@dave That "run the visuals for your show" tagline in Waiting for Review 4x12 is great!

One of my pet peeves is when devs just post "I just released Frobozz 2.0" on socials and I may be on the road and have to decide then and there whether to make the effort to note this down.

If they just added a tagline like this to any mention of their product, I'd immediately know whether it's US tax software I don't need, or DJing software I could use for the next party. I'd never miss a good one.

    Why do modern devices refuse to even start up when plugged into power until you’ve charged them to like, 20% ?

    Can't you just trust that I won't pull the power cable and let me start using it?

    Fun Fact: “donation" is a specific legal term that is protected in many countries. Many people colloquially call any amount of money that you get without having to do something specific in return a “donation”. If you do that in public (e.g. on web sites or broadcast video like Twitch or YouTube) you get in trouble in most countries, because you must be an accredited charitable organization to be allowed to ask for donations.

    You may, however, solicit tips in many places.

    Trying out Sublime Text because everyone says it's so great, and because we have a tmLanguage for one of our file formats.

    Why isn’t “Incremental Find” the default? Why is there a separate non-incremental find? Every app on MacOS highlights upcoming search results. I'd understand the reverse, for people with huge files, if this was a performance issue. But why make the default the non-Mac behavior?

Tipps? :BoostOK:

    Help me brainstorm:
    Outside of vocabulary lists, what kind of list would be fun to learn in Study Snacks?

    Things on my list are:

    • Countries & national dishes
    • Moons & planets
    • Inventors & inventions
    • Greek Gods & their domain
    • Movies & directors

    What else?

    uliwitness,
    @uliwitness@chaos.social avatar

    @klemensstrasser Would a picture dictionary work? I always loved learning what bits of everyday items that you usually don't use the name for are actually called. Like, the different parts of a zipper, the separating bit on a bottle cap, the part that goes "click” on the cap of a glass, that sort of thing.

    @loadingartist Amazon gonna Amazon: They combine pages for (what they think is) the same product, and the cheapest one (that makes Amazon the most money) shows up as the default purchase. So the Amazon page's author and the store you buy through isn’t necessarily the same. (It’s part of something called "Amazon Marketplace”)

    Gib es hier sowas wie... Bodenreinigungsspezialisten?

    Es gibt doch diese kombinierten Wisch-Staubsauger. Also so Teile, die vorne einer Buerste und allerlei Geloet haben, den Boden nass machen und die Ploerre dann wieder aufsaugen.

    Kann mir jemand vielleicht eine Marke/ein Modell empfehlen? Und wenn ja, warum?

    People who primarily interact with Git using its command line like the past 50 years of evolution in personal computers never happened fascinate me.

    I wonder if the kind of people who complain about people looking too much at their phones would complain less if it was more visible what you're doing. Smart phones have basically compressed a whole bunch of big gestures telling everyone what's up into pulling out and using one's phone for 30 seconds.

    • Pulling out a map
    • Pulling out a travel guide/dictionary
    • Openly or covertly glancing at your watch
    • Pre-counting some amount of money
    • Pulling out your tickets and keeping them in hand
    uliwitness,
    @uliwitness@chaos.social avatar
    • Pulling out a slip of paper to add something to your shopping list
    • Noting down what the person you're talking to is telling you
    • Glancing at the family photo in your wallet
    • Checking for your next appointment in your Planner
    • Making a phone call with your voice (it's now a text message)

    So many formerly disparate things, and a bunch of things you wouldn’t have noticed before, now all look the same. They now look like a single gesture that is done disproportionately often.

    I need 'git commit --llm' that would ask me a bunch of questions and then write a commit message for me based on my explanations.

    Like, I fixed this complicated issue, and even though the patch itself is quite small, it takes 6 paragraphs of prose to explain what the issue even was and how it could happen.

    uliwitness,
    @uliwitness@chaos.social avatar

    @bugaevc You write this in the commit message? I've realized that commit messages get lost too easily (someone reformats the code, or wraps it in an "if”, and suddenly you'd have to explicitly go back past what "Authors" shows, to find this info), so I usually make things that are longer explanations comments next to the code.

    What's different in your workflow?
