I appreciate how seamless publish makes sharing a vault on the web, but I really wish it gave better control over what appears in the site header and navbar. It currently has a "hide from navigation" feature, but having to do that for nearly a thousand files is painful. It also lets you put in a Google Analytics tag, but GA isn't the only SEO game in town. Why not just let people add code to the head for whatever analytics, verification, or whatever they need?

Anyone interested in a $250 stipend for peer reviewing an OER textbook, "Intro to Communication and Media Studies"? It's adapted from several sources and has some original contributions by both me and my students. Due to a federal grant requirement, this is only open to those living in the U.S. I need three reviewers! Happy to answer any questions.

wjd,

@jjsylvia @academicchatter @academicsunite what's the time commitment? Is there a template or rubric for review or is it open? do they need to have a communications and media background? I don't (linguistics), but years of experience working with English as a second/subsequent language and could provide some feedback on accessibility for that demographic.

wjd,

@jaap @edutooters @academicchatter is this specific to universities or postsecondary education in general (including community colleges, technical colleges, etc)?

In discussions of WVU eliminating its languages department, there's been a lot of talk about the part where they talk about replacing it with an "online language app or online partnership" https://www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty-issues/tenure/2023/08/11/wvu-proposes-cutting-7-flagship-campus-faculty-all-languages

But I want to raise another point.

Language classes aren't just about learning languages. For many U.S. students, they're where the students first engage with and learn about different customs and cultures.

wjd,

@design_law It's an awful situation but they're making it even more awful by offering nothing to complete with online learning methods. Universities cry that they need to be more competitive with alternative education models, and then try turn around and pull moves like this. Interpersonal communication and community of scholars is one of the only benefits a university has over other models. They're only making it worse if they do this, which is a shame on their administration.

wjd,

@design_law I'd guess this is the real reason. I wonder if there are "underperforming" departments that don't run counter to a conservative agenda that are gonna be just fine.

Done prepping for the fall semester? Double check that you're removing barriers for your students rather than creating them:

wjd,

@arinbasu1 @academicchatter @theADHDAcademic Absolutely. Also especially students whose first language is not English, and whose culture does not include our academic norms.

Noticed a issue when rendering a citation for a quarto article. I write my name with initials in the author yml:

author: "Matthew J. C. Crump"

The bibtex citation generated at the bottom of the article merges the initials onto the last name.

author = {J.C.Crump, Matthew}

It should be

author = {Crump, Matthew J. C.}

Anyone come across this and know of a solution?

wjd,

@MattCrumpLab You can break down the author and name fields to get more specific. Try:

author:
- name:
 given: Matthew J. C.
 family: Crump

wjd,

@chriscweis @3goodthings It was! Their pork belly ramen is fantastic. It rivals anything I've had in major cities.
