Today is going to be a very interesting discussion at my synagogue's book club. Also Snow in August is a deeply disappointing book that clearly shows why "own voices" books are necessary.
I once went on a date with a guy who ran a small time sci fi con. This was after I started volunteering for WisCon.
Once I told him I was a writer, he gave me much unsolicited writing advice (he was not a published author). When I told him the authors I was reading at the time (and who write books in my wheelhouse) he was super dismissive.
I think it was the year after I moved that a con he was running had a huge race fail.
