Viel Kultur, viel Musik, viel Abwechslung, herzliche Menschen. Allerdings schon recht Weinlastig, die Gegend.

Around the turn of the millennium. Games were designed for offline use and had way more immersive campaigns, were shipped by and large ready and bug-free, and so were add-on campaigns.

And since graphics were not as refined as they are now, additional efforts were placed on gameplay.

My top list (by release year):

  • Diablo II (1996)
  • Dungeon Keeper (1997)
  • Half-Life (1998)
  • Thief: The Dark Project (1998)
  • Thief 2 (1999)
  • Dungeon Keeper 2 (1999)
  • Heroes of Might & Magic 3 (1999)
  • Gothic II (2002)

Never had a console and don’t get along with controllers whatsoever, so those are all referring to the PC versions.

For Thief and Gothic II there are unofficial graphic mods out there that improve things massively. They basically replace the original models with those from Thief II and Gothic 3, and also fix some bugs.

www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152429 - that’s a user made campaign for Thief, the thread also has links to all the patches and updates. The campaign is also absolutely great with overwhelmingly massive maps, but you should play the original first.

I’ve recently replayed Thief and Thief 2, they still hold up well!

Tried Gothic II, and unfortunately the controls feel very clunky today. Or maybe it’s just me. But somehow third person view doesn’t really work for me anymore.

Should I keep paying for Proton?

I moved over to Proton from Google because I liked the idea of having an alias for each service. After two months and a Mail Plus trial, I now pay for Proton Unlimited. I use Mail (due to alias linking), Calendar, and Pass often. I don’t really use VPN that much (although it is useful sometimes), and Drive is just too slow. I...

Why not use Firefox Relay? It’s a mail forwarding service with 5 aliases in the free version, and unlimited in paid. I’m using that in combination with my gmail account and it works beautifully.

If you only occasionally need a vpn, the free tier in proton is probably sufficient (but you can’t select servers, they will be assigned at random), and you could use windscribe as a backup (you can select servers in the free tier yourself, but traffic is limited to 10GB per 30 days).

The trick to fried juicy chicken is tapioca flour. Chicken itself doesn’t need much time to be cooked through, but a regular batter of flour coating takes forever to get nice and crunchy. By the time you get it right, the meat is overcooked.

Tapioca (or cornstarch, if you must) gets a really nice color and crunch in no time, so you can just eyeball it and it’s gonna be good.

I’ve blocked 10 or so instances and over 500 individual communities. Mostly by browsing /new and just killing anything I don’t have the slightest interest in.

The instances I’ve blocked are leftist, furry, porn and anime related, plus one that’s hosting sports communities exclusively.

Would have to be fairly frequently updated and constantly monitored.

Hexbear and lemmy.ml?

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I’m using USB-C to 3.5" adapters, they cost next to nothing and allow me to use a much wider pool of phones. Some even come with a USB-C passthrough so you can charge it or connect other stuff simultaneously.

The active user tracker is quite inaccurate as it’s not fully indexing all servers. Plus you never know if a decline is not merely a sign that the anti-spambot measures are taking hold.

New releases have always been slow since there are more fundamental changes being done for the time being. Once everything works well under the hood, I’m sure the releases will be pouring in faster when it’s only cosmetically things that are being addressed, where not much testing is needed.

As far as hating the community goes - please name one social media platform that’s universally loved.

Lemmy isn’t perfect, but it’s not as toxic and bot infected as reddit nowadays. There are 3 major toxic instances (lemmygrad.org, lemmy.ml, hexbear.net), blocking those will improve your experience on the platform massively. (Unfortunately .ml still has some of the large communities without decently sized alternatives elsewhere, so maybe you’re better off blocking individual communities rather than the whole instance).

As far as receiving comments and upvotes is concerned - are you sure it’s actual people and not bots?

The article says that you need a custom launcher to establish a connection to their cloud service, so the apk only won’t do it either way. But give it a few days and someone will have rigged up a full package, no doubt. Then you’ve probably got 6-8 weeks to use the service before they kick the bucket and shut down forever…

@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I’m more curious if it’s a to-do or have-done list.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I read the auto-summary, which didn’t mention it. Guess the bot isn’t perfect.

I try not to visit websites that have 100+ trackers installed. Naturally I block them, but I don’t even want to give them the traffic.

Yeah same. Discord, gmail and whatsapp web, plus whichever ones I’m actively using. And those will be closed by end of day at the very latest.

Star Wars – The Phantom Menace: still terrible after all these years? (www.theguardian.com)

Can it really be that there are Star Wars fans who see George Lucas’s Episode I – The Phantom Menace, once considered the emblem of everything that went wrong with the long-running space saga, as a bona fide classic ripe for rehabilitation 25 years on? As the much-derided 1999 film returns to cinemas this weekend, there are...

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

It’s ripe for a remake maybe. Without the lizard clown and the whole podracing quest line, it made for an alright short film that could be extended to a feature length movie.

Where can I find obscure cnn video?

The video is an old one about Katrina. I need it for homework. I have tried accessing it from CNN’s website but CNN in their infinite wisdom put DRM on the video that is publicly available, and I assume that is why it doesn’t work on mull, librewolf, or chromium (all show same error about neon request failed). I looked on...

Oh please do…

Ah right, that’s understandably a bit troublesome… Then I trust your judgement when it comes to vetting the posts. I’m not going to join facebook to get the first hand experience.

viking,

Sure, but you didn’t go ranting about on facebook. That’s what the OP meant, not that there are genuine investigations resulting in nothing.

@viking@infosec.pub avatar

@viking@infosec.pub avatar

They didn’t bring it to light, it was a user report posted on reddit. They merely investigated it further. Nothing against mullvad, it’s a great vpn, but credit where credit is due.
