The problem with outsourcing your chat or forum to third parties is that you don't own them. That is correct

The problem with self hosting those things yourself is that 1. nobody will use them because why aren't you just using this 3rd party app that everyone is already using and 2. have fun doing your own spam control

Seems like a bit of a damned if you do damned if you don't situation if you ask me

Explicitly seeking recs

I'm wanting to polish my skills, but I want to make sure I don't miss critical areas. The main focus I want to make sure I'm good at atm is design and relevant eng.

I highly prefer thorough online articles, but books are also fine. I prefer avoiding YT videos because I do lots of back tracking to reinforce understanding.

Thanks in advance!

Hey all, I have a referral code for Pixel Dice - TL;DR really well designed Bluetooth/RGB dice. While the software story is still evolving, it's already pretty impressive what you can do. It's all OSS, too. I have a couple already, and can say they're 100% what they promised 3 years ago on their Kickstarter, which is an amazing success story.

They could use your support to keep going

Work that fails to get tracked is work that people can't use to support their contributions. Putting out fires often gets lost in the sea of all the other work, but is distinctly critical compared to planned P0s. We've chosen at to adopt "P-1", to highlight the priority of unplanned but essential work.

This is what revolution looks like. This is change, immediate and unavoidable. I'm proud of those in the Nix community standing up like this.

I encourage @nixos_org to take this very seriously. This is a make/break point for the Nix Community, and your choices will have immediate, drastic repercussions.

You will hurt people, it's unavoidable at this point, but are you going to hurt and fracture your community, or a small set of people who led you here to begin with?

The American tech scene would explode in a second Renaissance if the US got basic universal health care as a public right.

@Elucidating or 3/4 of engineers would quit for the farms :clown:

But seriously, there's no end to the reasons we need this.

@Elucidating I was more trying to invoke the whole "wisened engineer seeks digital-free solice" meme

Windows has descended into trash tier.

I love explaining complicated subjects in a quippy way that isn't necessarily wrong. For example:

Kubernetes is 20 while-true loops in a trench coat pretending to be a container orchestration platform.

What are your favorite quippy ways to explain a complicated topic? It could be anything! I'm just curious what y'all have :)

khionu,

@hazelweakly kubernetes is just BEAM reinvented at the infrastructure level

I'm still looking for contract work! Architecture for computer services and products of pretty much any kind, software and infrastructure. Rust and Elixir are strong suits, distributed systems as well. I'm available for short term and long term contracts.

No crypto.

what does it mean for DisplayPort to be "open-source"

what is the source of DisplayPort

khionu,
@khionu@hachyderm.io avatar

@whitequark @argv_minus_one I've been convinced that implementing USB3 is a nightmare for anyone who isn't ready to spend thousands on lab equipment and iterate a dozen times. USB4 is apparently impossibly inaccessible for individuals.

khionu,
@khionu@hachyderm.io avatar

@whitequark @argv_minus_one I mean the circuitry, paths, etc

khionu,
@khionu@hachyderm.io avatar

@whitequark @argv_minus_one maybe. I don't have direct experience, this is roughly what three people pushed very hard while I was asking about it in a Discord about embedded development. If I misunderstood them (though they definitely made it out to be very difficult) or if they were wrong, I would be quite happy for a project I'm in the early phases of. Having USB3 transfer speeds would be a big boon.

Still amazing to me that I did a couple gender-presentational things that alleviated some dysphoria in the past couple months and basically further confirmed that my gender is basically "androgynous dyke".

Technical words that sound worse to people outside of that particular field:

degenerate (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degeneracy#Science,_mathematics,_and_medicine)
regime (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regime_shift)

I'm trying to think of others. Please no outright slurs, we can let those die.

(Edit: folks on Discord mentioned:
"reaping zombie children" (Unix process management)
"performed an illegal operation" (computers in general)
"exploit" (compare resource usage vs. computer security)
)

khionu,
@khionu@hachyderm.io avatar

@recursive Maybe it was a little too obvious? But I'm surprised no one mentioned "master/slave", which is sadly still part of spec in some low-level contexts, eg SPI.

khionu,
@khionu@hachyderm.io avatar

@recursive I mean, yes, but arguably some of the other examples are (less so, but) also bad and should be moved away from.

khionu,

@hazelweakly This is why I type as though I would speak. So.... here I just made an elongated pause, and I add emphasis as I would speak the emphasis, and it sates my "I need to make sure I communicate my tone effectively" urge. But I'm also pretty practiced at it, for.... spicy reasons, lol
