Looks like Twitter has removed the endpoint bird.makeup was using to fetch profiles...

I'll do another reverse engineering round to figure out another way

More checkmarks are green today!

vincent, to random

Looks like Twitter has made it so that when you look up a profile without being logged in, you see posts ranked by likes instead of by time. This will be a problemโ€ฆ

New little feature on bird.makeup this weekend: the account page will now display the number of followers a user has, and also in which server that account is the most popular.

Hope this will help users find more niche servers that host the communities they want to be part of! Also if you are on a server like mastodon.social that bans bird.makeup and you want to move, this is now my recommended way to find a new home

Testing QT behavior in apps: in which apps can you see this toot as containing a QT instead of just a link?

Guys I didnโ€™t change anything yet and bird.makeup started working again ๐Ÿคฏ

vincent, to random

So I'm officially starting work to port bird.makeup to other social networks, starting with Instagram. There is some code already written, and the domain is already bought: kilogram.makeup

It will be very bare bone at first, and there will be a list of supported accounts, but as I make it scale those limits will be removed. I also plan to add features that will specifically help , like federating stories.

Deploying new versions of bird.makeup is starting to take a while with so many boxes, I think it's time I move it to a kubernetes cluster

vincent, to random

So I have found ~50% of the new calls I need to make to make bird.makeup reliable again. I am still somewhat expecting Twitter to roll back the changes they made, but if they do not Iโ€™ll start implementing that this week

vincent, to technology

Looks like Lemmy "sub-reddit" are activitypub groups and thus can be followed: @technology

Interesting!

Even though people thought bird.makeup would die this weekend with the login wall, it's actually more popular than ever!

The process I use to get information from Twitter still works but has a 40% percent error rate it seems. It's also much higher for accounts followed for the first time. It's very likely that's it's coming from their internal service being flaky and not actual ban enforcement. I'll see over the week if this improves otherwise I'll start figuring workarounds for those cases.

Proud to introduce my new activitypub project: https://bird.makeup . Do you wish to follow on mastodon some people that are still on the bird site? Now you can! You can even follow the muskrat if you want @elonmusk (but why would you?)

I'm getting a lot of question about what's currently working with bird.makeup, so here it is:

The system is mostly back online, but there are some major limitation when crawling new posts.

  • To be forwarded, a post has to be in the top 100 of an account as measured by likes
  • There are no retweets being forwarded right now

Rates of errors on bird.makeup are still elevated but it seems to be getting better

vincent, to random

Taking a break today of trying to improve bird.makeup because it looks like itโ€™s already working better than Twitter itself

vincent, to random

Looks like Twitter is rejecting many bird.makeup requests today. Expect degraded performance until I figure a workaround

vincent, to random

Currently setting up a mastodon instance and it looks like all requests have a 20 second delay added. It's driving me crazy!

Anyone knows what's up? My google-fu is giving me nothing

vincent, (edited ) to random

Thinking of starting a mastodon instance for myself and for past and current patreon supporter, where I could develop more fediverse projects I want to create.

Is that something that you would be interested in?

(and of course bird.makeup would never get banned on it)

vincent, to random

Many new people on the fediverse this week, and thus many discovering bird.makeup for the first time!

I wrote a thing this week in response to all the questions I got asked, about why (surprisingly) opt-outs would be counter-productive, and other stuff:

Started Silo on Apple TV today and itโ€™s quite good!

One really useful thing Nitter could do is to log the id of new tweets (and their author) as it encounters them during normal operation. Bird.makeup could simply hook into that byproduct and it can already figure out the rest on its own.

Iโ€™ll sleep on it and if I still like it Iโ€™ll propose it to the nitter dev

vincent, to random

I'm testing stuff regarding authorized_fetch, but I would need a mastodon server that has it turned on. Know any?

vincent, to random

On the plus side, large servers banning bird.makeup gives people an incentive to move to smaller servers, and thus keeping the fediverse decentralized.

I just wrote a post about what's new with bird.makeup: https://www.patreon.com/posts/84776665

Threads looks clean! I hope they will turn on federation soon
