10th Anniversary of #NetlabelDay seems like a good time to ask this.
Why do we not have more compilations?
I encourage artists and labels to put together compilations of their CC-licensed work for this year. Doesn't matter how old it is, only how good it is.
I've done four or five compilations each year of various Netlabels. More would help us spread the gospel.
Crikey, this is the 10 year anniversary of Netlabel Day. So much has changed. But free music, good music matters now more than ever.
Always remember that no matter how sucky life gets, gathering together in a theatrical space to experience the creativity of other humans is one of the most powerful things on earth.
i think this is a good question because it reveals that it's really hard to talk about community in a substantial quality sense of the word. beyond "i want to allow people to share my work" there is nothing else that would bind the community together. no platform, no intercommunication, no events. maybe #NetLabelDay but that's also questionable if it can count as 'encompasing' the community.
there are at least two amazing projects in the direction you mention: @mirlo and #JamCoop ( @chrislowis )
personally I think both FMA and Jamendo are kinda enshitified. creativecommons.org and netlabel section at archive.org are too big and wide in their scope. funkwhale comes from 'my own jukebox online, fedeated' background (but moves in right directions).
All music should be #ccmusic (or #libremusic?). everything is a remix and in the age of the net and rising decentralization, we should focus on human recommendations and sharing and direct support vs corporate algorithms and middleman profits.
but I don't understand music labels today. thus #netlabelday is confusing to me. I see labels evolving into online radio stations, with DJs who love that genre of music, set of artists or local scene. and #funkwhale should be a decentralized #Bandcamp.
Dear friends and #music lovers; my new EP "Biike" is released today.
A wintry trip to the north and the tradition of lighting big bonfires to say goodbye to winter inspired these 7 tracks, mainly recorded on the North Sea island of Föhr, which already have a very special place in my heart.
Every #download of free releases saves a piece of #culture that is safer on your hard drive than with a for-profit company. Plus, by listening to your local archive, you save a lot of energy that a streaming service consumes.
Most of you get one more sleep before #NetlabelDay. But it's 23:30, July 13th in Kiribati and Tonga Line Island Time. So I get to jump on the microphone.
