If you live in the UK and have ADHD, please take a look at Dr Dyi Dieuwertje Huijg's survey, "ADHD Women: Resisting a Neuronormative World."

Dyi has ADHD herself, and she's one of the few folks I've encountered researching ADHD with ADHD.

Please share with those who may be interested!

Timely reminder that disabilities are fluid. A person may be symptomatic one day and fine the next. A student may not need accommodations during the semester, but the end of the term rush may make accommodations very necessary. This does NOT mean the student is faking it or taking advantage of you.

I want to do another PhD focusing on ADHD students and what formal accommodations, teaching methods, and course structures help ADHDers learn.

Who wants me?

Yes, I have what are considered "diverse" interests for academia. My web page, scholarly profiles, and CV all reflect this. I do not fit nicely into a single field. I create bridges. I work across and with different disciplines. When is that going to stop hurting me?

Any other neurodivergent folks get every question wrong in the university's cyber security training or is that just me? I can almost always think of an exception to an answer and am currently failing mine.

Yes, there is STILL an ADHD drug shortage.

If you live in the US and have been affected please, please, please, fill out a comment. If you've been unable to fill your prescriptions, let them know how this has affected you. Let them know that this is an important issue. The comment period ends in 33 days.

I love the Job Accommodation Network (JAN), but I am a bit surprised that agendas for meetings or clear objectives for meetings isn't an accommodation (for any disability but esp. executive functioning and memory)?

Yes, it's best practice, I know. I need something that proves to HR why I need this. Why meetings with no structure and 100% flexibility impair my memory, ability to organize my mind, plan, & etc

When I lose a thought to ADHD, where does it go? Are certain types of thoughts lost forever? Does my brain have a set threshold where it can recover say 25% of lost thoughts? Does my brain do any type of sorting in terms of the significance of a thought before it loses some thoughts but not others? If my brain sorts before losing thoughts, how effective is this sorting?

Things I wonder about my own brain...

"...all universities in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged, with 4,327 students and 94 academics - including high-ranking administrators - killed and 7,819 injured. ...281 state-run and 65 UNRWA-run primary and secondary schools have been completely or partially destroyed, and 231 teachers and administrators killed. How do we propose to proceed, as humans involved in academic life, if we let this go without comment?"

Educators can be more inclusive by saying no to inconsistent deadlines, poorly organized reminders and directions, bans on laptops or doodling in class, convoluted multi-part questions, and other forms of academic ableism. It may not seem like it, but these are all barriers affecting your ADHD students, your traumatic brain injury students, and other brain-based disabilities.

folks make a million connections where a non-ADHD person makes 4. Those connections may be good or bad or genius or ordinary. The connections may be many things.

The volume is overwhelming & sometimes we process them out loud. So yes, it may feel like we're telling you everything. Sorry?

On the plus side, we're communicating and I think that's a good thing. At least you know what we're thinking and don't have to guess...

Post inspired by convo with @ADHDandPhD and Dyi D. Huijg.

@BeAware Ugh, I'm so sorry. I would rather have friends communicate more so I know what they're thinking rather than friends who never express their ideas.

Dearest disabled undergraduate and graduate students,

If you experienced based on your last semester, I don't want to stress you but I do want to point out or remind you that you have the option of reporting to the US Office of Civil Rights. The caveat is you have to report within 90 days of the incident. There are MANY factors to consider when deciding to report. I just want to remind folks of the deadline since it's a busy time. @BeamsAndBows Yes, it's not an easy process at all, which is why I recommend students think about the type of support they have, the amount of energy they have, and whether or not it is worth it.

Sadly, for many it won't be. In those cases, I recommend looking at @DisabledInSTEM 's Accessibility Review Form: https://mastodon.online/@theADHDAcademic/110719259777514578

My favorite part of my ADHD brain is how I am able to come up with nine million exciting ideas only to fail completely at organizing those ideas, tracking my progress within ideas, and subsequently get completely overwhelmed and exhausted.

10/10 Highly recommend. Not.

Before expressing your disdain for ADHD students who "need to learn to manage their conditions" and learn that deadlines exist, check yourself. How many of the deadlines you encounter are truly hard deadlines?

Also, unless you're helping them "learn to manage their condition," shut up.

@theADHDAcademic@mastodon.online avatar

Students, assuming you are registered with the disability office, there is no wrong time to use your accommodations. Even if you haven't used them previously in the semester, if you need them now, use them. It's your right. Don't suffer thinking it's too late. It's not.

Many students registered with the office never use their accommodations, and this kills me. They are not cheating, they are not taking the easy way out, and you have every right to use them!

If you share help lines with your students, please be careful and disclose whether or not the help line participates in non-consensual rescue.

Do they call the police or emergency services (often police) without notifying the caller? This can be VERY dangerous for Black students, trans students, etc. Many are unaware of what non-consensual rescue is, so assume students don't know.

Ahem, for ADHD students dreading exam time...I'm betting you haven't tried all of this studying advice, but prove me wrong. I worked pretty hard on this blog post.

Yes, it's long: 1. Use the subheadings to navigate to the section you need. 2. Use the images.
