i think i really do like metroidvanias. i want another one, another one good enough for me to speedrun.

just saw a video titled "the genre indies avoid" with a picture of crosscode. sounds interesting. so i watched. it claimed:

  • metroidvanias are easy to make (with footage of hollow knight)
  • the reason crosscode was hard to make is because it's a jrpg
  • jrpgs are often longer than 50 hours
  • their combat systems are especially hard to make
  • undertale is a jrpg

i hate youtube.

to elaborate on this:

  • metroidvanias are one of the hardest genres to make because of the nonlinearity. nonlinearity means there's more ways the player can play the game that all have to work well, major parts of the game could be done in different orders, etc. hollow knight is an especially bad example of "easy to make" because of its huge amount of content.

i tried to do a #HollowKnight speedrun, using the pro route except for using deepnest instead of queen's gardens. i was slower than my previous best with my own route (1:19:12 - 1:23-ish) and it was super tilting.

It started very well, I did the mosquito skip first try, shade skip first try, watcher knights first try... that I really wasn't expecting. I'd never fought the watcher knights without double jump and nail upgrade before so I was pretty scared of that.

I got turned around for a while around that time and lost several minutes:

  • killed a bunch of enemies unnecessarily because I was confused about geo and thought I wouldn't have enough
  • went the wrong way to lemm and couldn't unlock his door so I had to go back to watcher's spire
  • realized I forgot to wake sly when going for the shade skip, had to go back down there... and died to a violent husk, so I had to go back down again.

idea: a metroidvania with multiple protagonists. they've all got their own, intersecting adventures, and you pick one to make progress as and whenever you complete an objective, you find the other character(s) have also done something in the meantime, explored a new area or found a new ability. they can have dialogue with each other, which you can trigger from either side, and sometimes team up with them as AI-controlled.

i feel like the word metroidvania is getting cheapened, reduced to just meaning "action platformer"

it's so frustrating that so many post-dark souls metroidvanias have the dark souls bloodstain system. metroidvanias are the genre where this makes the least sense.

i want a place to find games based on detailed mechanics search. like, i'm interested in action rpgs, but if i search for that on places like steam, i get games that all have the worst traits of RPGs like grindable experience and shallow combat. i should be able to filter for the mechanics i want.

fundamentally all this means is having a database with relevant tags on every entry.

i could search for metroidvania and have the same problem: they've all got grindable experience, dark souls bloodstain system, long boss treks.

there must be ones out there that don't have these problems. that's what i want to find, but there's no way to search for it.

tried playing the original Metroid today, since i've been interested in metroidvanias lately.

i was really confused. when i picked up missiles it took me like 15 minutes of googling and experimentation to find out what i'd just picked up and how to use it.

i explored every path seemingly open, missiles didn't seem to open any new paths, couldn't find anywhere new to go.

heard someone suggest that they need 32GB of memory for VR games.

if your video game requires more than 16GB of memory, it shouldn't exist

started Cave Story today. it's decent so far, but idk why wikipedia called this a metroidvania. it's completely linear and you don't unlock new abilities that let you reach new areas.
