I just saw a picture of an optical illusion posted with an alt text of "if you can't see, this one isn't going to be fun, I'm sorry".

And they're right, technically.

But also, the text in the post did not mention that it was an optical illusion at all.

So, you're letting vision-impaired people know that they're missing out, but you're not even telling them what it is they're missing.

Also, you could totally describe how the illusion looks and what it's doing.

@scy It feels so weird how many people have fundamental problems with simply describing an image? Sometimes makes me wonder if I just have a brain where that connection is unusually strong ???

Just think what you’d want to know if you couldn't look at the image? "Optical illusion where a picture could be a white vase on black ground, or two black faces on white ground, with the "vase" being the gap between them”. Yes, white doesn't mean much to them, but still means “different texture" or so.

Idly wondering on the walk home:

What are the best Linux laptops these days? All hardware supported, great battery time (~10 hrs), 14” 1080p, great trackpad, USB-C Power delivery support?

And is there a machine like that with a gaming GPU that’ll run current games at normal or better (for dual-booting Windows, I know WINE/Proton exists, it’s not enough for me).

The great thing about single sign on is that if I log on to YouTube Premium on a machine I barely trust, so that I can see silly videos without commercials, that machine now also has access to years and years of email correspondence, location history, and photos 👍👍

@scy Also, if Apple decides that my son buying apps on my phone seems fraudulent and blocks my iTunes account, all my apps in the app store that pay my rent get banned too.

@bgannin @appleinsider Most studios aren’t that intrusive, I get that he'd be surprised. But yeah, we Apple observers are familiar with how they treat everyone, and if he’d paid any attention to who he got in bed with, he would have known that. Maybe the money was just too good.

So many of the “fully automated solutions" of our time turn out to be Mechanical Turks:

From the apps that recognize objects for you, to Amazon’s “fully automated stores”, to the “factories” of the clothes industry that just perform simple preparatory tasks before the garments are handed on to rows and rows of underpaid tailors.

I guess this one was “Amazon Mechanical Turk: Variant B”.

@eniko Not contradicting you, but FWIW, I had that problem with many games, worst being WoW … they kept hiding important directions about game mechanics in pages of lore in a tiny scrolling window that was impossible to make larger and written in a near-unreadable script font.

So in the end I kept just ignoring the lore and going by the mission objectives.

It was either that or stop playing completely. Games need to focus more on usability/readability, and also of allowing users to scan text.

's "Detroit People Mover" is such a good song. It demonstrates that electronic synth music can convey feelings other than "party", that it can deeply move people. Even without any lyrics.

Also, I need to get some presets like these. I really enjoy the rich, buzzing, sonorous sounds. That short, repeated melody (e.g. at 1:42) that could very well serve as a PA announcement chime in an empty airport.

@scy Wenn ich solche Bilder sehe, frage ich mich immer: Covid Lockdown? 5 Uhr morgens bevor irgendwer unterwegs ist? Autofreier Sonntag? Speziell für das Filmen gemietetes Fahrzeug/gesperrte Straße? ... ?

Ich frag mich wie viele Covid-Zeit-Aufnahmen in Zombie-Filmen etc. als Archivaufnahmen enden werden.

Das hier hat jedenfalls starke “28 days later” Stimmung.

@davemark One of our profs still used that image, calling it “the well-known image Linna” … so creepy to have someone so obviously want people to be aware of his seedy opinions without saying anything obvious about it. He NEVER said anything about other test images.

Oder ist das nur, dass Leute sich nicht über doppelte Logs beschweren, wenn sie die in Display-Zeit rausschreiben?

I hate how some users in your @SlackHQ DM’s fall off the list if they’ve not been active for a period of time. I wish you could get info on a person and add a pref so that they ALWAYS displayed in the list no matter what. I constant have to search for a user that’s disappeared and manually re-add them to the main DM list. Super annoying.

@gedeonm @SlackHQ You can favorite users in the regular list, just as you can channels. Not sure if that works in the DMs tab, but if you have room in the channels tab, it makes no difference.
