? Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh which is very intriguing so far. Lots and lots of undercurrents, clueless main character.

Been reading Forever My Girl by Heidi McLauchlin but giving up and deleting it because the MMC can't have a single thought about a woman that isn't misogynistic as hell. They all want him, they're all trying too hard, they all make him sick. He makes me sick.

? I was up all night 🥱 finishing You Should Be So Lucky. Amazingly, it's somehow not a letdown after the gorgeousness of We Could Be So Good.

The themes are around living an authentic life in a highly closeted time, and it's complex and believable. There are tropes too but not obnoxiously or pointlessly. And really well drawn, relatable characters. And pretty swoony romance too. 😂

? Wow, the bleak moment in The Breakup Lists was even worse than I expected, though actually worked really well with the story arc. I found it overall a good read, though too repetitious and with a bit of a deus ex machina ending; I would've like to see the main character really pursue what he wanted.

Has what seems like very good representation, is very , and very geeky about high school theater. And a sweet romance.

? I haven't been posting about books much, been kind of in a meh mood. Still slowly reading Demon Copperhead, which is amazing but a LOT. Listened to Carrie Soto is Back, which was a bit of a hard sell because of the unlikable narrator but very enjoyable in the end. And just finished The Prisoner's Throne which I enjoyed but kind of forgot about as soon as I'd finished it.

Just finished The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson and am tempted to start a new category for my records: Nonfiction.Memoir.Bitching. If you'd love 400 pages of an old man yelling at clouds, to say nothing of being casually racist, homophobic and transphobic, this is the book for you. Not sure I'll ever be able to enjoy his work again. 😞

Started Clockwork Boys by T. Kingfisher and how nice to be immediately caught up in a book again. Her voice is always so effective.

I finally finished a book, thank Maude! After almost DNF'ing Wildfire because it seemed too similar to Icebreaker, I gave it another shot and wound up liking it considerably more than the first book. The characters are sweet and relatable, and the summer camp setting is cozy. Even the inevitable references to the romance genre were less annoying here, because the heroine actually learned something from her reading. 😂

This looks like an interesting book, but can you call yourself a Titanic survivor if you were never actually on the boat?

Friends, ? I finished The Other Side of Disappearing and think it'll be one of my top romances of the year. I loved the plotting, the richness of the themes and the really satisfying way things came together in the end.

Also read The Brunellesci Baby because what's a vacation without a Harlequin Presents? It's a pretty good one, tropey but with some individuality.

Friends, #WhatchaReading ? I read Mrs. Milner Gets a Kitchen by Jane Hadley. Ping @SuperWendy -- it's a 1950s historical set in a "from the old country" American neighborhood!

A divorced mother dealing with a lot of social pressure & stigma falls for the sweet and sexy contractor installing her gloriously 1950s kitchen.

I enjoyed it very much. Available for free by subscribing to Hadley's newsletter: https://janehadleywrites.com/

? I've been catching up on series I previously DNFd. Read Duke of Desire by Hoyt -- still way too emo and icky for me, I should've let it lay. Reading Cross Breed by Leigh -- ehh, she sucked me in.

Also started Expiration Dates by Serle but I'm finding the structure frustrating. I want to know what happens now, not what happened every other time! I suppose it will make sense as a novel, so maybe I should save it for another time.

Finished my 2nd book, Stars in Their Eyes by Jessica Walton, illustrated by Aska.

A charming graphic novel, queer, and super geeky. Maisie, (14, disabled, bi, writes fanfic) meets Ollie (15, nonbinary, draws fanart) at her first SF con and they have a wonderful day-long romance.

I really enjoyed the vicarious con experience, Maisie's relationship with her mum, and the sweetness of that instant connection. Hope we get a happy sequel someday.

hub: "I found this debate between Barbara Cartland and another romance author... Jackie Collins."

me: "Jackie Collins didn't write romance!"

hub: "What did she write?"

me: ".... trash."

😳🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

How would you describe Jackie Collin's books in a non-judgemental way? Are they in fact romance? 🤯

? I finished A Love Song for Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams, which reminded me a bit of One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston -- both use a fantastic scenario to engage with some lesser known history.

This was often sweet and funny, and the tributes to 1920s Harlem and Black musicians are lovely, but the tone mixture of goofy romcom and high stakes fated love didn't gel for me.

? I seem to be in a slump. Started The Last List of Mabel Beaumont but it quickly turned into one of my worst personal nightmares. In Scrap Metal by Harper Fox but it's a bit too dark. Read The Dress of the Season (free on Amazon) but it was just okay. Tried the graphic novel of Every Day and it was so dull. Bleh.

? Mentioning Erin Satie got me to check and see if she had anything new out, and I found a suspenseful fantasy novella about an imprisoned rebel leader/witch being rescued by friends (or a lover?) she no longer remembers. It's not very well rated, which I hope doesn't mean it has a sad ending or something. :-( Possibly just that it's not her usual genre.

? I just finished The Oak and the Ash by Annick Trent. I thought the first in the series was good but had plotting issues; no complaints about this one! Realistic portrayal of the lives of 1800s queer working people, with a sweet, slow burn romance. (Hard to have anything else for them!) For a comp I'd give Erin Satie, because of the focus on period technologies and intellectual interests.

OMG, the mmc of Role Playing by Cathy Yarley uses a fleshlight. That's breaking such a verboten romance rule I hadn't even realized it was a rule.

(He is demi-sexual and not sex-averse and it is such good rep!)

? I've been having trouble concentrating, so broke out my emergency Cate C. Wells, The Stone Wolf's Rejected Mate, and it's doing the trick.

I like how her romances are kind of old skool -- the drama and angst can be really cathartic -- but without the annoying tropes and outdated writing styles of many older romances. Old skool for the modern reader. 😂
