Not sure what it is, but lately FFS has gone from something I’m wasn’t sure I even wanted to pretty much the top of my list for gender affirming surgery.

zombierustpunk,
@zombierustpunk@hachyderm.io avatar

@bridget I was just thinking something like that earlier today. I used to be sure I wouldn’t want it, but now I definitely want to at least get an assessment.

Here's a new (for me) take wrt async APIs:

Public async APIs can't know how they'll be consumed. If I want to wrap a few different calls into my own Future, there's ergonomic pain to include async fn's.

Instead of marking themselves as async, these APIs should return their own Future object, for maximum flexibility.

zombierustpunk,
@zombierustpunk@hachyderm.io avatar

@khionu Hmm, I don’t have much experience with Rust async, but that’s exactly how async functions work in C# and JavaScript — they return a Task/Promise. And it’s great. Very composable. Did rust take a different approach?

zombierustpunk,
@zombierustpunk@hachyderm.io avatar

@khionu Thanks for the detailed explanation. I’ll have to take some time to wrap my head around all that.

i think i’ve been transitioning slower than most folks i follow.

but i think today might have been the first time i spent an entire day girlmoding, including a job interview and a trip to my beloved taco bell. if i take this job, i’ll be Bee there from the start. (not stealth, though — i know some folks there from pre-transition)

feels like i’ve turned a corner. and it feels so nice.

I recently bought Myst. It’s one of those pieces of software I always wondered about. When it was released in 1993, my family couldn’t afford a computer that could run it. When we did finally get a proper PC in 1996, it was old hat.

Well, technically I bought a 3D reimagining of it, I guess.

It was… fine? I don’t know. Maybe I’m spoiled by better games that it inspired, like the Room series on iPad. It wasn’t bad, but it just left me a little disappointed.

@Obdurodon i feel the same way about some classic movies or music. like, you listen to the Beatles now, and they just sound like everything else. but at the time, they were doing new things. it’s impossible to experience with the original context

i wouldn’t say the writing on Doctor Who this season has been particularly great, but the show finally got its sense of fun back. the show had gotten so dark and dour. i love the excited energy of the new cast.

i’d love to have a season of Doctor Who where the companion is just some person, and not the mysterious key to this season’s big mystery box.

i don’t understand the kind of “futurist” who thinks it’s good to put chips in our brains, but bad to change our genders. They seem like the same kind of bio-hacking to me.

my bluesky account has turned out like my twitter account was — 99% bitching about politics. i very intentionally don’t bring that energy into this space.

i miss pre-2016, when most of my social media experience was shitposting on tumblr.

my favorite place on the internet these days is subreddits for fast food chains. people spend their whole lives optimizing the art of ordering the perfect burrito for the minimal price. beautiful humans

it’s weird how i’ll get excited and write like 3 songs in one month and then not even pick up an instrument for the next 11 months. i guess i just have too many hobbies. now if i could just finish Planet Crafter already…

My transition is going amazingly well in so many ways but one: my voice. I’ve struggled with it for a long time.

Today I realized it’s not because it’s hard (though it is) Rather, I struggle because I won’t let myself do well.

My voice keeps me from being correctly gendered in public. And I think deep down I don’t feel I deserve to be. I’m not worthy of it.

So I don’t let myself have it.

Damn.

zombierustpunk,
@zombierustpunk@hachyderm.io avatar

@bumpus 🫂

yeah, i have a much harder time making myself use my voice than i do actually doing the voice. i don’t even understand why.

but you do deserve it, and i hope you let yourself have it.

heh i checked the gimp git history, looks like my patches were in 2004 and of course this was cvs days, so you had to get a committer to commit it for you

the tiff plugin also had big-endian bugs!

and i almost forgot, i ported the twain scanner plugin from windows to macos x :D

amazingly twain is still around? hah

zombierustpunk,
@zombierustpunk@hachyderm.io avatar

@brooke twain!

i appreciate twain. so much shitty scanner software out there. it was nice to have a standard.

Lord help me, I’m back on my bullshit. Applying for another job finally, and I’m getting all excited and writing up plans for how I’d approach the problem space. And I’m applying under my new name, too. I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I fear it’s already too late for that.

I’ve been playing Planet Crafter lately instead of coding. It’s really fun, but it doesn’t give me much to talk about. I’ve finished terraforming the planet and now I’m working on the endgame.

We just watched Mitchells vs the Machines, which if you haven't seen is very enjoyable, but near the end of the movie I made a comment about how the movie had a very similar feel to the Spiderverse films.

Spouse scoffed and said "they're nothing alike!"

I WAS FUCKING RIGHT! ITS THE SAME WRITERS AND PRODUCER

zombierustpunk,
