zagaberoo,

They did as a side product, but that’s not at all the same thing as dropping the concept entirely.

zagaberoo,

Whether they need it to federate or not, it’s still reasonable to not want an entity as large and powerful as Meta to consume this data. Fuck Meta because it’s Meta, which has a history of being particularly heinous with user data.

zagaberoo,

Of course, but that doesn’t mean people aren’t allowed to distain making that connection closer.

I don’t imagine Meta is bothering to scrape Lemmy instances anyway. The signs would be pretty obvious I’d imagine.

zagaberoo,

Perhaps your parents recognized the valuable skills you were developing!

I Tracked an NYC Subway Rider's Movements with an MTA ‘Feature’ (www.404media.co)

During all this monitoring, I wasn’t anywhere near the rider. I didn’t even need to see them with my own eyes. Instead, I was sitting inside an apartment, following their movements through a feature on a Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) website, which runs the New York City subway system.

zagaberoo,

Not to use the subway, to access a payment card’s complete ride history.

zagaberoo,

I always answer, and I still only occasionally get spam calls. I wonder whether I’m just very lucky or if wasting their time consistently gets you put on lists of a different kind.

zagaberoo,

Emperoratrix sounds really clunky to me, -atrix is the feminine counterpart to -ator. Imperator, dominator, navigator, etc. I’m particularly fond of the overextension that is ‘alligatrix’ myself.

zagaberoo,

Why not ‘Empress’, I wonder? Nothing actually wrong with any of the options, just rings strangely to my ears.

zagaberoo,

LFS doesn’t give you a usable system in practice though. A distribution is nothing without package management.

Gentoo gives you a thorough course in Linux fundamentals, and has lots of other benefits. Forget the mild gains of compiling for your specific CPU, it’s really all about the incredible flexibility of Portage.

zagaberoo,

LFS surely teaches more, but not by much.

Portage lets you see down into the proper guts of Linux deployment. It’s much more applicable knowledge than almost any other distro. Plus, the install and maintenance teach non-specific fundamentals as well.

LFS gives a bit more learning and an utterly impractical OS for real life.

Gentoo teaches slightly less, and gives you an extremely robust and flexible OS.

zagaberoo,

I can’t imagine why someone would want both init systems; that’s awesome.

zagaberoo,

I use my machine all the time when its updating no problem. You can always configure portage to leave a core or two idle anyway.

zagaberoo,

I use all cores for updating and still have no problems. Doesn’t even make videos stutter. I think you’ll find things much less heinous than they were on Xbox.

zagaberoo,

Like Tech Deck style? I never thought people could actually do tricks with them.

zagaberoo,

That’s awesome. I suppose if you can do a trick with legs, it should be doable with fingers!

zagaberoo,

Terraform is great automation, but it really shines over scripts in a few ways:

  • intrinsic documentation for your infrastructure
  • much less brittle to differences in the initial state
  • changing your setup later doesn’t require any new script logic, just a simple config change
  • much better support for collaborative editing
zagaberoo,

It’s more complicated to make money producing FOSS, capitalism or not. Lots of reasonable developers would still choose closed source even without capitalism.

zagaberoo,

Man, I was tempted to stay on reddit when RR got exempted. But, you know, “First they came for the proprietary clients. . .”

I am proud of QuantumBadger, though, for helming such an excellent no-nonsense app that even Spez couldn’t justify killing it.

Revealed: WHO aspartame safety panel linked to alleged Coca-Cola front group (www.theguardian.com)

It uncovered eight WHO panelists involved with assessing safe levels of aspartame consumption who are beverage industry consultants who currently or previously worked with the alleged Coke front group, International Life Sciences Institute (Ilsi)....

zagaberoo,

How do you mean?

I’ve heard of things like the sensation of sweetness being decoupled from satiation leading to a greater urge for sweetness in compensation, but at least personally that’s not happening to me lol.

zagaberoo,

Why not though? The health impact of moderate diet soda consumption seems to be pretty negligible.

zagaberoo,

That makes sense. I’m coming at this as someone who drinks diet coke because they like it rather than to avoid drinking sugar.

Amusingly it’s the fact that diet coke is relatively less sweet that makes me like it.

zagaberoo,

Just following in the footsteps of the Silk Road’s creator on Stack Overflow. The FBI mentioned the post specifically.

zagaberoo,

I see it more as pride in the community and administrators. Plenty of distros are complete passion projects and aren’t undeserving of pride.

zagaberoo,

Binary speed is really the least reason to use Gentoo.

There are a lot of thorny issues in package distribution that source builds completely sidestep.

Install-it-yourself plus source updates are a lot to ask, but if you can get the hang of it the benefits are pretty sweet.
