I think reddit is more replaceable than Twitter. It seems the stickiness of Twitter has to do with the specific individuals on there. People don't want to leave not because they get news about famous people, but because the actual famous people are on there. And the famous people don't get the same status recognition on other platforms, so they want to stay their too. I can get my news from anywhere, and reddit was just the best tool to facilitate that. Lots of communities used Reddit, but you can build that community other places too, reddit was just a really suitable place to do so.
I feel really bad for you, you're spending all this time making this place while I'm blowing off work just to play here. Hope you get a chance to kick up your feet and enjoy the communities you've enabled here soon!
Prior to the protest reddit was in full support of the protest. Most polls on subs supported a shutdown. Now, seemingly every community cant understand why the protest was needed and they're calling it a mod power trip. There is a 3rd possibility. This is an unfounded conspiracy but reddit themselves could be manipulating...
I pretty much agree with this. If you look at the accounts of the people complaining, how many of them have posts hitting the frontpage? I'm not saying I have any data, I'm just speculating that most people who are power users, whether they use 3rd party apps or not, can recognize how shitty reddit went about this and won't complain about the protest.
I've been seeing a lot of angst and emotion on the Reddit migration, which results in either defeatism or blind optimism. In the end, it probably doesn't matter, but I wanted to do more fact-based research into the subject....
He's said that very few people use 3rd party apps, but at the same time, he says "And the opportunity cost of not having those users on our platform, on our advertising platform, is really significant," So are 3rd party apps very unpopular, or are they taking away a really significant number of users? He's essentially saying- nobody uses Apollo, but Reddit is dying without Apollo's users.
I've heard that if you tried to edit a comment in a community that had already gone private, that it could prevent you from editing it. Are you sure you were able to edit and delete the comments you're seeing? Normally if you delete your account without editing/deleting, the comment stays up and it just changes the username to deleted. I used Power Delete Suite on Sunday and don't see any of my comments have been restored, but most subreddits hadn't gone dark yet on the 11th.
That was exactly what I thought of as well. You're complaint is mods are unelected, but what about unelected afmins? How about put the CEO up for a vote and see what happens.
After years of using reddit, i finally deleted everything including my account there. Personally, i am not affected by the api prices, BUT, i couldn't live with me supporting people, who see their userbase, moderators and creators as nothing but noise. The point i'm making? Greetings Lemmy. I joined a few days ago and i'm here...
This move is like the ranchers deciding that veal will sell for a higher price, so now we're all being shackled so that we stay tender.
I actually think this is far more absurd. The situation is more like the ranchers deciding to charge rent to the cows living on the farm. We're not just the product being sold to advertisers, we're also content creators - building their audience to sell to advertisers. And now if I want to access reddit through a third party, they want to charge about $30/year, plus a 30% markup for the app store cut. You know it's odd, everyone is treating this as though the app developer is being charged this insane amount, but obviously they aren't doing anything with the data commercially, they are simply conveying the information to us. We're ultimately the ones being asked to pay the same as a Curiosity Steam subscription - a service that actually costs money to run and license documentaries, not a fucking text based forum where users create or link out to all the content- just to access a free website in a different way.
This is going to be a piece of advice for TOTK, not sure how to spoiler tag on this platform yet, so if you're not interested just skip on by. This is not really a spoiler in any sense though.
I went a huge portion of the game without upgrading my battery. I had 600 of the charge things before I figured it out, enough to triple my battery life. There's a construct you encounter on the tutorial island who tells you how to upgrade your battery, but it's way too soon for you to be able to afford it. There's just way too much vocabulary going around at the time so I totally missed it. There's another construct on a big rock behind the first little settlement you find on the ground, in front of Hyrule castle. Either of those places are easy to warp too. They charge 100 of the upside down triangle charges to give an extra battery notch. You can add one at a time; you don't have to wait to have 300 to add a whole new battery. The depths are the easiest place to get more of those charges. You will not max out the battery capacity for a very long time unless you make it your full time job.
I think I did it earlier than I was supposed to. In BOTW the attitude was kind of, get it whenever you get around to it. They seem to have kind of integrated getting more it into the story, so I assume you'll kind of start hearing about it when you progress the main story far enough.
Just a quick and dirty userscript to add some features I feel are super important. I'll probably look into creating some real PRs, but I figure the devs are probably in "put out fires" mode right now....
A commerial lease is generally very hard to get out of your obligation to pay, especially if you're not going out of business and still have assets. "Writing something off" is generally just counting it against your income - I'm not a tax expert but I believe businesses generally pay taxes only on their profit, so any expense like rent would count against their taxable income. That's one reason why companies like Amazon can pay so little taxes - they reinvest income into the business fast enough that they never turn a very high profit. They do shady shit too to avoid taxes but the single most important element is completely above board- that their costs are subtracted from their revenue before determining taxable income.
This is a weird thought but I'm just curious if anyone else feels this way. I'm 39 and grew up playing games all the way back to the original Atari and I just feel weird about the term "beat" when it comes to finishing games. I don't know why, but I just feel like it's weird to say nowadays. I'm talking specifically about story...
I will probably beat the new Zelda game in the next couple of weeks. I will probably not feel like I'm done playing it until I do a lot more detailed exploring and upgrading my equipment. I'll beat it when I roll credits but I won't be finished with it until grinding for progress becomes more annoying than fulfilling.
Mario 64 is a cool example. The first super Mario I kind of feel like if you beat Bowser, that's it, you've fully beaten the game even if you used warp pipes to get there faster. That was the challenge and you did it. With Mario 64, I totally agree that beating Bowser is beating the game. But you can just keep playing and collecting stars - there's like 50 available beyond the 70 needed to face Bowser. Mario Odyssey kind of takes it to an extreme with a ton of post credits content. You can beat the game but there's still a lot more to do - not just replaying it from the beginning.
Is it normal for Kbin to frequently have to verify if my connection is secure via Cloudflare, if I neglect the tab for more than a couple of minutes?
Using Brave with shields off on iPad.
Hello, quick question about the interconnection between instances in the fediverse. I now have my account here on kbin.social and I have also created an account on mastodon.social some while ago that I've reactivated now since the reddit blackout. I have read that kbin can access mastodon, so do I need a Mastodon account at all? Can I possibly log in to Mastodon through my kbin.social account and use the Mastodon interface when I feel like it?
Also another thing: would this question better fit into the threads section or is it fine here with the microblog?
@Rayspekt I kind of feel like at work, sometimes I'll throw out an IM to the team rather than sending an email to everyone - it's kind of the difference between a post and a microblog here. A "how does this work" type post seems like a microblog situation more than a post situation, though while this whole thing is new I can kind of imagine either place would make sense as more people could benefit from reading from the answer presently.
Hello everyone. (I made this post on kbin too but it seems like this is the official magazine)
I recently joined this site and started being excited posting my videos on different magazines. But then I just got randomly banned by MothraCultist because I was spamming low effort AI content. I have worked really hard on these videos for months, the content is AI generated, not the creation of it, and I have been posting them slowly on reddit in different subreddits, but I just joined here so I have to post on different ones all together. It is not like I went on a magazine and started spamming, it is all over the site.
If you want this site to grow don't let power hungry people like her just randomly ban people, that is how sites grow, with people excited to spread content. After the initial large posting on different magazines I was planning to just post once or twice a day and be active, but I can no longer do it because I have been banned for 1 year. I find this ridiculous.
If you guys think I am wrong let me know, I just wanted to grow different communities with my content because some of them like ChatGPT literally had 0 posts.
I’ve been lightly eyeing it for a few months now since Nintendo 64 and Gameboy Advance games are available through the expansion, but wanted to see if people here have the expansion and like it.
I do and I really like it. The N64 games are really dope! Both the Zelda games, Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie are all fantastic. And now Metroid Fusion on the GBA too.
