Biden for his begrudging support of Netanyahu. I even agree with that anger. But being so angry that you are willing to help the guy Netanyahu wants to win is really something. Netanyahu hates how Biden is trying to limit his war in Gaza, while Trump would be more than happy to triple it. There is one path to protecting lives in Gaza, and it is not helping Trump win.

@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

If you are so angry at Biden over Gaza and Israel that you think abstaining and helping Trump win is the right thing to do, ask yourself some simple questions:

  • Who does Netanyahu want to win the US election?
    -Why does he want Trump to win the election?
  • Will Palestinians be safer with Trump or Biden in office?
  • And finally, will people of color, women, the LGBTQ community, democrats, journalists, poor people in need of healthcare, and others be safer with Biden or Trump in office?

"I'm so angry at Biden over Isreal/Gaza that I'm going to help Trump destroy democracy, weaponize the Justice system, send millions to deportation camps, lower the taxes on the wealthy and shift the burden to the middle class, cut Social Security, track and prosecute women having abortions, pardon the people who violently attacked Capitol police, dismantle NATO, help Russia, AND ON TOP OF ALL THAT do even more harm to Palestinians" is a take--it's just a really awful take, IMO.

@FLGLchicago @evan Well, this place needs people like you and me to speak sense. I hope you stay.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@seb321 @evan If it was a choice between one man who CLEARLY is doing his best to limit the violence while balancing sensitive political demands versus the man who thinks bombing people of color and Muslims is the answer, then yes, I'd vote the first guy. That's because I'm a mature voter who recognizes the way the world works and knows that I pick the candidate who is best, not the one who is perfect.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@ike_seblon A serious, mature voter wouldn't be worried about blame but impact. You can help Biden or you can help Trump. You can blame whomever you want for your decision, but the decision is still your own. You can watch the world burn and think "Thank God I didn't vote for the other guy." That is entirely your choice; I just think it's a pretty uncaring one.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@ike_seblon I agree. Based on our posts, I care about everyone, but you're willing to allow most to suffer so you can feel good about your vote (or lack thereof) even though Trump would do even more to hurt the people you claim to care about. Seems a pretty obvious choice to me based on your own logic.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@kzodasnowman I care about everyone. Anyone who does will vote for Biden. Abstaining or voting for Trump will hurt most, in particular, the people in Gaza, which Trump would sooner bomb himself than help. My care is very evident. Where's yours?

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@irfan Speaking of privilege--I can't imagine a person who thinks they will do good for the world helping Trump win. Man, that is the mark of true privilege right there!

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@irfan Speaking of privilege--ageism?! Blocked!

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@kzodasnowman

  1. What happens to Biden's support if he is seen abandoning Israel?
  2. Who does Netenyaho want to win (and why is it Trump)?
  3. If you care about children not being murdered what about gun violence? or immigrant kids? Or trans kids?

You are simplifying something complex to make yourself feel better. You are not interpreting the situation to make a valid decision that will help the world AND improve the situation in Gaza, IMO.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@ZillaMon You reacted without reading what I wrote. Netanyahu wants Trump to win. Why do you think that is? If you really cared about people in Gaza, you'd vote for Biden and not the guy who wants to bomb people of color who are Muslims around the world. One of us is callous. It is not me.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@evan Thanks. I'd suggest you stop worrying so much about "blame" and instead worry about how to make the entire world--including Gaza--safer. The way to do so is NOT to help the guy Netanyahu wants to win.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@evan So you want to help the guy who actively supports genocide instead of the guy who is working to limit the war in Gaza? Make that make sense.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@evan @Amoshias And there will be more war if Trump is elected.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@seb321 @evan I said people who think like that have a bad take. I did not criticize them. I'm focused on the ideas and outcomes, not on criticizing people.

If I were to say the people who care about reproductive rights shouldn't avoid voting for Biden just because he has failed to get those rights passed into law, would that be criticizing people, or would that be addressing an illogical assessment?

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@Tattered Enjoy Trump's second term. You'll have plenty of time to consider how Biden was a flawed man dealing with complex and subtle political issues, and all you could do was simplify it into "Biden is immoral." Once Trump drops a few dozen bombs on Gaza (not to mention hunts down women who got abortions, jails a few journalists and bans healthcare for trans people), you'll wish for Biden and his efforts to limit the violence in Gaza.
