Edit: I've been schooled in the comments, this is no longer a thing, they've relented and allowed more control over the censor list. But hey, it's kinda funny still, so, feel free to keep reading if you like......
Since that issue seems to be resolved, just came here to say, I did experiment this issue on a smaller scale on reddit.
Lets just say a very common color and sometimes even word of endearment for your loved ones in my native language is a common english slur (and a very bad one at that). I would be telling my friends of the x colored dress I bought via chat and the message would be flagged down and would not send.
I had to be very careful cause I was afraid my account would get banned one day.
For a sub that’s supposed to promote Reddit alternatives, there sure is a lot of pessimism on there. I see so many people dismissing Lemmy and kbin already for being too inaccessible, the UI is clunky, it’s hard to pick up etc and saying these sites will never take off. But why? Of course a platform in its infancy will have...
When I joined reddit (migrating from Imgur, I know, I know) I didn't get how it worked either. Before that I migrated from another platform, and before that I migrated from another platform. Its been the same each and every time.
Once you just start using it and it becomes your new reality, the days of the previous platform feel distant.
I nuked my Reddit accounts today. Deleted all comments and posts, then the accounts themselves. The tool I used showed each comment as it was deleted, and it was bittersweet....
I spent so much time there on reddit spreading knowledge of the things I had experience with and was passionate about (mostly piercing care, plant care, and science related stuff, which Ill admit is a pretty random combination of things).
For now, I can't bring myself to delete it.
But I do look forward to spreading the things I learned to a brand new audience, so Im keeping my head high even if Im sad its come to this
Don't know, but so far it seems like most marketing algorythms don't know what on earth to do with me, cause I really be here on internet doing very specific things that don't necesarilly relate.
They throw in the most random stuff, sometimes its things from countries Im not from, other times they think Im male, others that Im female.
On a very funny instance I got a youtube add (won't elaborate on why addblock wasn't on) recruiting me to join the sugar daddy / sugar baby business(?????? (still don't know if they wanted me to be the sugar daddy or the sugar baby, cause sure as hell I aint got the money and I aint got the goods).
I'm a Reddit refugee and in all the years I was there I never made a single post. I'm very much enjoying the Fediverse, especially Lemmy, and thought I'd share my happy place with you all.
Hi there fellow refugee, don't mind me commenting random stuff to get accustomed to kbin's interface (transitions are hard, and technology-wise Im a bit of a grandma, nothing practice won't solve).
Oh dude that's awesome!
I work with MRI files all the time, I can't believe I never thought this was something you could do with them.
This whole time for educational activities we have been carrying around the real things preserved inside a glass like maniacs, instead of, you know, a pretty 3d model that does not get kids asking us deep or gory questions about death.
Here is to hoping your time will come!
If its any help, Ive noticed these require way more water than your average succulent. They like a big drink as soon as they start getting wrinkly and they do that quite often.
anybody want to share about their body mods? i'm speaking broadly, including any piercings or tattoos. current, planned, or retired, i'd love to hear about them!...
Currently on the last stages of healing my daith piercing (if anyone is stuggling with that one, I have some advice I learned the hard way haha).
Rocking the pink bangs I gave myself during quarantine and couldn't get myself to let go of.
Excited for future piercing and tattoo projects
Hope Im doing this right (reddit refugee, hello everybody). Best of luck with your healing!
Titanium took a while to arrive where I live so I got to see all of the friends that thought they couldn't get piercings suddenly being able to rock new piercings. Wish you all the best!
This happened a while ago and is potentially an ongoing issue, so I figured I could kick us off.
This is between me (31F) and my sister (36F).
I'm studying to become a gemologist. I've completed about 90% of the coursework and have a ton of new knowledge and even a decent amount of practical experience. I don't make myself out to be an expert, but I definitely know a lot more than the average person and maybe even some jewelers.
So my sister and I were talking on Zoom and I mentioned something cool I saw recently. She said "Oh! I have this ring and it's a star opal, what does that sound like to you?" Completely automatic, unfiltered, I replied with "Sketchy." She got a little annoyed and told me she would get it so she could show me (through Zoom.) Thing is, star opal isn't... real. Not in the same way that you see star sapphires. They don't have the crystal structure or formation conditions for it. So she shows me via zoom and I say "That's really pretty, but I really don't think that's opal since they don't form that way, maybe it's something else." She got defensive and said that her friend got it for her in Thailand (not confidence-inspiring tbh) and that it was just something I haven't seen before. I ended up telling her I'd look at it the next time I see her or something.
AITA for calling my sister's ring sketchy? WIBTA if she shows it to me again of her own volition and I tell her what it actually is (probably glass)?
@BabushkaCat NTA Im in a profession involving science, where there are a lot of dupes claiming to be science (think medicine vs. homeopathy, its something similar to that), so believe me, I get you. Lots of people like to ask me what I think of the service they are paying for... and then get mad when I tell them its a scam lol. And Im like, dude, I just saved you from wasting money for the years to come.
Some people just want to hear they are right, I dont think that should stop us from being honest (especially to loved ones!), especially when they are asking for an opinion in the first place.
I left Reddit after /u/spez continued to lie about the changes being made to the API. After finding kbin I wanted to read more AITA posts like I could on Reddit, but after finding none I created this magazine at https://kbin.social/m/amitheasshole so that I could encourage others to make such posts.
I could have waited for long-standing Reddit moderators to come here and make it but I skipped the line to do it myself. AITA for not waiting?
@sidekick AITA is one of the subs I scrolled through everyday and one of the subs Ive been missing the most. Thank you for this, hope more people make the switch over here.
@iPabloSB
That sat wrong with me too... and I don't even use 3rd party apps.
It was more the principle of the thing. One time we managed to unite a big chunk of internet content in a protest and I felt like the mods in AITA... made a joke out of it.
One single hard-coded uneditable slur words list... really?!

What’s with the cynicism towards Lemmy on r/RedditAlternatives and Reddit in general?

Almost 5K Pirates migrated to lemmy. We're now 4th in lemmy communities browser! (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
Incredible growth. just goes to show how little we needed to be in Reddit....
I just deleted 12 years of content. Feels weird

My first post (sh.itjust.works)

I know this has been done before, but here's a 1:1 scale 3D print of my actual brain. The hospital that did my MRI let me have the files. (i.imgur.com)
Oscularia Deltoides in bloom (feat bear paws)! I wait for them to bloom every year, these make me so happy
I admit Im using y'all as guinea pigs while I figure how to post in these platforms, hello everyone, its nice to meet you!
Do you name your plants?
All my plants living inside got a name. Am I the only one doing this?...
body mods!
