10th Anniversary of seems like a good time to ask this.

Why do we not have more compilations?

I encourage artists and labels to put together compilations of their CC-licensed work for this year. Doesn't matter how old it is, only how good it is.

I've done four or five compilations each year of various Netlabels. More would help us spread the gospel.

Also, to pick up a long-forgotten thread from our founder Manuel Silva:

CC music needs press. It's unlikely to come from well-funded corporate sources. But that shouldn't stop us. In fact it should make us redouble our efforts.

The Netlabel Day blog will be part of this. But it's not enough. Other outlets, other voices will be necessary.

update: I've archived 2023 and set the new placeholder page for https://www.netlabelday.org

Crikey, this is the 10 year anniversary of Netlabel Day. So much has changed. But free music, good music matters now more than ever.

Always remember that no matter how sucky life gets, gathering together in a theatrical space to experience the creativity of other humans is one of the most powerful things on earth.

NETLABEL DAY RADIO has a 24 hour show that lasts 51 hours! This year I'm encouraging DJs and musicians to take a slot lasting anywhere between 15 and 120 minutes for a LIVE broadcast. Like Twitch, but audio only and without the suck! I figure you're all better at this than Grimes.

Details? Hit me up here or via email.

Most of you get one more sleep before . But it's 23:30, July 13th in Kiribati and Tonga Line Island Time. So I get to jump on the microphone.

55 Netlabels
85 New releases
50 hours of live radio and trash talk

https://www.netlabelday.org will have the tentatively complete list of new releases. I'll have to add to them as the stragglers get me their info.

Be there.

@wjmaggos Ah, well there's Tumblr for you.

Fortunately I keep my feathers numbered for just such an emergency.

So many folks on Fediverse talk about freedom and free software and free expression but seem oblivious to the freedoms of others, especially if they happen not to like them ideologically.

Where do yโ€™all go for CC licensed music?

I need something short that allows commercial use.

:boost_ok:

wiloma,
@wiloma@mastodon.social avatar

@wjmaggos @maddiefuzz Depends what you need, of course. Internet Archive has lots of stuff but is hard to search. Try:

https://archive.org/search?query=mediatype%3Aaudio+licenseurl%3A

Free Music Archive has lots of stuff, too. It's a little easier to search and you can search by license. Try this search for commercial use allowed instrumentals:

https://freemusicarchive.org/search?adv=1&quicksearch=instrumental&&&music-filter-CC-attribution-only=true&music-filter-CC-attribution-sharealike=true&music-filter-CC-attribution-noderivatives=true

wiloma,
@wiloma@mastodon.social avatar

@wjmaggos @maddiefuzz
The other obvious choices are Soundcloud (you can search by license there, too, but downloading is sometimes arcane) and Bandcamp, which is quite difficult to search properly, since google broke it.

is July 14th.

All free-licensed music. All humans. All around the world.

Pretty sure the phrase "once in a lifetimr" was never intended to be "once a week in my lifetime".

I'm working hard on , folks. Get involved!

If you're an artist who's willing to release some music with a Creative Commons license on July 14th 2023 -- holla!

If you're a listener, start freeing up some space on your phone or hard drive to add a bunch of DAF music to your life!

@craigmaloney Dude, youโ€™re a goddamn legend and youโ€™ve already done far more in life than these yahoos who get to coast by, oblivious to the fact life can be really fucking hard. Cut yourself some slack. Itโ€™s not gonna be easy but you will get through this. And remember that you RULE. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿฝ

I was going to say that the B-52s were the only good thing to come from Georgia, but then I realized the Ellijay Makerspace was also in Georgia so there are two great things to come from Georgia.

@craigmaloney And of course, Lester Maddox.
