I have written up our heat pump planning permission journey here https://www.bazmac.me/blog/my-heat-pump-journey-with-octopus-energy-part-2-planning-permission

Installation date is the 22nd July.

@bazcurtis @EarthOrgUK Interesting, as a country we really need to work on more sensible planning processes for Heatpumps, or work out a way of making them quieter.

wishy,
@wishy@tooter.wishy.co.uk avatar

@bazcurtis @EarthOrgUK I'm about 150m from the m25, but would likely face the same planning issues. The air on guy just said yolo nobody will even know they're there, but the grant means by the book...

wishy,
@wishy@tooter.wishy.co.uk avatar

@bazcurtis @EarthOrgUK also it's an insanity really isn't it? Neighbour didn't get planning permission for a noisy zoom zoom motorbike which he takes to work in the morning...

@Edent @bazcurtis I will say, our boiling water tap has been wonderful for load shifting (saving sessions, cooking, end of day in winter when I'm almost always low on battery) vs a standard kettle

How are people mostly communicating at ?

So far I'm in a couple of WhatsApp groups, a Signal group, following the hashtag on Mastodon, and attempting to get Matrix on my phone.

What's your preferred way of chatting with your fellow campers?

wishy,
@wishy@tooter.wishy.co.uk avatar

@Edent You're supposed to communicate with people? I didn't sign up for that!

SIP2SIM ordering ready with physical SIMs and eSIMs now.

https://order.aa.net.uk/simorder.cgi?sim=ONSIM

wishy,
@wishy@tooter.wishy.co.uk avatar

@revk how does SMS work with this setup?
Can SMS messages to my mobile number be sent to the handset?
And can I continue to send SMS "as normal" from the handset?

Is any number "burnt" on to a physical SIM, or can I order it using my A&A VOIP "local" number and port the mobile number later at my leisure?

wishy,
@wishy@tooter.wishy.co.uk avatar

@revk cool. I'd be looking to get the Sim then port my mobile number.
Think I might be wise to wait for mobile data to be sorted first.
Btw, what happens when the data allowance runs out?

I am thinking of investing in the latest project. It is going to be a wind farm. This is project 4. It was meant to be a solar farm which I was not interested in. Now it a wind farm this will be more value in the winter.

@bazcurtis I feel that, while the idea seems nice,
A) a lot of the funding seems to go into advertising, social media managers, admin and soforth
B) for me, it's not particularly tax efficient. If I could buy shares in ripple in an s&s ISA wrapper, for example, I would be better off
C) it's not a particularly flexible investment
D) it probably involves more admin than I have an appetite for

I am so looking forward to this release. I thought the new Sections for Dashboards was great, but the new organisation features look fantastic. I want to get my Automations organised.

Can anybody think of a way of using multiple Ikea Symfonisk (I think Ikea did these in collab with Sonos) wifi speakers as a kind of PA system to stream a live, or nearly live, announcement?

I’m thinking one in the corner of each room in a building. And then maybe you dial a SIP extension and it plays your live audio to all Symfonisk speakers in parallel and in realtime.

“Cleanup in aisle nine”

That sort of thing… any ideas?

wishy,
@wishy@tooter.wishy.co.uk avatar

@bloor yes, you can do it through home assistant. I've got a button on my alarm clock (pi tied to home assistant) for 'what's the time', for example. Some recent changes made that easier to do

FFS, now want to charge me for baking a component (and to see data sheet). It's an LED, one I have used on hundreds of boards, and indeed one board used 500 of them. They work well. This design uses only one. And all orders to date have not needed baking. The data sheet seems to suggest baking if not properly stored - so they want me to pay for them not storing properly?! This is really getting silly now.

@bazcurtis @homeassistant @homeassistant @homeassistant @homeassistant it was on the release notes. The met office datapoint python library hasn't been touched in years and uses deprecated features.
Those are fully disabled in python 3.12 so they've make a breaking change to disable it until the library is updated.
Links to git issues are in the release notes, not sure if anybody is working on it though

I need to do some research on the Octopus Gas Tracker tariff. It seems to be half the price of the standard gas tariff. Anyone else on it?

I have suddenly realised I should be paying by variable direct debit. You get all the benefits of paying by direct debit without having a fixed amount. I have left my direct debit fixed to my pre solar panel and battery level. I have claimed £1900 in credit this year.

wishy,
@wishy@tooter.wishy.co.uk avatar

@bazcurtis Move to tracker in December, pretty happy with it. Yes, basically half the price.
Only downside is I feel guilty for using 4p gas rather than 30p electric with a COP of approx 3.5 on the AC units

wishy,
@wishy@tooter.wishy.co.uk avatar

@bazcurtis Yeah, that's the issue isn't it. And actually you'd only need that battery for 2-3 months of the year, so it wouldn't actually end up as economically viable.

    The battery only charged to 80% last night. I assume this was due to the cold. It was -5c when I got up and it was like that all night. I managed to get it to 90% with an extra half hour slot.

    wishy,
    @wishy@tooter.wishy.co.uk avatar

    @bazcurtis Seems the BMSs on the different brands de-rate the charge at different temperatures. GivEnergy seem to be 5c (Haven't managed to get that low, it's in the loft and produces heat when naturally cycling), but Growatt is 15c (My colleague has covered his with numerous blankets and insulated his garage in an attempt to keep from de-rating. Flux only has a 3hr off peak..)

    wishy,
    @wishy@tooter.wishy.co.uk avatar

    @mario @bazcurtis slower charging - 2.16kw rather than 3kw

    @bazcurtis Requirement published. 17:30-18:30. £2.25/kWh rate again for Octoplus

    wishy,
    @wishy@tooter.wishy.co.uk avatar

    @ChrisWarwick @bazcurtis Anticipatory notices and requirements appear on the NG ESO service. Those are basically the notifications to Octopus et al that they should bid for DFS.
    https://www.nationalgrideso.com/data-portal/demand-flexibility-service/dfs_industry_notification

    I've setup HA to use their API and check every half hour for notices, so I get advanced warning and the opportunity to set the battery reserve early.

    I can share the config if you're interested

    @revk@toot.me.uk avatar

    I am not sure this works as a metric, or a graphic, . Not in my case. My average usage is carefully set to be at most zero as it is a peak period. My saver session usage is many kW below that… I managed to find a day that I apparently had 0.01kWh usage in the slot, meaning an average way lower, so I have cut down by easily 100000000% on that, I expect. Actually, I have the data, I could work it out. I wonder if they will get a divide by zero error at some point?
